Will De Jong be on the plane tommorow? that is the question!
Yes I think so

Deal will not get done for a few weeks at least and we will need him to have a preseason

I reckon he will eventually sign but I think it will go to the wire on or near deadline day

Him going public isn't going to solve anything. The best thing they could do is hold tight for as long as possible, which will cause Barcelona problems due to them not being able to register their new recruits.
Yes, you are right and if De Jong has decided to move ( this here is the important bit I believe), Dursun damaging Barcelona's reputation significantly helps them in getting what they want faster while also firmly stating his position to everyone including any potential buyer. Barca have everything to lose here turning up the heat helps De Jong if he has decided to move.

After how Barca have treated him, I'll really think really low of De Jong if he takes a pay cut to stay. Have some self respect, come to United and sue the shit out of Barca for your deferred wages.
And ruin his legacy?

I don’t think we disagree.

My point is simply that a contract isn’t all the leverage they have left, it’s the leverage every player normally possesses and it’s plenty.

FDJ could just shrug his shoulders, refuse to move, and there is nothing Barca can do about it.

If Barca and United both want the move to happen, then they can figure out a way to ensure that FDJ makes more money over the next 4-5 years than if he stayed put. Otherwise why should he agree?

The difference here is the new contract he signed with the backloaded wages. Usually when a player is sold halfway through his contract he’s already made half the money if the contract is evenly spaced out. The problem here is Frenkie as legally worked for Barca for peanuts for years and now is pissed they are selling him. So normally players are ok with transfers if the club doesn’t want them as they’d rather just move where they’re wanted. But Frenkie is due contractually a frankly ludicrous amount of money that nobody will pay him - that’s his and his agent’s fault. They should have known there was a chance they’d essentially be forced to stay at Barca even if Barca don’t want him.

In the end all they can do is stick to the “I’m not leaving” line till it’s essentially Frenkie or Lewa, Rafinha, Kessie, etc so that Barca are forced to pay him to leave. That’s the only play they have and I bet they didn’t want or envision that happening when they signed the contract.

What legacy?
Agreed, but it seems he can't sue them, legally it looks like they have stitched him up. His agent looks to be a moron or at best naive in this situation. Maybe they gave him assurances that it was just legal and that of course they would not stick to his contract.

Played for Barcelona

Legacy doesn't mean that, it means his legacy as being a club legend or winning a title. FdJ has none of that tbh. He is considered a not needed, good player who doesn't fit with Xavi vision.

Its a done deal at this point, Barcelona will have to pay his covered wages.

I very much doubt United would go this far if the player wasnt willing to leave.

This may drag until the final day of the window, with possible outcome we may not want to hear

Smart business to try to sell him. The first contract they gave him was still idiotic and part of the reason why they’re in the mess they are - and make no bones they ARE in a mess.
There is nothing smart about how they're doing it. He can tell them at any point to go feck themselves and the only thing they will be able to accomplish is having a very expensive and unhappy player they can't even cash in. Every single mistake is coming from Barca side here, not from de Jong's.

1. What you described here is literally how contracts are supposed to work. This is exactly why those protections are in place, so if one side is doing something stupid the other side has protections against that.
2. Barcelona will absolutely have to pay him that if he sticks to his side of contract. Where does the idea that they won't even come from? Also, describing that they owe him a lot of money as "his and his agent's fault" is genuinely bizzarre.

They don't owe him any money it seems, you are missing the latest narrative. It seems FdJ signed a contract where most of his deferred wages are actually written into his contract as payments that will come later in his contract as part of his wage structure. He and his agent believe they are due that if he is sold, Barca view is that they owe him nothing legally, he took a deal with no protections for if he was sold. If this is the case then he and his agent were foolish to sign

going to be funny if we pull the plug on FdJ and see the meltdown when Wolves ask 75 million for Neves, and we end up with mcFred/Tielemans getting murdered week in week out

Obviously they have to if he sticks by it and refuses to leave. But they’ll use every dirty trick in the book to make him leave. They’ll leave him out of the pre season tour, blame him for being unable to sign other players in the media, call him greedy and a mercenary who won’t think of the club, and then eventually offer him some money to leave.

Whether they’re petty enough to put him in the reserves and refuse to play him remains to be seen, but it’s definitely gonna be used as a threat this summer to get him to leave.

Does Romano who quoted De Jongs agent work for Sport?
Yeah but surely you can see that he has to maintain the “I’m not leaving and have no interest to leave” line right? He has to force Barca to pay him in order to make it worth his while to leave or else he’s just taking a big pay cut to move to an inferior team without CL.

Yep because those are the only options

Most of the others are unknowns or young so are arguably worse, Sangare, etc, are all massive gambles, plus Neves/tielemans are the only ones we seem to be linked with by more trusted sources

I wonder how far would each side go to ensure they get what they want?

Would Barca go as far as to threaten to bench him or relegate him to their B team for rest of season to force him the move?

Would FDJ go as far as to stay at Barca regardless for remaining of his contract to order to receive the whole amount of salary payment, even though the club keep mistreating him?

Would we become totally desperate and go as far as to pay the full amount of outstanding payment to FDJ on behalf of Barca to convince him to sign the paper with us?

This will go down as the weirdest transfer in history, should it go through.

But I'm glad communication between ETH and the player is hidden from the media.

He can say no to any attempt to transfer him out of the club or to force him to sign a new contract and Barcelona can't do anything about it and they absolutely forced to work with him because of that. This is as strong of a protection for such a situation as any player can get.

If they put their 85 million player in reserves, they will never get anything close to that amount after that. They can't afford to put any pressure on him that would massively lower his resale value or they will just screw themselves much harder.

that would mean they would be waiting until the deadline to get their new players registered, which lets see if barca are petty and crazy enough to wait for over 17 million pounds.

That is fine but leave out the "doesnt want to play for Man Utd" vibes. Like wtf is that supposed to achieve?

I feel like that one is random spanish sources just making up their own thing, as the "reliable" ones never said that. They all run with the "doesn't want to leave Barca" line and that's it, big difference.

At this point I wouldn’t put anything last Barca. If they were rational actors they wouldn’t be in this shit to begin with.

I suspect this entire issue has arisen because of poor legal wording and technicalities in the contract. There should ideally be little room for ambiguity over how much and when FDJ will obtain those future payments.

If he was greedy or a mercenary he wouldn’t have foregone wages during the clubs tough times. No one is that considerate if they’re

They’ve run out of cards to use really and now they have to pay him the deferred wages. My guess is this transfer will be done by next week. The waiting game doesn’t really work in Barca’s favour cuz they need the transfer fee funds asap.
