How accurate are the reports of us setting a Friday deadline for this transfer?

Completely unaccurate.

These "deadline" reports are all crap.

First there was a 30th June deadline, now its Friday, then it will be 31st July. then deadline day.

I don't think it makes any odds really. The impasse is between Barcelona and De Jong. Barca can't keep him unless they pay him what he's owed and honour his promised future wages. I can't see them doing the latter as they won't be able to register other players. Agreeing a compromise on what they already owe him and selling him is the best option for both parties.

i hope so. I want to believe!

I fear that he will decide to stay knowing he will probably find a way in to the team. Then he can keep his cash

If Barcelona aren't paying him I don't see him staying there under any circumstances, even if they make him whole, they're hardly a destination for ambitious players right now.

Whether he comes to us I am far less convinced about.

Arnold and Murtough went over and sorted the deal in terms of an agreement with Barca. I’d also imagine that they have had plenty of discussions with Frenkie’s agent - especially as he was at Carrington last week. Im sure that they have an agreement in principal with Frenkie and his agent. However, they have to have a Mexican standoff with Barca over owed monies. That’s out of our control. At some point this impasse will get resolved and things will move on.

It must be a real kick in the teeth for FDJ though as Barca are bleating poverty yet trying to sign everyone and his dog!

This will drag on for a few more days yet.

I think this is what the Friday deadline is for, only think left to sort is the argument between FdJ and Barca, up to them now

Its literally a standoff now between de Jong and Barca. Murtough and Arnold went to Barca i imagine to sort the standoff with the fee and addons, not to convince de Jong as people are speculating. Their job is done as far as they're concerned.

The fact they've agreed the fee, they're very confident that he wants to come as they wouldn't go to all this effort for nothing in my opinion. Its all down to Barca and de Jong now

They've made a fool out of the kid. What's the total sum he's owed, $17 million!?

That's insane. It's hard to imagine that relationship with Barca being anything but irreparable. So I think he'll join us but it might not be until a messy court case after his contract runs out.

I seriously doubt we would have come all this way without assurances from FDJ. It's safe to assume this is just tactical from his camp to get the money he is owed.

Because of the Ten Hag connection, you'd have to believe, or hope, that FDJ & his agent were sounded out months ago, and if it had be a flat NO, then we wouldn't still be banging our heads against a brickwall.
FDJ's agent was even at Carrington recently because of Malacia, so we surely must be getting the go ahead from FDJ's team....Surely...!!

In the real world do you even comprehend how much flak he would get from the club and supporters if he took such a stance.

I do question if some of you work in real jobs or communicate with people sometimes.
Bale seemed to have done exactly that for a few years and got every good at golf

Rob Dawson putting it out there that United are absolutely convinced that Frenkie wants to come. Other bits he's said is thar Martinez is imminent and that Eriksen has had the (thorough) medical.

He wants to come.

He doesn't want to give up $15+ million

Not mutually exclusive.

Never underestimate human incompetence.
We know his wage about 2/3m last year and the one before, and will jump to 19m this season and about 28m after that. This isn’t an I.o.u - it has to be a legal document agreed by both parties, so that at the end of his contracted period he has received the amount of remuneration originally offered. I agree his agent should have seen a scenario like this where they push him out to avoid paying but I cannot see how else this would be structured. Surely if he transfers without coming to a settlement with Barca he loses his claim to that money by breaking the contract. And it’s legal for Barca to act in this way because he has been paid 2/3m for his services and agreed to lower his wage in the first place. They have screwed him good and proper.
Not at all. He has a contract with Barca, and they have to honour it, or pay him compensation. He can just refuse the pay cut and stay there on his agreed salary. Barca can't afford this, and other players will demand higher salaries, so they will be forced to transfer him out and pay the deferred wage payments. Only a broken fax machine can stop this transfer from happening!!!

I refuse to believe United big dogs flew out to Barcelona for this nonsense

So the consensus is what? De Jong is saying he's not leaving nor taking a pay cut so to force Barca to pay him him the deferred wages at which point he'll sign for us?

Can't say I really understand that train of thought tbh
It's to force Barca to pay his deferred wages knowing that by not doing so they will have no choice but to continue to pay his wages, which they clearly can't afford.
It's a game of poker with de Jong holding all the cards

I dont understand why its that hard to understand..
He isnt desperate to leave.. there is no way he leaves if he misses out on a huge amount which he (rightfully) believes is his and something Barca are trying to screw him out of.

If Barca want him off their books, they have to give him what they owe him.. if not, he knows him staying put will hurt Barca more.

If they do pay him off, he'll happily leave.. who would want to stay at a club thats trying to force you out the way Barca are doing..

There is nothing for us to do here.. wait .. its between barca and De jong.. or more accurately, just down to Barca, because De Jong isnt going to give in..

Either way, they did.

If they know FDJ wants to join, they also know that there is a deadlock between player and club yet still went to try force the deal through and you can argue that is fair enough but they've left empty handed after a 3rd meeting.

I think a lot of this is between de Jong and Barca, but the initial agreement will likely have been a factor too.

It's on Barca now to get this sorted quickly. They want him gone, it's no secret, so I imagine they'll tell him that now in a subtle fashion that he's not welcome anymore unless he takes an insane pay cut

Exactly. They either pay him what they owe him now and he moves on, getting him off the wage bill.

Or he stays, pays him what they owe him anyway, plus a shit tonne more next year when the salary goes up again.

Barca can play hard ball all they like but they have no strength here. They'll have to cave in eventually.

Or you know De Jong has been stringing Ten Hag along all this time?

We should push for it until the last minute of the window. Maybe its true that he would prefer to stay there, but this is irrelevant. He's a high paid professional and its a world cup year.

How do you know what was said? Because Romano and Romero say they've not agreed with de Jong yet? The big one for them is the issues with the fee. That's totally agreed now apparently.

It's now time for Barca and de Jong to sort their issues out and come to a conclusion. De Jong doesn't want another pay cut, Barca don't want to and frankly can't afford to pay them. He'll likely be told that if he genuinely love and cares for the club and wants what's best for them, hell take the transfer

Whatever it is, just two more days to the so called deadline and we’ll know if this deal happens. We’ll look like desperate muppets if this rumbles on after this week

If he wants to stay so badly why would he even pick up the phone?

Negotiating your exit doesn't sound like a very smart way of staying does it

He can't force anything, he is but a tiny, tiny cog in a far greater machine!

The best he can do is stay put and hope they find the money in the years ahead, at that point it could go to a court I'm sure if they broke the terms of the contract.

His current contract runs until 2026!

Yeah saying he doesn't want to leave Barca repeatedly definitely doesnt feck your theory up.
Ah yes taking everything at face value because some twitter guys say its the truth. You and I have absolutely no idea what's going on behind the scenes or what's being said behind closed doors.

The negativity in here is shocking but not entirely unexpected to be fair

The wage deferrals were done to ensure, that Barca was able to comply with the la liga salary limit. This wouldn't work, if these deferrals would have been handled just like a loan from the player to the club, because they would have still counted to the salary limit even if Barca would have failed to pay them. The players agreed to reduce the salary of the current year and in return Barcelona agreed to increase their salary for the rest of the duration of the contract (adjusted with 2-3% interest p.a.) in hopes, that it would be easier to comply with the la liga salary limit in the future. The problem for Frenkie seems to be now, that he already gave up money, but would only get the benefits if he continues to stay with Barca. Yet if he leaves, unless there are additional provisions in the deferral agreement (like with Umtiti), Barca doesn't owe him anything.

Barca has also some unpaid wages, but there is nothing controversial about this. These get paid regardless of the players staying or leaving.

Slight contradiction your saying they have to pay him if he leaves but if he leaves they don’t owe him anything because of the new deferred contract, at best he stays and takes a huge pay cut, my pint is why are we being dragged into this, even ETH will understand that their are transfer, then there are difficult transfers and then there are impossible transfers so let’s just move on and get Tielemans, a proper destructive CDM and C Eriksen. I mean we could probably get N Kante(15), Eriksen(F), Y Tielemans (30) and Dumfries (30) for the same value as FDJ and without the £65M they are getting Barca plans would go up in smoke .

He can force it. If he refuses the paycut and refuses to leave, Barca are fecked because of the salary cap. Unless you've some information I'm not aware of.
