I think it all amounts to squeezing FDJ to wave away the money or for his new employer to pick up the tab. A war of nerves.

That can only go on for so long for us. I'm glad to read that we are willing to walk away if it's not sorted soon. Given 4 weeks until season starts and the time ETH will want with any new players, I suspect this is the last week in this saga, then we move on.

As frustrating as this De Jong saga is it would set a terrible precedent for future deals if we rolled over and compensated for Barca's mismanagement

Im sure ETH is clued in about De Jong's intentions, Barca are motivated sellers. Its not in Barca's interests it would seem to sort this asap. I can see it bring resolved quickly when they need some money freed up for their own transfers like Lewa. It will depend on how they will work to sort deferred wage situation and this could have a domino effect on the wages owed to other players.

I thought there was bullshit about United but the Barca stories are unreal. Feels like they are giving it the big one with all the stories trying to give the impression they are still a major financial power.

Just fed up with this saga now. He's coming, He's not coming. He want's to come, He doesn't want to come.
It's just taking for ages and will go on until he is paid what he is owed from Barca, which could take forever.
Then Ajax and what they want for Martinez and Antony 125/130 million. We need to get rid of some players fast with only 4 weeks left to start of Premiership. No Ronaldo means we need a striker, also.

You said city chased him for a year. No they didn’t. You can beat around the bush all you like.

City chased Kane all summer last year. Right till the end of the transfer window. There was no chance City had any interest in negotiations for Haaland at that point. Once the window was closed, they dropped interest in Kane and turned attention to Haaland. Didn’t chase him for long at all. This deal was done months ago.
Okay cool I was wrong about that and exaggerated the year.

So they chased him from the end of the summer until a good few months ago meaning that it was say around 6 months or so?

The initial post I quoted was crying about us chasing a player for 2 months so it's still a good example for the point I am trying to illustrate.

Its a fan-owned club so Laporte is swimming in a political mess. So lots of oven-ready throwaway statements to make himself look good and make the fans feel even better.

Of course - but not embarassing 2 months of licking Barca and also knowing that the player never once said he wants to come here.

This is not acceptable from our club.

Have you seen any other serious club going through this?
Did City/Liverpool/Spurs etc take two months to get their players?!
Ridiculous.
Licking Barca? We agreed a price at 65m when they had ‘demanded’ 100m to start with. That’s just good business. I know you do the gossip page around here but I think you need to stop taking it so seriously and can the faux outrage.

Also if 2 months for FDJ, the Sancho saga must’ve nearly killed you

100%

The nonsense statements but also decisions that are good for the club for the next 2/3 years and the next President/regime can pick up the pieces

If there is a club that needs to be clearing out waste and getting back to basics, becoming financially stable its Barca. They needed to be thinking of the next 10 years after the Messi situation and the deffered wages issue.

imstead they are selling future earnings to venture capitalists and for what? Cesar Azpilicueta - crazy

we’ve not filled the CM with gold standard quality for more than a decade. We’ve always been blessed since the late 80s. Hope we fork out the way extra 15 million quid on Frenkie

80s (Robbo)
90s (Ince, Keane, Scholes, Butt)
00s (Keane, Scholes, Carrick, Giggsy)
10s (turned to shite despite signing Pogba, retraining Rooney to CM….)

I think this saga will be taking a back seat at the moment, as the Ronaldo issue will be taking up most of the club’s bandwidth

Says he's owed €88.5m in the article, is that including future salary also?

I assume that's just the amount left on the remainder of his contract. They've only been deferring wages over the past couple of years, I doubt he was on €40m+ per year.

Tbf to Laporte its not a mess that was his doing. Can you imagine the first day when he walking into the office again and spoke to the CFO? ''What do you mean we owe money to the fax paper/stationary company?''!!

There are just no easy choices for the current and future leadership of Barca. I bet the socios, not understanding intricate accounting and finance -- will put pressure on any future presidential candidates to make them feel good and buy the big names again.

The worse the voting socios feel the bigger names they will want. Then the spiral continues.

Its strange -- the Messi years and the Fergie years and the post-years. Too long of a good thing makes clubs either complacent to change or re-structure as in United or desperate to keep the good times going as in Barca.

That's what I thought, strange wording as if de Jong signs for us then it wouldn't be €88.5m, just the reported €17.5m that he's owed.
You mean 18.5m i hope?
Nope, the article says €88.5m for some reason, I'm putting it down to poor wording from Luckhurst though.

No other club. No other.

I got the memo, I need to make a huge drama out of it.

Licking Barca.. Jesus.
What's so Jesus about it?
Do you know Frenkie has said that? Sounds like you're privy to his private conversations.

City spent a year chasing Haaland.
Absolutely untrue about Haaland.
They just triggered his clause.
2 months is nothing. Hard deals take time. Yeah, I have seen other deals take just as much time. It’s not something that only happens with us.

Everyone would obviously like to see things move faster, but that’s not the reality with every deal out there. In this case it’s not just us and Barca haggling on the fixed fee. It’s also intern issues with Barca and the player.

Calling it embarrassing is way off mark.
If two months ls nothing for you it's over the top for many people.
Absolutely nothing so far about this transfer is “embarrassing” for United. Barcelona have a terrible financial situation in which they have had to put a player up for sale, a player our manager has worked excellent with earlier in his career.

United have negotiated and agreed on a price with the selling club and are now awaiting the results of negotiations between the player and the club.

If that embarrasses you, my God you get embarrassed bizarrely & easily.
And it seems that you don't get embarrassed at all.
I'm actually embarrassed for you that you're not embarrassed.
Ridiculous comment with no quality in it.
To be honest this view is ridiculous itself.

If United were happy to ‘lick Barca’ then we’d have caved in and paid the wages or whatever else it took to get the deal done.

The club are negotiating and happy to wait it out. Under the circumstances that is the right thing to do.

Let’s see when the club decide to go to plan B and what that looks like before judging.

Liverpool City and Spurs haven’t been signing a star player from an elite club have they? Come on. You’re smarter than this.
Well those teams concluded their dealings immediately.
And its been know for a number of years that we take ages to get the players we go for. Were you happy with Woodward and the way he went about his job?
Little bit hysterical.
It’s no such thing.

I haven't seen one decent quality comment from you here yet.

My friends, I have the right to comment just as much as any of you and I stick to my opinion and many others that this has been embarrassing for our club. Go to twitter and you'll see what the majority of United supporters all over the world are commenting and they certainly agree with my view about this.

So how would you explain what & why its taken 2 months and yet no conclusion?

The difference between de Jong saying he wants to stay and wants to leave is a €3M bonus.

Ask yourself, what would you do?
It's quite pointless to ask myself what I would do.

€3M, in my current situation, would be an absolutely life-changing amount of money. I'd never have to work again if I didn't want to and I could live a life of ease and comfort. So of course I wouldn't turn it down.

However, I'm not a professional footballer who's already earned millions. I'm not sure what I would or wouldn't do in that situation and it would depend on a great many factors, rather than simply "it's a lot of money!!!".

In terms of negotiating with the club, sure, but that was after months and months of negotiating with the player.

It actually proves my point really, if you go to a City forum they will have been following their own Haaland saga for ages now and probably think it took forever, but from the outside looking in it looks like a quick bit of business.

When you follow every single tweet like us muppets do the Malacia deal even looks like it dragged. :D
