Can someone explain how any of this is legal? They owe their players, they owe other clubs, they owe banks and they are somehow building a new stadium and want more signings? Aren't there rules for this kind of thing?

This is why it is difficult. Barca owes a lot of money to not just players, but for all their long installment buys.

That is some top tier mismanagement. I never understood why they constantly gave Messi such outlandish contracts, yes I understand he's Messi, but even CR7 never went to those levels. Messi was also unlikely to ever leave them, so it's not like it was totally necessary. From there it spiralled with other contracts, now it seems they were actually worse than us in that regard. On top of that they absolutely squandered the Neymar money.

Common sense would dictate that they use their money to pay off everything and take a few years in the wilderness; they're unlikely to really miss out on top 4 and they're still producing or acquiring good young talent. They would be back sooner rather than later, but they're here signing players left right and centre and still saddled with huge wages.

Oh yes... he ABSOLUTELY doesn't want to leave. 100%, Berger has spoken, it is done.

Are all publications called Sport useless bags of crap?
Berger is reliable though
More and more reports are worryingly starting to back track

His fiance probably doesn't want to leave Barcelona as they just bought a new house, there are factors contributing to him wanting to stay put that don't involve football.

So you truly think that we had no indications from the player that he wanted the move?
We don't know what he's truly thinking, what he says to the media might not be what he's telling the clubs/agent. We just don't know

Hehe this ends with mutual agreement between Barca and De Jong. Snore.

He is reliable for German news though this does just smack of looking at him returning to training tomorrow and putting 2+2 together.
So a german reporter has solid information about a dutch player at a Spanish club potentially moving to an English club?
Does that make sense? I really don't know

Why do we dismiss every report of him being reluctant to leave as BS? Don’t you think there is a possibility of it being the case?

If this transfer fails because the player rejects us it'll be embarrassing for the club, considering the time and effort spent to bring him here. I hope these reports are bullshit.

Personally I’d look at ETH who made a player he knows and has spoken to regularly his top target. If it turns out he never wanted to come regardless then I’d kinda think what in the name of feck were they talking about. Which is why I think it’s unlikely to be true. It’s all a game of poker.

If the club doesnt get this deal done soon, its a big blemish on Arnold and Murtoughs first summer transfer window as CEO and DOF.

Why do we dismiss any positive news as rubbish but jump on the negative and believe it as gospel truth?
I just do not believe that we would spend so much time on de Jong if we weren't certain he'd come. As i say, what he says to the media might be totally different to what he's saying to the clubs. Plus if he was so intent on staying, why would Barca do all they could to keep him? Why would they reiterate he isn't for sale unless they really need too?? It's just stupid, they could just keep their mouths shut and reject any offer out of hand

I thought they would look at the transfer window as a way of actually signing players as opposed to spending all of it chasing players who clearly do not want to come here and ending up empty handed

I just don't get the logic of he "clearly" doesn't want to come? Do you not think EtH would have done his research with FdJ before even bidding on him?

Is it better to sign players to a system? Or just bring in bodies to appease the fans?

We've all asked for change in the football set up, and we have got it. Surely, we should give the new team the benefit of doubt before moaning?

Nope, otherwise ETH and Murtough wouldn’t be so stupid as to waste 8 weeks chasing a player who has no interest in signing here. We’d already have moved on and signed other midfielders as it is the managers priority.

Yeah it wouldn't be a good look for Ten Hag. Surely he must've gotten assurances.

There have been consistent reports that De Jong doesn’t want to leave Barcelona, and certainly not to go to United, but Barca are clearly trying to force him out, and thereby forego the higher wages he would have received in the later years of his contract.

I could have wrote that tweet which Berger has written after reading the Marca article. Next to no new information. Laurie mentioned that FDJ has told us that he will join us incase he leaves Barca. Basically there is no development. Barca need some additional investment before they can use transfer money. All of their transfer is on hold till then

He is clearly for sale, whatever Barca are telling the media doesn’t matter. And I am not saying FdJ doesn’t want to come here. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle, he most likely prefers staying but if the solution regarding lowering his wages is not found, he would leave. We just shouldn’t ignore every report of him not wanting to leave and at the same time trust equally questionable sources telling he dreams to play for United.

Amazing FdJ, or his agent, told Berger that they don't want to come to United, however, neither of them had the decency to tell EtH, or the club, even though they have close working relationships!
Or maybe, just maaaaybe he's contacted his friends at Sport in Spain and got some juicy gossip from them, because it seems very similar to the stuff they put out the other day

If it was just United pushing, I could maybe believe it. But the reports of ETH being in frequent contact with him makes it impossible to think he'd flat out reject us and not mention it to ETH

You like to think so but sadly this is the internet and that’s not how it works around here.

Ditto. 100% on the new manager if it turns out de Jong was never interested in a move to United.

It’s why I still don’t believe it. Sure, he wants to stay and get paid as per his deal, but that looks impossible. I’m sure Mane wanted to stay at Liverpool and earn the same money as Salah, when we can’t have what we want, we have to have an alternative.

Haha Wow, so we hold all the cards then and they desperately need this Frenkie deal done.

Seems a fair analysis of the situation to me.

Not even United are dumb enough to have spent the window chasing a deal for a player they’ve not had the green light from personally. It just isn’t possible.
