is this the worst transfer saga we’ve had? I’m sure I enjoyed the Pogba and Sancho ones more, this feels flat, or am I just getting too old for this?!
Sancho most definitely worse

The problem with this negotiation is not the asking fee for Frenkie, it’s that they want us to suck them off while grinning as stupid twats.

You forgetting that he needs to take a massive wage cut on a new contract to stay at Barca?
He does? These contracts are guaranteed. He is still under contract at Barca, they have a legal obligation to pay him according to the terms of the contract. This is a simple case from a legal perspective, if it came to litigation, he would win and probably get punitive damages and interest on back pay owed.

The club want him to take a pay cut, but they can’t force him. The only way he would get less than what was I. The contract would be for Barca to declare bankruptcy, which isn’t going to happen because the ramifications are to dire to contemplate.

If he refuses to take a pay cut and the club decides to sell him, he’ll still have quite a bit of control over where he goes to play.

To summarise what the Athletic lads have said today:

- No mention of Chelsea’s involvement.
- United and Barcelona have met multiple times about the sale of De Jong. United made two bids, one was accepted.
- the player would prefer to stay at Barcelona, however he’s aware Barca have accepted a bid for him and he’s told them that he’ll leave if they pay up the deferred wages they owe him. Barcelona have said that’s Uniteds problem if they want you, United have said that’s Barcelona’s problem, they’re the ones that haven’t paid you.
- Ten Hag has spoken to De Jong
- De Jong will most likely go on tour with Barcelona next week.
- This will most likely roll on until the end of the window unless Barcelona force the issue and tell him he has to go so they can free up wages, register new players they’ve just signed and pay him what they owe him.
- also, don’t pay attention to MARCA, they’re stirring the pot to wind Barca up.
The nerve.

If the shit about deferred wages is true, this isn't getting resolved anytime soon.

I think all these points mentioned are what we actually are doing.
Hope so. I’d be surprised if we were in for Bellingham at this stage though.

Makes the decision not to reinforce last January with a midfielder / DM all the more perplexing. Lose out on top 4, wave goodbye to Matic and Pogba (which I support) fail to have a constructive plan to strengthen midfield… sigh. Hopes pinned on DvB finally turning good — he’s looked patently awful — or Garner stepping up.

I really don't get Farcelona's stance here.

It would be like if I went down to the car dealership and was willing to pay $30,000 for a new car (close to the MSRP), the dealer agreed the price, then was like "Actually, we still owe $10,000 to the wholesaler on this model, so why don't you pay that $10,000 on top of the agreed fee as well." Wait, what?!

If Chelsea (big IF) are considering to offer 2 players plus 60m. Then we should walk right away from the deal and stop wasting time.

Feck Barça and feck Frenkie. We should stay a million miles away from the mess, and not even think about helping them.

I'm willing to bet they really aren't.

In fact I'm betting this whole this is being done by Barca to get united to pay up. Absolutely no other source, nearly 7 or 8 hours later have picked up on it except for those being bed by Barca themselves

Last time I checked in here the news seemed to be Barcelona had accepted our offer and it was the wage deferral that was an issue… have things changed?

I’m surprised Chelsea’s top sources and journos haven’t pick this one up yet considering it’s huge news. So I gather this interest of theirs is absolutely false

State of the recent news....even now after 9 weeks we're hearing he still wants to stay at Barce and personal terms haven't even been discussed

It's been bad in previous summers but this one will turn into a complete farce.

Frenkie's agent is meeting United reps in London while Chelsea execs are in Barcelona...

At this point I'm really not sure too many people are aware of exactly where the feck this deal is at. The only new update we've had is Chelsea ramping up their interest, and this update has almost certainly come from Barca's side which means it might be posturing on their side. (Or it could be entirely legitimate!)

Considering just how many conflicting stories are flying about day-by-day, it seems wise to only really start getting excited/annoyed about this when the reports from reliable sources corroborate one another.

I've been tracking flights out of Barcelona airport all day looking for scoops. Nothing interesting yet to report, but I will carry on like our negotiators until at least 10pm.

The problem with deferring wages is that if Barca becomes insolvent/bankrupt then banks and vendors have the first right over any cash from asset sales. The players will be left with whatever little is remaining. I can see the following scenario play out if Barca go insolvent:
  1. Spanish/Catalonia government tries to help Barca but European courts call it unfair state sponsored help. Thanks to Tebas' attacks, City/PSG will be more than happy to sue if direct government involvement takes place.
  2. There won't be a rapid fire sale of assets (players) as this would make Barca unattractive. Instead Barca will try to follow a German model of part fan ownership. Most buyers who will be interested will be corporations/big business, as wealthy individuals would prefer full control, unlike corporations who'd be more focused on their ability to market products.
  3. Either ways the new owners will demand zero responsibility for any previous liabilities (including deferred player wages). I can see numerous lawsuits from players/clubs/vendors challenging the fair value/acquisition cost of Barca. If the acquisition cost is too low, players may not get all their deferred wages and clubs owed transfer money may not get all their transfer fees from the stake sale.
  4. The divestment process will keep dragging on because of this. Barca keeps getting less valuable and post-acquisition I can see them as a Europa-level team for a few years.
If I was a young player entering my prime and yet to earn a lot of money, I'd avoid Barca till they were fully sorted.

I would avoid barca as well, but many agent and players want to play there

What’s wrong with them? You have to be f******* s******

Again, the same people reporting Chelsea interest whilst absolutely no one else does. Stupidly annoying now

Yeah, we're selling them Azpi and Alonso, not buying anyone.

Though i am starting to wonder why your lot had to fly to Spain when Barca are the ones who are buying your players. The buyer should always be going to the seller, no? Unless your new owners are very hands on

Aren't there rumours they want Dest?

Yeah, it makes no sense from Chelsea's perspective to be doing the visiting if Barcelona are the ones looking to buy.

Also, why would Chelsea make an offer for the player if they aren't sure he'd pick them over us?

Here's what a Chelsea journalist has to say about Todd Boehly's arrival at Barcelona:
