I'd imagine that this situation is something of a legal minefield, as it's going to be really difficult to arrange payment of de Jongs "back pay" owed by Barca because they are struggling with cash flow right now (and want to spend on transfers) and it will also be a tricky situation to pay this at some point down the road - I'm sure another club sending money to a player who plays for another club might be misinterpreted as potential bribery if they don't follow the normal rules.

I know it used to be the case that the English FA acted as a "clearing house" to process such payments in the past, so everything was kept above board. (Eg payments around a certain Ballotelli went on for YEARS!) However I'd imagine getting Barca to commit to a definite series of fixed payments would be quite difficult at the moment. I suspect they want to sound out all their options , get their prices fixed and only then will they be able to agree a payment plan with EdJ.

This has the added benefit from Barca's point of view that as the saga drags on maybe another party will be interested, or United get frustrated and offer more cash to speed things up.

It's frustrating that EdJ won't be around for much of preseason (I think this will literally go down to the wire unless we force the issue) but at least he knows Erik's system so he just needs to get used to where his midfield partners tend to go so he should be quick to integrate into the system.

Was really excited about this signing but I have no clue if this will happen and if it does when.
Think it is time for us to look at real plan Bs as who knows what Barca is possible off. They would be a downgrade on FdJ but Neves and Tielemans should be explores. Another season with current midfield (plus Eriksen) is going to be painful...need to get a move on.
Honestly, I don't think Barcelona have any options other than fire sale after this summer. Even if we don't get him now, he'll walk for next to nothing when they stop paying the players at some point this season.

Maybe Frankie's silence on this whole issue has nothing to do with not wanting the MUFC move but is simply because he doesn't want lose his leverage with Barca.
He wants what he is owed for the deferred salary from the last two seasons, so he's making them squirm. Barca hoping for a 2nd bidder or United getting pressured by fans into more guaranteed money so they can pay off Frenkie with some of the money.

i don't even understand Barca's end game any more. He's owed a fecking mountain of money, but they are threatening him with a sale to MUFC if he doesn't take ANOTHER pay cut? So what then? They are just never going to pay him? Nothing makes sense here. So when he's owed 100 million in back pay what are they going to do if he stays? threaten to sell him to Bayern?

I'm at a loss to what Barca think they are tempting Frenkie to stay with.
Their plan is "we'll send you off with €30m in your back pocket in 5 years from the money we owe you". That's what they did with Pique and the likes, he's currently not being paid at all.

Exactly and that’s why I don’t understand why some posters think he’s going to opt to stay with them.

It makes more sense to him to join United, get a new honourable contract with signing on fee and then leave his agent and the courts to chase what’s owed to him.

Only an idiot would stay with that same employer as you’ve less chance of getting your money back any time soon and you’re stuck in a contract with them so essentially handing back the power.

Makes no sense.

A second bidder helps United. We've waited for other clubs to make a bid then swooped in on the deals we've got going on so far. Players still want to play for United over other clubs.

And why would you believe that? as a player?
I wouldn't believe a fecking word of it but if I were a Catalan and I got to play for Barcelona, maybe one day go on to work at the club as a president or something, maybe I'd see this as favours earned when it came down to ending my career and having a job for life.

He wouldn't have to deal with anything, his agent would take care of it all along with his legal team. He'd never have to step foot in court.
It still takes time. Even clear cut court cases can be dragged for years if the other side have the money and lawyers to do so. He already significantly cut his wages for the past 2 years and is owed 16m. He was owed more money than he was actually paid in the last 2 years (paid 9m, owed 16m). I assume he would want to at least get some of it now, but Barca is not giving him anything.

He is not even trying to stay if you exclude news from Barca's mouthpieces. He had phone calls with Ten Hag every day and is trying to resolve the issue, but Barca just keep changing their stance and just yesterday told us that they will no longer go ahead with the agreed 65m upfront fee but now wants 75m instead. No idea why you keep blaming everything on FDJ when Barca is fecking him over.

So he can just leave for United, get paid a salary and have his agent and legal team deal with it until it's resolved. He's not going to be sitting in his kitchen reading through contracts and legal statements. This kind of stuff happens all the time.

And I haven't blamed anything on De Jong, I'm just saying that the reason given isn't the reason the deal is being held up. It's most likely Barcelona looking for a way to make more money out of United.

I genuinely think they’re hoping, as I suspect they are with the likes of Messi, Pique, Alba and Busquets, that they’ll never have to pay it. Or at least not the whole amount.

The more distance between the debt and the actual payment, together with the PR stuff that makes people who refuse to accept less than they are legally entitled to look like thr bad guys with the fans, means that they may believe that the players will either negotiate a lower figure later, or forego the money altogether.

Exactly that’s what anyone with sense would do. Bag a new deal, signing on fee and leave what’s owed to go through the courts.

What you don’t do is stay at the club and hand them the power back. Far less chance of getting what’s owed to you.

With the players Barca are looking at bringing in, they’re obviously trying for one last push at UCL and La Liga, to try and balance the books, but if they miss out, wow, they’re going to be in a big mess.

Simon Stone also spoke of it referencing Marca. He's not usually one to not verify this sort of thing

Well, if this is true, then FDJ not only needs a new club but a new agent as well. A new, less naive brain wouldn't go amiss either

#freededong also #paytheguywhathesowedffs

Exactly, once they know you'll hang around they know they can take the piss. They'll probably pay him eventually but he could have retired by that point.

It might raise the price for Frenkie, I don't doubt that he wants to join us but right now - there's more to the story than FdJ loves Barca and doesn't want to leave.

Barca seem to be trying to get out of honoring a player's deferred wages that was structured into a new contract. And if Frenkie is not sold Barca, are gonna have to make other moves to be able to register the likes of Kessie, Christansen, etc.

I hope FdJ squeezes Barca for every penny they owe him. They've become such a shady club doing trashy stuff.

It probably will do, but let's say we offer €65m, Chelsea offer €70m, we say "no thanks", Barcelona accept Chelsea's bid, we come back with €65m guaranteed, and up to €75m with add-ons. What are Barcelona going to do?

They're going to accept both. Either way, it seems there is an agreement for sale price done, it's other details that are holding it up.

Is this concrete info or speculation? I can't imagine FDJ would even consider entering into a contract like this one.
During their COVID struggles, they asked all their high earners to defer payments. Not a massive deal usually to say you'll make all the money you were supposed to make eventually. Barca is scummy where they'll make you defer, and then tell you when you're due your money that they want to sell you or permanently lower your contract by even more.

Why do Barcelona keep signing more players if they are broke.
They signed 2 blokes a few days ago and are chasing Silva and Lewa.
Is the government going to bail them out eventually?

Wankstain of a club. Hope we never do business with them again after this

Ah well.
Hope we never do business with Barcelona again.
Been a total mess in all honesty.

We might still get him but you'd have to wonder why the club were willing to enter into negotiations this ridiculously messy in the first place. Stinks of our usual naivety.

Ah yes, here are the doom and groomers again because Laliar has come out again and professed the truth of Barca.

We don't want to sell him unless we absolutely have too = We don't want to sell him unless he refuses to reduce his pay.

Jesus guys we've been through this many times now
