Whitwell on Talk of the Devils/The Athletic Football podcast seemed pretty certain this isn't happening.
Is Whitwell the one that had all the early info on Casemiro? No? Oh wait that was none of the English journalists because they’re all in the dark.

Why? Because I’m not fooling myself in to believing this is still happening?
If you must know, it has been confirmed in multiversal plentifold that things are, in fact, happening.

For a moment I thought you were being sarcastic.

Nope. I genuinely believed we should have moved on from this deal weeks ago. Signing Casemiro was a good start but I’d still like us to sign a partner for him, someone like a Savic to play a more box to box role i think could work well.

I really hope we have an alternative lined up. Casemiro needs a quality partner, it can easily be the difference between top 4 or not.

If he doesn't want to join now there's no reason to assume he'll join next summer so we need to move on.
Casemiro plays regularly with Fred for Brazil. Maybe now that Fred is free of defensive duties we see the Fred that plays for Brazil

Because just like us, if we were playing for Manchester United we'd move heaven or high water just to get to play for the club even if they were terrible. It's the same for De Jong, he's wanted to play for them since he was a child and he is doing so, so he doesn't want that to end. Add on top the beautiful location and such and why the hell would anyone want to leave that scenario? I get they have treated him like dirt this summer and honestly he has a bit of stockholm syndrome for just accepting this. If he can just get past the transfer window however then Barcelona cannot do anything and i've no doubt the relationship will end up being repaired and everyone will just move on eventually.
You're naive if you think FDJ is a fan like the rest of us. He's a professional footballer.

Its incredibly rare for a footballer to stay at a club out of fandom. And if if they do it always happens to be a massive club that pays enormous salaries, such as Barca. The ones that do stay at non behemoth clubs almost always were not good enough to get great offers.

I can't recall a single Ajax player for example that had opportunities to go to a big club and decided to stay because "dream club".

FDJ is talking out of his ass.

From what I can tell it's a staredown that will go to deadline day. I can assure you, he most certainly will feck off rather than sit on the bench in a world cup year.

You'd be disappointed then.

I watch Brazil, Fred is pretty decent for them but he ain't world class and won't be good enough to win the league.

He's a decent squad option but we've seen over the course of 4 years he's not the answer.

Think of the profile of technical quality ETH has targeted with De Jong, and then compare that to Fred.

Fred will be nothing more than a stopgap until we sign an elite midfielder. We just have to hope it's this summer rather than next.

Oh dear, well, there’s still plenty of us persisting because it is not actually “over”, is it?

I mean we could move on regardless but it’s not over until someone with credibility, based on fact, says so (or the window closes). Until then, why bother to declare it “over”? Unless it really is “over”. Is it “over”? Perhaps it is.

Or is it?

To be fair those kinds of players do exist but they're incredibly rare.

Obviously we have no idea the inner thinking of the United braintrust...but I'd argue that FDJ makes even more sense now that we have Casemiro. A perfect, and I mean perfect, compliment to FDJ's style IMHO. Offering a chance to play for ETH was fine (although it never seemed like a burning desire). But I think now offering a chance to play with Casemiro and ETH is a genuine motivator. I have to think that means we think it's still possible and the Casemiro move MIGHT have been geared towards getting this done when it presented itself.

Of course thats my muppet brain thinking...

I like the way your muppet brain thinks.

Don't get me wrong. I've been a Frenkie fan since his Ajax days. A midfield of Casemiro, Frenkie and either Bruno or Eriksen would be sublime. But if we can't get him then we could use Fred until the right person comes along. ( Maybe Iqbal, the closest we have to Frenkie)

I think this is right. I think FDJ makes us world class in MF. But I think Fred benefits most from the Casemiro impact. Fred's shown signs of pretty good to great play with the right MF compliment.

Plus...as I've said in other posts...I would love to see the Barca implode by having to deal with this financially.

I do agree that many footballers talk shit in regards to 'dream club', Frenkie might be one of those rare cases but I doubt it. We had to pay him more to stop him joining PSG.

On the last part, it seems you are a few weeks behind. He isn't going to be benched, Xavi even said so. Gavi isn't ready to be a starter and Kessie is an unknown as to how he fits.

Yeah but that’s the way these guys are. It gives authority to what they say if they make it sound certain. Nobody would even listen to them if they went around saying “don’t know, not sure, can’t find out, in the dark, no clue, maybe yes maybe no…”.

Even I realise it’s not very likely but this fake certainty annoys me.

I was shocked that we were still posting in here, so thought I would come have a look but I'm assuming that the posts about him signing still are just being playful and carrying on the fun?

I have a family member in the NHL. He signed with his dream club as a kid and played for many years. When he was a unrestricted FA though he couldn't care less anymore. At that point he had had issues with coaches and the front office, didn't love the city, etc. It was all business and he went to the team he had the best money and opportunity from.

It all becomes business and opportunity with these guys. If FDJ is an adult...he'll pick the team that gives him the best playing opportunity (style and time), as well as the best money. Thats what always ends up happening.

Yeah, it could perhaps get us to top 4, but we'd definitely need an upgrade were we to challenge for the title.

Agreed, but if we don't get Frenkie now there will be no time to find someone else of near equal quality before the window closes

But why? If we plan to buy Antony and Gakpo, and Antony alone will likely be more expensive than de Jong, what makes you think we won’t buy de Jong (should he agree to move)?

I'm not sure how much upgrading you need from a MF of Bruno, Eriksen, FDJ, and Casemiro. Thats top top class. I get it s a few of those guys are older and would need replacing in the future...but thats a MF you could win a title with...

Meant that in case we don't get frenkie and have to play a fre casemiro double pivot.

Twitter posts about his agent being there today, but no context why. Muppets better get on this!!!

Yes i was surprised when many posters corrected me and told me that Brazil are favourites for the World Cup. From the few games I've watched the Brazilian midfield is pretty average.

Unfortunately, there was also a clip in the story where he showed Chelsea’s logo. Just after the Mayfair story. It might be that they’re discussing with both clubs.

Thats the info i took from twitter and most of the people added that probably the agent has nothing to do with De Jong and most likely he is sorting the transfer for Ziyech to Ajax. PS: You can see Ziyech in the clip !

We all seen this?

They could definitely win it for the sheer amount of quality they have elsewhere on the pitch but yeah, their midfielder leaves a lot to be desired especially compared to their great midfields of the past.
