Correct, we want to pay a percentage, but there's no indication that Chelsea want to pay it all (Ornstein's statement is vague on this). Ben Jacobs clears this up by saying that both Chelsea and United's offers are similar (including in covering the salary debt).

Yeah, in a roundabout sort of way. Rivals getting weaker is the next best thing to us getting stronger.
It's like City choosing to avoid/let us gazump them for Fred, Sanchez etc made up weaker in certain ways.
Again, a lot of conjectures about Chelsea from people who clearly don't watch or follow the team and manager enough. It makes absolute sense for us to be going for a midfielder with the profile of De Jong. Kante and Jorginho are both in their 30s, on big wages with just a year left on their contracts. Kante has been having niggling injuries slowing him for the past two seasons and Jorginho is only gonna get slower. It looks likely both might be let go after this season (Jorginho probably sooner) freeing up their wages. Of course we can absolutely do 400k in that scenario. If Kante and Jorginho both left we'd be left with only Kovacic and Gallagher as out and out senior Central midfielders in the squad (Mount solely plays as one of two wide AMs and Tuchel has been using RLC as backup RWB for James throughout preseason and even came on as such against Everton). Getting a creative, in his prime midfielder like De Jong makes absolute sense. We clearly need another CB (may not even be 80+ Fofana but someone cheaper by the end of the window) but might even do without for at least the first part of the season when you put into consideration Tuchels use of RLC as backup RWB. We'll have James and RLC for RWB, Chalobah and Azpi for RCB, Silva and Ampadu for Central Defender, Koulibaly for LCB, Chilwell for RWB and Cucurella can stand in for(our even start over) Chilwell at LWB and Koulibaly at RCB. Will be good enough until the world cup and winter widow where we can reassess.
For the need of a striker, we are going with the false 9 model that won us the CL and I for one like that. Havertz will be the starting false 9 with Broja as the out and out number 9 if it's needed with Sterling,Mount, Pulisic, CHO and Ziyech filling the 2AM spots in support. At most we will do there is get a cheap, out of favor experienced player in there on loan (hence the links to Auba and Depay).

Of course it is. Both are world class midfielders. I think it's sort of interesting why Chelsea wants him as they are quite similar in many ways. I don't know whether you would want two of the same type of midfielder paired together like these two.

I don't know why they're so smug though. All reports are mainly speculative and opinionated. Yes we know Chelsea are interested, but we don't don't know the level of interest. The latest reliable report has Chelsea still only interested but not close to making any kind of bid

If Chelsea (a direct rival for Top 4) get FDJ, the Glazers will have to kiss goodbye to Top 4 since it strengthens Chelsea and weakens United at the same time. This is the stark reality and choice they face. Without spending on at least 2 alternative midfielders (since our dithering has left us here) there seems to be no hope.
Maybe we can fool Tuchel into gazumping us for Rabiot instead

As I said here this morning, Kova is our best midfielder now. We wouldn’t let him go and especially not to a direct rival.
It would have been good to get him in as part of the building blocks of ten Hag's new United regardless.
Yeah I dont think we will sign him, Chelsea offer far more, London and UCL. We need to move on and start bringing people in, we have fallen even further behind in the last 3 months as our squad is weaker than it was in May. Think about that, our squad is weaker than it was during the worst EPL season we have ever had.

I don't see how Tuchel keeps all those midfielders happy, they'll all be wanting to play a lot more than some of them will be.
Do you not find it odd that with them being quite similar player how they both potentially fit into the team together?
