To be fair if him and his agent are indeed holding on until they get the 17m upfront, they'll be waiting a very very long time. No chance is that happening. They simply don't have the funds for that.

Can someone explain to me why FFP stops Barca from keeping De Jong on the same wages, but doesnt stop them from buying so many new players on high wages?

Damn who hurt you? Haha probably got a scolding from mom telling you to move out of her basement already so you decided to be a tough guy on the internet.
 compare our comments.
I just don't like bad contraceptive techniques.

Why would the fans hate someone whose insisting on what he's due?

do you know barca fans? Plus it will be spun by laporta “Unfortunately I was unable to bring in all the players I wanted this year, which means that we will be unlikely to compete in la liga and cl, this has come about due to one or two contractual obligations we have and la ligas ffp rulings”
Barca have form for shafting players and people, and use their mouthpieces to do the dirty wotk

It doesn’t stop them from keeping him. They would probably rather sell him because it’s not economically reasonable to keep him when you have to pay him €20m a year and they could get a €80m fee from United but I don’t buy it at all that there’s this ‘if they don’t sell FDJ they go bust’ thing at all. If their were serious about their financial issues they wouldn’t have just spent €170m on Lewandowski, Raphinha and Kounde as they are looking to spend even more on Azpi and Bernardo.

They just mortgages their next 20 or 25 years so should be fine cash flow wise.

Football is a part of what we are. We're also adults who live out there, go to work and who understand what working under a lousy employer means. Surely most Barcelona fans can acknowledge that its not fair for their club not to pay De Jong what is due especially since

a- he bailed them out during the Covid crisis
b- they don't have money for him but they seem quite comfortable in going full transfer muppet mode

I am also curious if there is a PFA equivalent in La Liga. Surely they can't be happy with the way Barca is treating their own players.

Go read any tweet that is put out about FdJ and you will get a feel for how absolutely they buy in to what the club tells them without any critical thinking. The comments I have seen mainly come down to FdJ should take the pay cut, this was an old regime contract that barca can not afford, and if he loves barca he would do the right thing.

the Spanish PFA won’t say anything, they are too much in the pocket themselves of barca and real. In fact they rarely say anything at all.

They are absolute cnuts. They are meant to take the owed wages out of the OG fee but are essentially asking us to pay his services for a period he was a Barca player. We should tell them to piss off and if ETH doesn't understand where we're coming from should lose the extensive transfer privileges we're affording him. Being asked to pay the owed amount is so insulting. Not sure I'm more disgusted by Barca conducting this kind of business or the fact we're even entertaining them. They have literally no leverage over us beyond our total lack of imagination for signing midfielders. No way FDJ is the only player in world football that can both improve us and work with ETH. Start lining up alternate targets.
I don't see it like that at all. The deferred wages are an amount Barcelona need. Whether they are baked in the transfer fee we've already negotiated or not, doesn't matter one bit to me and I don't get why it does to you or others.

The important part is that Barcelona still don't want to pay him. Beyond that, how much we pay and how are that money used by Barcelona, it's a money question and I don't really care.

Just listening to the United podcast from The Athletic and while neither are ruling out a move, Mitten and Whitwell don't seem confident this will happen, certainly a lot less so than a few weeks before.

Mitten is about 3rd tier and was always a. Negative reporter, whitwell not much better and neither clearly have any real information.

So isnt the issue that keeping FdJ stops them from registering new players? So they have to shave his 350k wages off the books, for FFP, but they are okay to add over half a million in wages for the new players? Something's not adding up.

It doesn’t, they can keep him on his current wage. They can’t do that AND add a shit load more wages to their wage bill.

I mean it doesnt make sense. Even if say they save 150k/w by reducing his wages by half, surely all the new player wages being added are worth much more than 150k?

Then you've completely missed the point people are meaning. Let me try again, so they are selling the player to raise funds to service internal expenses, debts etc. They shouldn't ask a 3rd party buyer, us in this case, to cover those debts. Their debts should have nothing to do with us if they arent being shady. The point isn't where the debts are baked in the fee, the point is they shouldnt even be a part of the transaction. That should have been the whole point of selling the player to raise funds in the first place. The entire complication is unnecessary and is a product of their greed and attempt at dodging their obligation.

This just isn't true.

Mitten is one of the closest reporters to United with proven sources at the club. He's helped write most of the players autobiographies. He's been named as respected by the likes of Rashford, Neville, Rio to name a few. He doesn't get involved massively in transfers as he's said many times that clubs use reporters to push their agendas and it can make a journalist look like a lier. He lives out in Spain and reports on Barca often. Plainly put, Mitten is one of the most reliable and respected journalists out there.

You just know that Laporta will be saying to Frenkie;

"If you love the club that much, you'll leave so we can sign these players and have the best chance of success..."

It looks to me like you are trying to create some mental 'types of money' here.

To me, there is only one thing: the amount we will pay total for transfer and wages. Whether part of that money is used to cover his deferred wages, his brother's shoe-shopping addiction or the transportation of Frenkie and his fiancee's belongings from Barcelona to Manchester, I couldn't care less.

Yes, Barcelona are acting like absolute scammers, buying players and pretending like they don't have money, all while figuring out how to register players. But why would I care? I don't support Barcelona, I only want us to sign the players the manager needs to be successful. Beyond that, how it happens, what are the money covering, how much are we paying - don't really care.

Every soundbite from Barca is basically a verbal 69 between them and FdJ before ending with "but there is an economic situation..."

They will register all new players once all the levers are on. €20m saving on FDJ salary is not needed.

Laporte is so predictable, so now if Frenkie leaves it's all on him as he stabbed Barca in the back and left during Barca's hard times.

And everyone wanted fan-owned clubs? This is what you get when you have elections every few years.
Everything is political and telling what the fans want to hear.
A nightmare of 24/7/365 soap opera.

Just found out that FDJs agent, Dursun Ali, also represents Malacia, Lindelof and Van de Beek. He s been at old trafford a fair bit recently. For what it's worth, no way we pursue this deal without certainty that FDJ would come as we would have had ample opportunity to discuss in depth with Dursun Ali over recent weeks with Donny return and Malacia signing. Am i clutching at straws here? Maybe but seems logical to me.

Agreed.

Even if you don't always like the stuff Mitten writes, he is always well sourced. If he gets stuff 'wrong' its likely because he trusted a source that either wasn't totally on top of the info or the situation simply changed.

When it comes to De Jong, maybe a month ago people in Manchester were telling him they were confident in getting De Jong, everything from the Barcelona end was bluff and he took that at face value. Or maybe, at that time, it genuinely was the situation. Its not unthinkable that Barcelona's attitude towards the third lever might have changed in a month or whatnot.

I'm inclined to believe what Andy says over a lot of other reporters and pundits.

As I've said before, at present, I'd be more surprised if De Jong arrives at United than if he doesn't. I'd love to be proven wrong. We are crying out for what he can offer. However, when you add up all the little bits of information we're getting. You have to think the only way this gets done is if Barcelona sweetens the pill enough for De Jong to swallow it.

The thing about this is, you are right but it will probably take another signing 6 months to learn what de Jong already knows. He will fit straight in from the start, hence the risk. If it was so easy to learn the system then i’m sure we would have signed someone else by now. So the risk of waiting a few extra weeks is too much to resist rather than having someone that maybe won’t hit the ground for another 6 month+.
