I predict he'll stay at Barca, got annoyed by the lack of game time, leave in 12 months time and sign for another club

Just like Fabregas did

I’ll go along with that. Probably City just to make matters worse.

It will be bloodbath on here when Frenkie actually follows his heart and chooses Barca over money. ;)
Not really.

The vast majority are already preparing themselves for the possibility he might not sign. Sure, we'll be upset, but life goes on. Our club will get ripped to shreds by rival fans and our own unfortunately. Which is fecked up because the club got turned down by a fanatic desperado. If FdJ ends up choosing Barca, nothing could have stopped it.

You are confusing insight with conjecture.

It’s obvious your post is based heavily on opinion but it’s nothing of interest if I’m honest. Sorry.

Or maybe he's got so much self-belief that he thinks, ultimately, given time, he'll show himself more worthy of a start than the competition.

You want to believe De Jong is coming. I understand that. I'd like him to sign too and I'll be relieved if he does.

I just think people are getting themselves so far down the rabbit hole with this attempt to buy De Jong that they're not considering it might not work out. I can see various reasons why he might stay at Barcelona.

I don’t mind. If he comes great if not life goes on.

On your first point, not at all.

On your second point, you've created a situation in your head and then got angry about it.

Pretty much this

I reckon there's a big possibility that this is what happens. Hopefully we're wrong and he signs for United before September.

If he wants to stay while barca bend him over then good luck to him, Move on there are other players out there that could work for us .

Why would Frenkie agree to a lower salary? He has a contract. He doesn’t need to agree to anything.

Why would Frenkie agree to a lower salary? He has a contract. He doesn’t need to agree to anything.

The same reason he agreed to it previously, Barca being in a position that they need salaries reduced.

Barca's stance is quite clear, they cannot afford the current salary, if FDJ is desperate to stay he needs to show it by reducing his salary or leave.

Why?

We offered Barca the money, one must assume FdJ said he may join us. We have done nothing more since that point, some of you people really need help in your lives if you are going to think we are embarrassed by bidding for a player we want. If FdJ had turned around like Timber and said no thanks, then this would have been over. If FdJ is that much of a pushover he would rather lose 40-50m and be told he will be a third choice CB because he loves the club, and he and his gf love the lifestyle then its not a footballing decision really. Its a "I don't want to leave my dream club, even if I have to play only in unimportant games and say goodbye to any money I should have earned", which to some point I respect if you love the club that much even if they show you no love in return.
Why? Because apparently we have made a bid I don't know how long ago, the player has said several times he doesn't want to leave, and whilst this may all be a smokescreen for him getting them to pay him what they owe him, at the end of the day, if it isn't and he doesn't join us, we have been pursuing a player who has been unlikely to say yes to us from the start in favour of going after more likely options to strengthen an area we all know is our weak spot. If it is nothing more than a fight about monies owed and he does join us (haven't there been quotes that he'd prefer Chelsea too though?) then, ok, it was worth it and we knew all along what we were doing. I am not convinced though.

If he doesn't join, how pathetic do we look?

without Barca's apparent financial problems, we would never have stood a chance of signing him in the first place, so i don't see why we would look pathetic if he decides to stay. it's a bonus really if we land him. why would you leave a Barca team who have a legitimate shot at the title with Lewa now on board, for us, who will finish 3rd or 4th at best?

I mean there definitely is a point as we are in a position that we should not be in, where because of the incompetence of the people in charge at the club our best option is continuing to chase a midfielder who it is very questionable if he even wants to be here and whose contact situation is beyond a mess. Yes i think it's our best option now, but that doesn't excuse the incompetence of getting to this point.
I agree with your post and the post before as well. The clubs recruitment seemingly didn't cut the corner fully. Hopefully they will.

I find a lot to agree with in this.

I don't think trying to buy a player that you want is ever a bad thing. Even if the player turns you down to go elsewhere. We tried to buy Ronaldinho once. He ended up choosing Barcelona. It wasn't a bad idea to try to go for Ronaldinho. Sometimes you go for a player and it doesn't work out. That's life.

I dunno how many people on this forum have ever tried to hire someone for a job. Sometimes you want someone and they choose not to accept the offer, for various reasons. Whether we like it or not, cos we're emotionally invested in Man Utd, for a lot of players football is a job. When people move job they tend to consider a range of factors, they talk it over with their families, the people close to them. Sometimes you find someone who you think: 'Wow, they'd be a fantastic fit.' It just doesn't come off for some reason.

For me the big failing if we don't sign De Jong is not trying to sign him, its in not having a suitable alternative identified. That, I think, is an issue of planning that Arnold and Murtough should be held responsible for.
At this point, I think ETH should be held responsible as well (if the worst case scenario kicks in), because he, along with all the others was seemingly fine, with putting all eggs in one basket.

Not really.

Yeah, you're right. But that wouldn't be the thing that fans would get angry about. It would be about having a strategy without an emergency exit. Which isn't connected to being lucky, fate or coincidence, it is just plain and simple preparation. But seemingly, before ETH came in, there wasn't a big level of transfer window preparations done. At least thats the only way I can plausibly explain to myself that all of our targets have a connection with ETH.

That in itself isn't even an issue, I like the players we brought in, but I was hopeful, that we would share the vision of the squad on more shoulders than just the managers. And I am a bit discouraged that this is the case.

If FdJ chooses to stay at Barca with a paycut then no shame on United. As long as we don't leave ourselves with 1 week to find an alternative.

He hasn’t outright said in public he doesn’t want to come, it’s all press conjecture. You’d still hope we’re getting positive signals behind the scenes to be hanging around this long.
There have been both positive and negative stories as to whether he would join Chelsea which is why most see it for the BS it is. A lot of the noise around this transfer is Spanish driven flip flopping drivel.

I find it utterly incomprehensible that somehow ten Hag has not been in constant communication with Frenkie, personally, and been given assurances of interest direct from the horsechoker's mouth. Chasing a player unto the end of the window with scant personal interest communicated on a personal level, would be lunacy, so, I can only surmise that what is spoken privately is at odds with certain public utterances from various media sources.

Think it’s just one of those games of who blinks first. I think it’ll drag until deadline day. No interest will end on our part until then either.

Can we move on now? If the lad loves Barca so much he's willing to rip up his own contract to stay there, obviously all power to him and I wish him the best. It'd be great if more players had that kind of loyalty.

So who are we after then?

I reckon there's a big possibility that this is what happens. Hopefully we're wrong and he signs for United before September.
I've been saying for a month that if I were Barcelona, I'd do the deal after La Liga confirm their ability to spend is back to 1:1, so they can make full use of the amount they will write on the book in accounting terms. I wouldn't be surprised if they book full value of the deal, even if it is paid in tranches, which they will instead count upfront to max out.

On his wages, I assume there is a number which is understood to make the deal and Barcelona are waiting until it is no longer possible to keep it secret that they paid him a compensation to leave (maybe dress it as a loyalty bonus).

And we are just waiting for the dominoes to fall. There is always a chance Barcelona are too cheap to reach that number and FDJ stays but I think that's the overwhelmingly not the most likely outcome.

Yeah why would you. I can see where you are coming from, but seeing that midfield is one of the main issues since quite some time, even worsened by a few players leaving after the end of last season, it isn't a great outlook to only try to bring in a "bonus signing", wouldn't you agree? Its like if you have only 3 wheels for your car and you have a hard on for the greatest set of tyres of all time, risking to stay emptyhanded with only 3 wheels...

Despite EtH quotes and the lack of linked players, I'd be more than astounded if we don't have a plan B. There is just no fecking way.

But would you mind playing out of position or warm the bench if you were getting back your 17million quid? Hell, I would take it up the (lubed) arse for 17million quid.

That seems like the big holdup - Barca won't pay him the money and are now openly asking him to take a pay cut as well.

The same reason he agreed to it previously, Barca being in a position that they need salaries reduced.

No he doesn't. I keep reading that here but let's get one thing clear: Frenkie doesn't need to do anything. If he does nothing, then by the end of this transferwindow he will still be a FC Barcelona player and he will still get paid.
The only thing Barca can do is completely freeze him out of the team. They can't sell him without his approval.

Cristiano allegedly told Fergie he would return in 2013 right before signing a new contract with Real

Maybe too much is made of ex player/ex manager releationships?

It is Barcelona that would be most terrified if FDJ shows willingness to stay with reduced salary. I predict he will join United with Barcelona paying around 12m of deferred wages.

@NZT-One the reason I would excuse Ten Hag is because in the modern game its rare for the Head Coach to have that level of control over transfers.

It will be United's failing to bring him in and let him have free reign over our transfers.

I think back to Liverpool talking Klopp into signing Salah over Brandt. A modern recruitment set up should be able to identify a range of players of similar profiles and if you can't get A, allow you to move on to B, C, D or E.

@Berbaclass is closing in on 2000 posts

Does anyone know the record for most posts in one thread? Or second most, if Barba has already smashed it.

@Brownie85 is also well above 1000 now and @Plant0x84 isn't far off 1000 either so they could break records too.
