Given that Barcelona is De Jong's dream club, and he doesn't really want to leave, if Barcelona are serious that he can stay if he takes a pay cut I can see him doing it. Lets be honest, once you're a millionaire, does it matter if you're getting paid £150k a week or twice that?

Absolutely, football is a very short career. Signing away his entire prime now for well under the going rate would be nuts.

Over his entire Barca time in that case he’ll earn pre-tax, around 40mil. Tax rate is around 52% so for his entire prime 6 year deal (including the two previous low earning years) he’d be earning less than 20m after tax.
With cars, multiple houses in Spain and Holland likely worth in the millions, and a lavish living, that really is fecking yourself.

Ah... so SPORT is reliable now? I very much doubt anything is going to change, if it's going to change at all, during Barcelona's tour. And they are still almost two weeks out.
Maybe I am misreading your post but they don't have 2 weeks left in USA (if that's what you meant)

Their last proper tour game is the Saturday night (or Sunday morning technically) coming. Then they have another friendly at Nou Camp the following week. So this time next week, they should be back in Spain

I wanted de Jong
Which started the whole world laughing
Oh, if I'd only seen
That de Jong isn't coming
And they offered Depay
Which started the whole Caf crying
Because we'd already seen
That the bloke was appalling

If you've been around rich people then you'll know that they ALWAYS aim to get richer not poorer. You wouldn't see Musk happily throw away millions just because he's a billionaire. Frenkie is entering his prime and about to marry so I doubt he'd be willing to throw away money at this stage maybe if he was in his 30s like Bale
Dembele is a poor example because nobody wanted to buy him even as a free agent so he had no choice. Frenkie has a ready and willing buyer willing to pay what he's worth so not exactly the same optics

Barcelona didn't really need to renew Dembele's contract even if he had nowhere else to go. Also, if De Jong changes the terms of his deal with Barca to stay he'll just be doing what Umtiti and Pique and others have already done. Its not unprecedented within the dressing room.

Depends on what's important to you and how else you make it up doesn't it? Its not like his wage from Barcelona is his sole source of income.

Its known that De Jong has loved Barcelona his whole life, his family used to holiday there, his girlfriend loves the city as does he. If you want to be in a place, and you live pretty comfortably, then what's the difference?

Everything De Jong is 'losing' he's losing on paper. He hasn't been paid the original value of his deal at any point. So, in reality, while he wouldn't be getting what he originally thought. The wage he's been living on won't change drastically.

I think people want to believe this will happen and so are finding reasons why it might. I would like to believe it will happen. De Jong would instantly take our midfield up a few levels. It would actually be shocking to see how much he would improve us. We've gotten so used to the standard of midfield play we've had for the past few years, we've forgotten what is like to have someone who can really pull the strings from dep.

I just see the other side of the coin. De Jong loves Barcelona, he's literally living his dream, his actual take home pay won't change all that much if he agrees to what is, in reality, a nominal pay cut. Lots of other Barca players have done it, so he won't be the only one. If Barcelona are serious about giving him that option I can see him taking it.

uh oh, story on Dutch media just dropped that Frenkie might accept a lower salary to stay at Barca after all :nervous:

(this is a crappy source)

"Frenkie de Jong makes 180 turn: Salary reduction viable option"

I honestly now think this is how the saga will end, sadly. He will probably hope to eventually earn himself a spot in the midfield.

It's not the same, though. Dembele was a free agent and similar to Pogba, there was little market for him. His alternative to signing on with Barca for reduced wages was signing for no one
I know it’s not the same, but the second point of my initial post is what I’m more talking about. They literally had fans booing the guy up until March of this season and he ends up re-signing. There’s something in the water at that club, is what I’m saying

What's the difference between what Frenkie and Kessie offer in midfield? Someone break it down for me? Both good players.

So he is happy to forgoe his deferred wages, half his pay and play CB, even though they are trying to sign Kounde? I call BS  Either that, or the guy is a moron.

Living his dream on the bench as a back up CB..

If that’s the case both he and his weak, loser like mentality can remain in sunny Spain.
