I agree, and in fact I don’t think you’ve gone far enough. If a club tells a player they won’t play for the remainder of their contract, then as I understand it that player then has the right to buy himself out, meaning he gets his move anyway, and the club get no fee. Might be getting that a bit wrong, but I’m sure there is a law to that effect.

That might be true but i'm not 100% sure about that. Would be interesting to see it happen.

Where though? Even the Barca fans see no place for him…

Xavi has said at CB but he won’t start there either.

If they had any desire to keep him he’d of started pre season in his new position to bed in.

They simply don’t want him, have planned without him and are forcing him out.
This is the truth, I think. The simple explanation is usually the correct one.

The problem is Murtough is in charge now, say even if he gets replaced halfway through this season, the new DOF is going to have to come in and start from scratch rebuilding the footballing structure at the club if Murtough has failed to do this.

One of the main things the supporters of Murtough say is that he has only really been a proper DOF since Woodward left, before that he was only DOF by name alone(which for me raises all kinds of questions regarding his competency for the job). But anyway IF its true that Murtough has only really been doing the job 6 months, and that isn't enough time to get the recruitment structure in place which is why we are so heavily manager lead recruitment this summer. Now obviously we have no idea how much this is true and how much is speculation/ wishful thinking, but surely a new DOF would require the same time at least as people are saying Murtough needs.

So if Murtough isn't the right man for the job, then it will be at the very very earliest around the summer of 2024 and god knows how many millions spent before we even start to see the impact of a different DOF and that's if they were employed this season. So personally I would say that is very much up a certain brown alley if Murtough doesn't come through.
Said it at the start of this window, this particular one would be playing catch-up a little because entirely new structure in place, 2 head scouts were let go, any analysis done would have been done for the old manager with a different need from the incoming manager

There's no way he's taking a pay cut. If he's staying, he's staying on his current deal
This is the funny thing. It's made out he either has to take a pay cut or leave. He doesn't need to do any. Just stay on his contract

is there a Salah here over a De Jong though? I’d argue the Salah signing is a once in a lifetime thing.

When it comes to doing the things Ten Hag wants his connecting player to do, there's nobody we could try to go for that's De Jong's equal. However, there are other players out there who are better at it than say Fred. I don't understand why our approach seems to be De Jong or nobody. The recruitment team should be able to say to Ten Hag: 'If we don't get De Jong here are four or five controlling midfielders, better than the ones we have, that you might want to consider.' We know for a fact that when Overmars was recruiting for Ten Hag he didn't rely solely on the latter's judgement over players. Why is Murtough, and the structure beneath him, seemingly incapable of looking around world football and finding alternatives to De Jong?

Yeah makes sense. I totally agree, I wouldn't want ETH to be such a factor anyway but he is the one who will face the consequences if no midfield reinforcement comes in and I would expect him to really really really make a fuzz internally about the prospect of this. Murtough and Arnold aren't experienced players in that game and they may need a little more directions. I am a bit scared of a scenario, that we will end without FDJ, buying some 18 y/o CM talent and accept the status quo. After all, it can be said that we did all we could, it wasn't us who led to the failure and that we really tried to give the manager exactly what he wanted. All those are somewhat plausible explanations to reduce accountability.

Well after we missed out on Ronaldinho we did sign a teenaged Cristiano Ronaldo so its worked for us before! On a serious note though, I actually think if we miss out on De Jong we won't sign anyone. Which I find a bit strange.

It's more a case of him being desperate not to join us as he sees us as a bit of a joke, rather than him being desperate to stay at Barca and play CB IMO. If City, PSG or Bayern came in for him I reckon they'd get a deal done for him pretty quickly.

We just don't have the pull anymore, and we need to get our scouting department sorted out so that we can start pursuing shrewder targets and begin slowly rebuilding our reputation.
How on earth have you reached that conclusion?

This is the truth, I think. The simple explanation is usually the correct one.
I'd agree with that, they're offering him terms that they know he must surely reject so they can say "OK if you can't agree, then you'll have to leave the club".

If he does agree to them, well, who knows what's happening then as it'll like mess up their plans for the rest of the window

I suppose it all comes down to how much he wants to stay. That's not something we really know (most of the reporting has suggested that his first preference is to stay, but if Barca insist he must leave, he is open to joining Ten Hag at United).

Anyone else concerned we haven't agreed a fee for a few days? Been reported every 3 days since this saga started.

This a good enough reason to jump off the muppet train?

He will start. If Frenkie will conform to Barcelona's wage structure and is there for the coming years, he will start. They are pestering him because he hasn't yet.

He was one of the best players under Xavi.

Play where though?

Busquets, Pedri and Gavi will be the first choice midfield
Pique and the young lad they had a hard time trying to convince to sign a new contract will be the first choice CB's
On top of all of that they've just signed Kessie (CM) and Christensen (CB) and are trying to sign Kounde and Azpilicueta (both defenders)

Already some of those new signings are going be on the bench most weeks

I presume you have hard evidence that this is the case?

If he stays, I cannot wait to see his YouTube compilation ‘’Frenkie de Jong - Fantastico Centre Back - Barcelona 2022/2023’’

He's got a legally binding contract. He can stay as long as that contract runs.

The option is for him to either leave Barcelona or see out the terms of his contract.

Don't follow Barca but reading from those who do and have good contacts there, he was far from a guaranteed starter last season and a lot of his performances were poor. And was subbed a fair few times.

They now have Kessie too. As well as Pedri and Gavi being a year older and more established. So his chances will be lesser.

I can't see him staying at Barca another year from now. He'll go somewhere even if it isn't United.

In truth, there haven't really been any major developments since the outline of the deal was agreed between the two clubs a month ago (add-ons were reportedly finalised two weeks ago).

Everything else has been a game of chicken between De Jong and Barca. It looks like they are now pressurising him to decide between either remaining at Barca on 60% of pay or moving to United (together with an as yet undetermined portion of the deferred €17m wages).

I think de Jong and his agent tried to use Man Utd's interest to strong arm Barcelona into paying the deferred wages that are owed. Unfortunately for him Barcelona would rather sell and he does not want to leave, so I think he will accept the pay cut and the ongoing deferred wages in order to stay. He is desperate to stay there. What a sad, little life.
He ruined my summer completely so he could have the money and I hope now he can spend it on lessons in grace and decorum.

He will start even if he won't take a pay cut. Once the window closes, no clubs going to stick their highest earner on the bench out of spite. It's moronic. Once the season starts, then it's just the footballing business that matters.

Come on mate ^^ of course there isn't hard evidence. But that applies to the other side of the coin as well. There isn't any hard evidence that there are plan Bs. At a point, where there are absolutely no reasons to be secretive about it.

Or take a 40% paycut. It might not seem palatable to you or I, but that is what Barca are asking him to do, if he remains. The choice is his.

they've agreed to a fee to sell him, he's clearly not seen as a vital part of their future
It is by far best business for them to sell him because they have replacement for him in place.

If they don't, and he agrees to a paycut where he will still be one of their highest paid players, I think there is no way he will be a squad player. Gavi isn't better as of yet and wasnt starting over him in the majority of the games. If Frenkie commits to Barcelona they'll use him, as of now he hasn't.

I think in those lines as well, but they will try and pester him for as long as the window is open and we are interested I'd say.

Just today we have fresh links to SMS as a Frenkie alternative. Crap source but it’s still noise about our midfield. The club are working, we should let them work and trust that they are better informed than we are.

If he stays and waves goodbye to 26 million then I wouldn't have wanted him here anway.

It just shows he doesn't want to leave his comfort zone and surely he doesn't want to be here.

Accepting a 50% paycut sounds mental, but if he accepts it then good luck to him.
