Frenkie De Jong - Part 3?

If Barcelona are so desperate to get rid of his wages then the only way I’d accept this signing was if we agreed a loan w/ mandatory purchase in it. No loan fee & we cover his wages.

They get his wages off their books and we get the player ETH wanted without eating in to this year’s FFP budget…

…but it’ll never happen.

Man Utd have agreed to pay €90m (£77m) for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong in the summer transfer window, according to reports.

There are set to be some major changes at Old Trafford over the next few months after Sir Jim Ratcliffe completed a deal to buy 27.7 per cent of the Premier League club earlier this month.

When are we going to buy De Jong? How many times are we going to miss out on this amazing player?

Why is it that we never learn from the Haaland and Bellingham deals? Sometimes you just have to go for it.

I saw him meeting Flick and he seemed to be one of the first, a bit too eager. I really don't think he has the appetite to leave Barca.

Very generous to compare not signing De Jong to not signing Haaland and Bellingham.

Very good midfielder but lets be honest, he has not set the world alight. Overpaid player who will have little to 0 motivation at United.

We need to stop buying players that are on big wages with nothing to prove.

When will we learn? FDJ is on Euro 720K p/w and we want to sign him?

We already have problem to offload players with high wages like Sancho, Casemeiro, Antony.

I don't think you ever need to worry about FDJ signing for United, mate.

Honestly some of the takes on this website genuinely mystify me sometimes. This is up there.

We're not still going on about this donkey are we? Jeeez...we needed to have moved on from him about 3 seasons ago.

Gutted for him, but the right choice.

Confirmed to miss the Euros now :(

Thank god we didn't sign him. His ankle injury is becoming a problem now and he is playing in a less demanding league.

Wonder if it's a blessing in disguise for the Dutch? Feels like they relied way too much on him to make the team tick and though I absolutely rate him - he never seemed to be the type to take that team to another level -on his own anyway.

Not a blessing at all. He is too good that missing him will be any sort of blessing in any situation. A fit and in form Frenkie walks into any team. He is a unique player and cant really be replaced. I see some England fans call for Mainoo as a starter for England because he has that ability to carry the ball forward. Frenkie makes Mainoo his ball carrying ability look average. Frenkie is just that good at that aspect.

Koopmeiners might also have injured himself during the warm up and could miss the Euros. Two quality midfielders with experience in good leagues will be missing. Wijnaldum might even become a starter now....

He's one of their star players. His ability can't be easily replaced. They will miss him, especially against the bigger nations that play at a higher tempo and dominate large parts of a game.

This guy is going to be the Sneijder for a new generation of United fans

Because of wages he deferred in covid

Thanks for clarification. IMO, we shouldn't be looking at someone who has no intention to be here and also another ETH's recommendation.

If the new Ineos Team is the one making the calls it will be different story altogether.

Have we not been embarrassed enough here already?

He doesn't want to come. He wants to stay at Barcelona.

A big part of the problem we've had over the years is paying obscene transfer fees and wages for players who don't really want to be here e.g. Di Maria.

Let him stay at Barcelona like he wants, and let's find someone who actually wants to join us.

Has he ever done anything that amazing?

Seems like an overhyped player still riding on his potential as a young player.

Verrati 2.0

Avoid. Mainoo means we dont need De Jong.

He isn't even that good anymore, I don't think any big team is interested in him anymore besides us (in the cafe at least).

When was the last time you saw De Jong impacting a big game? He doesn't score nor assist much I know his role is more about controlling and recycling but still every time I've watched barca he doesn't seem to do anything impactful.

He certainly hasn't lived up to the expectations of his younger self from Ajax. Just like de Ligt that champions league run with Ajax made many of us believe they were meant to be world class but they haven't been able to reach those levels again.

For the fee and the wages it's a clear no, he's 27 so not really young anymore to think he'll significantly improve. There are plenty more promising players we could get for the money it would take to bring him.

Also the fact he rejected us makes me believe he'd only come here for the money' and we all know how that would turn up.

This ship has sailed. Time to get him was 2 summers ago and he didn't want it. Move on
