Frenkie De Jong - Part 3?

What is relevant though is he doesn't want to join us.

The way I would put it instead is Barca are his dream club, and he doesn't want to leave. But if he does, we are definitely an option. So his career ambition isn't "I don't want to go to United", it's "Barca are my club, I don't want to go anywhere else". If he ever decides to leave, and/or accepts that the club wants him to go, then we have a decent chance to get him.

FDJ Mainoo Mount midfield would need a completely different setup. That is a slow and weak midfield for the PL but highly technical. They could probably play through any press but would struggle against counter attacks.

Not sure any manager could just do a 180 and go from transitions to possession just like that.

I would welcome this as I'm sick of being outplayed by relegation teams.

If INEOS ask for it then ETH will have to go with it, that's if he still wants to be in a job.

Every possession team relies on transitions, and ETH's real philosophy also includes both. City, Arsenal, Liverpool, etc. all of them. It's not one or the other, like you imply.

I believe its far simpler than that to be honest , he doesn't want to lose the back wages he deferred by adjusting it into his last contract extention as a favour to Barca during Covid , any move for him is non starter unless Barca sort that out which they seem reluctant to do .

I think that plays a huge part as well.

That midfield doesn't make sense, they are all trying to occupy similar spaces and none are anchoring.

Please no. Keep the player who wants to be here, not bring in a player who doesn’t want to fecking come. And this is Bruno Fernandes, one of the best playmakers in Europe. I’m so glad he plays for us every week

No thanks. I've got no issue with selling Bruno, but I don't want De Jong. We should be avoiding this type of profile. Instead, look to sign young hungry players who are on the cusp of becoming quality. Hopefully less wages and ego.

Brought to you by the same guys that broke the stories of Tchouameni to Liverpool, Kante to Liverpool, Firmino to Real Madrid, Hazard to Newcastle, Jordi Alba to Napoli, Dalot to Real Madrid, Griezmann to United etc etc

I'd believe the Daily Star before Nacional.
I’d believe my cat before I took that tweet seriously

He’s going to be our priority this Summer as ETH clearly still rates him very highly and seems to need him to play the football he wants to play. With the new structure in place hopefully they will be more capable of delivering the manager what he needs and will bring FDJ here.

Barca also need money so could see a £100m deal being agreed eventually, with us paying off the rest of what Barca owe him (which made the deal collapse last time).

Point being there's more to signing a player than quality.

Like, do they want to play for you? Are they just after a massive payday?
That's the big question with him, is he actually keen to play here at all? I don't know if either Case or Di Maria came just for the payday, Case we got a bit late in his career and Di Maria was a great player but obviously the robbery and then fall out with LVG killed his time here.

For what it's worth I don't think he's fussed about us and would rather we looked to younger players coming through, if ETH is staying on here (which to me seems highly doubtful) there should be more of an onus on him to coach younger players in the age range of Garnacho, Hojlund, Mainoo etc. as we look to build for the future a bit more than just going for the big expensive signings.

That said, if the rumour is true and we can swap Bruno for him (and Bruno wants to leave), it would make sense for how he plays, FFP and also their ages.

If this is the plan for the supposed major squad overhaul that ETH will be allowed to oversee, then surely even his most ardent supporters will finally have alarm bells ringing. This has got Di Maria vibes all over it.

INEOS wouldn't waste the entire budget on one player. That's the opposite of what they want to achieve. Big money signings like this should be a thing of the past.

They'd be looking at up and coming midfielders and cheaper alternatives. Caqueret at Lyon, for example.

I'm pretty sure that both FdJ and his partner enjoy living in Barcelona anyway.

I doubt INEOS want to get involved in anorher potential saga like this.

Stop with your depressing ten Hag is staying agenda.

In the unlikely event ETH is still here there is no way he will be deciding which players we bring in, a structure is being built to stop that from continuing to happen. He’s also going to be on the verge of the sack so spending huge fees and wages on more players he wants just won’t be an option.

Getting rid of a high earner like Varane and then bringing in someone who would earn even more when you are trying to make cutbacks is also a non starter.

Somebody post the photo of Bruno blasting the ball at him!

De Jong is injured quite often.

No he is not - before this season he missed 21 league matches since joining Barcelona in 2019 - and 4 of those were through suspensions. So before this - he missed an average of roughly 4 games a season

This season alone he missed 20 games due to ankle problems.

People turning up their noses at De Jong. :wenger:
Who ?
Maybe its another case of wasting time chasing a player who has little to no interest in joining us...again.

BTW, I think everyone here clearly rates him as a good/ very good player.

He missed 120 days this season which is the season that matters.

Yes - but 4 seasons in a row he barely missed a game. So injured a lot seemed a bit of a stretch

I get what you're trying to say, but the current season his ankle injuries are quite worrisome.

You could say the same of Mount before last season

I would hope that future contracts and signings are heavily incentivised on performance with a lower basic wage. It would hopefully be the start of a new era of players actually playing for the shirt instead of their pockets.

Can’t believe that this BS is still doing the rounds.

He doesn’t want to leave Barca and doesn’t want to join us. Never has. This is just noise.

Where would he even play in the midfield set up Ten Hag has played this season?

DM would be the obvious answer but De Jong is a guy who is pretty poor defensively and has needed cover around him to cope, Christensen has played as a shield for much of the season for Barca.

Basically Mainoo is playing his role so we don't need him anymore. What we need more are the players that play E.Alvarez' and Tagliafico's roles.
