Final - Germany vs. Argentina

Cheers for the link but I know what a straw man argument is already. Why should Higuaín back away just because he sees Neuer coming? He goes to win the ball, Neuer gets there first but still fouls him. You'd have to be a bit simple to think otherwise.

Well, if Neuer gets to the ball first (which he did), he doesn't foul him

Schweini, Muller, Lahm if you were to pick from Germany, and Robben had a better WC than Messi

The germans won the WC, so that's enough medals for them, while Robben did not get to the final.

Well let's be honest it was a consolation price for Messi and Argentina and not really a reflection of who was the best player at this tournament.

Honestly I've read here that he created the most chances and had the most succesful dribbles at the tournament. And he was being double teamed all the time, and plenty of times even triple-teamed.
So honestly I do believe that he deserved the award.

He was one of the best player in the group games but hasn't done much since as Argentina progress in the knockout stage. He did have a good first half in the final but wasn't even MOTM in the end. He loss to Germany.

Robben and Rodriguez were a level above throughout the tournament, whereas Muller, Schweinsteiger and Lahm are the other top performers who deserve it more as they perform in the equally high standard and did come out as eventual winner.

Neuer, what a player. Muller, what a player and Schweinsteiger, what a player. I've never liked Germany despite some family connections, but this time I was rooting for Germany once Holland were eliminated. They've played some good football.

Deserved win for germany in the end I thought. They looked the better team, while Argentina felt like they were relying on someone to do something either on the break of a bit of individual brilliance.

Class!

What is so class in this?? Every player who played (irrespective of any country) shakes hand after the game. Not only this WC, but even in club matches. You could take such photos at the end of game of even players like Suarez or Song or Luiz and they would look equally class.

Man Argentina choked.. No other word to put it.. This will hurt a lot for many years to come..

I experienced something similar in 2010.. You'll only forget it in first match of 2018

That's okay, I have no problem with a goalkeeper protecting himself, but we are not talking about mistakes here, we are talking about rules. And there is a rule in football, that if you run over a striker in the penalty box without clearly getting the ball, you will be punished with a penalty. It's as simple as that.....but don't get me wrong, all in all the Germans have deserved that victory, it's just a little "Schönheitsfehler".

He got the ball, didn't he?

I don't know what caused this originally, but Schweinsteiger doesn't usually give post match interviews or any interview except to the Bayern owned Bayern TV. There are exceptions, like winning the world cup, obviously. :)

But yeah, he's pissed at the media for writing shit about him constantly.

Yeah, because that's what would've happened...

I don't give a damn about this "that's what keepers are taught to do" BS. If a defender comes charging into the side of an attacker, leading with his knee, at jaw height, and completely fcuking lays him out it's a stonewall foul every day of the week.

Suicide, stupidity, foolish bravery. Those are the proper words for it. Higuain was so late to the party that I'd even argue he shouldn't have been there and when he gets there, he should dance to the music as it is. He never had a chance of getting to the ball. He should not have engaged. It's his own problem. You KNOW a GK is not going to flinch back. You KNOW it's Manuel Neuer. Do not engage unless you love pain. And for all the mistakes the ref may have made, that was a good decision. You don't get a foul just because you had the most pain.

Not giving the penalty was a good decision, it was never a foul by Higuain though. That was just stupid.

Personally I love how Neuer works his image. Pretty much every Argentine attacker shit their pants infront of him, that's something you have to earn as a keeper and very few in the history of the game did. I don't get the outrage, it wasn't reckless or anything. Pretty much every sane attacker stays away when he doesn't have a chance to get the ball against a goalkeeper, especially against someone like Neuer, just like Klose stayed away when Romero came out with his knee first. I would understand the outrage if Neuer totally mistimed it, no chance to get the ball like Schumacher back in '82. That clearly wasn't the case here though. I think Higuain was a bit unlucky, I'm not sure he expected Neuer to go for the ball that wide. It wasn't anyone's fault in my opinion, just two players colliding really hard. Happens in the game.

Just to confirm, was it wrong that when I saw Aguero looking devastated at the end that a bit of me laughed inside?

Only I really do hate that prick.

because he scored the winner to win the league? Why is he a prick?

Dunno about wrong but I think he's pretty likeable. Then again I'm not a Man Utd fan...

schadenfreude rising from THAT goal. I felt it a bit too, actually.
i find it kinda childish actually. Not saying you should love him but to hate a player because he scored a winning goal is it a bit silly.

Personally I don't hate him per se, but constant mention of QPR whenever he's around, AGUERRRROOOOOOOOO, etc. all eventually build up to relishing his sadness when he lost a WC final.

I also can't blame United fans for hating him, sure, Aguero only did his job but at the cost of millions of United fans who saw their title taken away at the last minute.

Silly? Perhaps. But I hate Balotelli for scoring against Germany the way he did in 2012. It's not rational, but then... football is not meant to be rational, is it. :)

Rational fans won't 'hate' Aguero because he scored a goal that won them the league. He also isn't a remotely dislikable player like Suarez. Obviously it hurt when that goal went I'm but it was nothing personal. We really shouldn't have lost against Wigan which was when we lost the league imo.

I'm glad Germany won in the end. Deserved winners to me. I wonder if Germany can go on and win the euros 2016? They certainly have the team to do so.

Euros will be exciting. After this tournament we will go in as the big favorite, but i think especially France will be up there too. They played an amazing world cup with a very young squad. In 2 years tehy will be even better and they play at home. Belgium the same (not at home though). And then there are always the likes of Spain and Italy.

Yes, he did, but the way he went after Higuain was still everything but gentleman-like and should have been sanctioned.....32 years ago, a certain Toni Schumacher got crucified for a similarly reckless attack. Since he didn't hurt Higuain, Neuer surely wouldn't have deserved the same pariah-treatment, a penalty for Argentina would have been (more than) enough of a punishment from my point of view.

??? Schumacher was never close to the ball ffs. Neuer didn't mistime his punch, he went for a ball that was clearly within his range and made a clearance while an attacker went through despite not having a chance to get it. How is that comparable? If we forbid goalkeepers to go for the ball in the penalty box because the attacker might run into them, the whole thing of being allowed to use their hands becomes a bit pointless.

I'm afraid if Higuain ends up in a wheelchair, he probably won't give a hoot whether Neuer was going after the ball or not.....what you guys just don't seem to understand: "To get the ball" itself is not an acquittal per se in football, even if you get the ball, but recklessly endanger the health of your opponent, then you should get a punishment for that. And since I believe that it was rather a clumsy than an intentional thing, it should simply have been a penalty for Argentina and no red card...

Aguero actually comes across as a pretty decent guy, it's a bit stupid to hate him for scoring a goal..as a striker.

I still don't see the difference to Romero going for the ball and Klose backing down though? It's not the goalkeeper's fault, if the attacker doesn't back down, when he doesn't have a chance to get it? If we're arguing in general, then I agree, that goalkeepers shouldn't get away with as much as they do. I just think it's plain wrong to point at Neuer here, who did what pretty much all the goalkeepers do when they go for the ball, just because the attacker decided to take the risk. If it's accepted in general, then the attackers need to be more careful. If it's not accepted in general, then the goalkeepers need to be punished. You can't single out Neuer here and punish him for something that's regularly accepted.

I am the only one who thinks thatthe refree was a little bit on ARG side?

I think there's a lot of wishful thinking involved with your argument. So many people have said already that the GK is special in certain circumstances. Can you not see a scenario where it's possible that the attacker simply had no place to be there? He knew Neuer was coming out, he knew Neuer never flinches. What did he expect to happen? I'm all for protecting players, but you can't protect someone from running against a concrete wall, either. It's his choice.

I think the comparison to Schumacher is pretty ridiculous. Maybe you should watch both scenens on youtube before you say such things.
And to the Neuer thing: Higuain clearly took a good look at Neuer, it was obvious that he couldn't get to the ball. Don't call Neuer the bad guy when the whole situation only occurs because Higuain is digging for a penalty.
