Final - Germany vs. Argentina

Really? The only match where there would be a reason for Argentina to waste time, i.e. the match agains Belgium, Argies were terribly time wasting since their early goal (about 8th minute).
Not that I was surprised by that or wanted to blame them. Just a correction about facts.
Well, we didnt watch the same game then.

None taken. Still a strange comment from someone living in Saxony where the radical right wing is a much bigger problem, maybe a bit religious believe would help? ;)

Also, I'm pretty sure @kouroux knows about our regional structure in Germany and didn't really expect a geography lesson (one that's actually wrong, federal states aren't countries), when he made that country in a country comment  .

 Thank you Balu for understanding me

Germany deserve to win, despite some iffy showings they have been the best team at Brazil 2014. However, if Messi turns it on and has one massive performance where he single handedly drags Argentina over the line I won't feel sorry. His whole career Messi has been told if he wants to be regarded as truly great he has to win Argentina the World Cup. In Brazil, the home of Argentina's fiercest football rival, in the best World Cup for a long time...the stars are aligning for Messi. Its up to him to step up now and write his own legend. Without him Argentina wouldn't have come this far, his goals got them through the group stages, his assist killed Switzerland...this can be Messi's World Cup if he can stop the Germans.

It's an interesting final. On the one hand I want Germany to win it and on the other hand I also wouldn't mind if Argentina won it for Messi's sake. It would put all these debates about GOAT to a rest.

Romero's obnoxious macho celebrations was enough to tip my support towards ze Germans. Cabello annoys me too, can't pinpoint why though, Messi also has a shit face and doesn't come across as a charitable bloke even if he doesn't take off his shirt to flex his muscles after scoring.

I just realize how much more important World Cup is than Champions League.

Its the dream of every soccer player, its the ultimate cup wathed by 2Billion People compared to 150mio Champions League.

I think it will be a close match with the Germans winning it, they are so deadly and with Müller they have an insanely good big game player in their team, better than Messi in this WorldCup IMO.

what ? no

Against Leverkusen a few years ago. And Leverkusen takes a beating from everyone in the cl.

And black_crow wrote : "for Bayern Munich and not for the national side". Leverkusen isn't included there.
Against Bayern and the national team Messi didnt show much. That is true. Yesterday he was very quiet also.
So, I'm very confident that Messi wont play a big role in the final.

he said "germany" and then stated bayern munich and not for the national side, conviniently forgetting that we beat germany 3-1 on August 15, 2012 at the "Commerzbank-Arena" of Frankfurt am Main wich is in germany

messi scored one goal

Germany have to be strong favourites for this one. Brazil were a shambles but Germany were still sensational. It was the first time we've seen a big nation play to their potential. Their passing in and around the box was immense, their professionalism was fantastic even when it was done and dusted, they don't rely on any one player and they have a much stronger bench than Argentina. Messi will need to improve massively if Argentina are going to have a chance, we saw last night how poor Argentina are when Messi doesn't show up, they'll really miss Di Maria.

Germany to win 2-0.

true. most players get the chance to win the world cup once, while the top clubs compete for the UCL every year. if you win the world cup for your country, you will be remembered forever. thats the ultimate stage, there you become a legend. i still know the scorers in every world cup final i have watched, while i dont know anymore who scored the goals in this years UCL final.

Oh, dont be that naive to think I said it just because your last stupid answer, its more because of your long history of them.

dont sweat it, mockney hates argentina and is a raviging "england uber allez" kind of weirdo

don't even make a bad comment about a english ref, because he will go bezerk and call you "cnut" and "idiot"

he's an english nazi

Yea thats why we see so many people cry, I never saw someone crying at champions League(expect few at finals), but in World Cup they cry even at first rounds

What I want is an obvious winner. No 0-0 and penalties. Not even a 0-1, goal scored against run of play and defend like mad sort of game. I want one of them to look like champions. Spain did it the Euros when they beat Italy - blew away any doubts.

So far only one team has shown that kind of form and maybe Germany peaked a few days too early by killing Brazil like that! But I don't see that it's impossible for Argentina to win well. Their attack is formidable, even if Di Maria doesn't recover, and their defending has been solid. Inevitably though, it's hard to visualise a great performance from them unless Messi turns in a great game as well.

Which I guess means I'm almost neutral, leaning towards Germany but will switch sides without any feelings of guilt. :smirk:

Anyway, I recon that Germany did a much better tournament, but Argentina was honest, we have what we have and try to optimize it. We didnt dive, lose time or foul, we play what we can play with the players we have.
Now, offcourse we have to play against a formidable team like the German, and they have al the chances to win, but at least we deserve the recognition that we are at the final because we struggled to be there with no external or unsportive help

Are you kidding? You're Argentina! Greece play what they can play with the players they have. You've got the greatest player of the last 20 years, maybe the best ever, AND you have Higuain, Lavezzi, Mascherano, Aguero, Mascherano, Zabaleta and Di Maria. You're not scraping for resources here, you could afford to leave Carlos Tevez at home.

oh come on. You cant compare a friendly to a world cup final, especially when germany played with 10 men after 30 minutes.
2006 and 2010 in games that counted for something, Messi was well covered by the german midfield and back then he was arguably in better form than now.

Is this is a joke, or do you genuinely believe this? Forgive me, my sarcasm detector's off. Is this the Uruguay defence?

Messi didn't even play in 2006 against Germany?

you're right.
But my point still stands. 2010 our defense worked well to take Messi out of the game. And currently we are back to a approach with solid defense. So, I'm certain that he will have a difficult game and not a game to shine.
Wouldn't you agree ?

I actually really like Sabello. He's got the most expressive face of any manager. He constantly looks like he's either going to cry or order a hit on you.

Conversely Low looks like an NME music critic who hasn't accepted he's not 35 anymore and his dreams of that breakthrough soft rock album are long gone.

Who in his right mind would consider Messi GOAT? Or maybe too young?

I think the original comment about Messi never being a problem for Germany or Bayern was plain stupid and factually wrong. No idea why marcosdeto thought it's worth replying to such nonsense though, better left ignored.

I don't expect us to change our gameplan to take Messi out of the game like the other teams did, so I'd say there's a chance that Messi will have a better game than he did against the Netherlands. But we're significantly stronger than any team Argentina faced so far and we should cause them way more problems in defense and in midfield, so I don't expect that it matters, at least I hope it won't. In 2010 we scored early through a set-piece, which allowed us to defend really deep and pick them out on the counter. The game on sunday will be different unless we again score early, which isn't easy against a so far solid looking Argentine defense.

How can everyone be supporting the Germans? Good to see, to be honest. Folk just want the most deserving team win the cup.

If he wins the World Cup, lots of people.

If Argentina wins it, it will be by its defensive discipline, Mascherano and a bit of luck. Messi would just be one great player for them, but saying he got this WC for them is ignorant at best. Ronaldo had made more solo goals and assists in his years in brazil and no one will call him GOAT

They wouldn't be doing it because of this WC. He's been on the precipice for years. This will just be what's needed to tip him over. He did basically drag them through the group stage, and was the only bright spark against Switzerland tbf.

I'm not saying it's necessarily right, but if he has a good final, I'd get used to it, cos it will be said a lot.

He has beaten so many records already and many deniers claim that he can't be GOAT as he never won a WC.

Well, if he wins a WC these deniers have no other arguments left and will have to concede that Messi indeed is the GOAT.

He will be GOAT not just because of winning a WC. He will be the GOAT because he has absolutely dominated world football with Barcelona for a good couple years and he still has some years in him to further solidify his claim.

Anyone denying that is just delusional.

you mean texas with religious radical right wing people ,didn´t you? its a better comparison
Fewer stereotypes, more football, please. And if you'd have paid as much attention in your history less ones as you apparently didn't in geography, you'd have known that Bayern and Sachsen have been quite closely connected for centuries.

Now, about the match: there is no such thing as "deserving a win". You score more goals in those 90 minutes, you earned the win. Past achievements aside.

The 7-1 is no indicator at all. Argentina can play a defensive game and this German side already struggled against such teams. The match might well become 1990 reloaded.

I can't deny he is one of the greatest players of all time. But I will compare him with another one that plays with him: I can't understand how Iniesta won't be considered overally better than him: Bigger brains, amazing passes, half the work was always done by him and Barcelona would crumble in his absence. Just because he ain't that exciting to watch (to me he is more than messi, to others maybe not) doesn't make him a worse player. He hasn't dominated solo with Barcelona. He has dominated with some of the best players of all time.

Also, Cristiano Ronaldo is more all-around than him (this is not the messi thread i can compare freely :D)

ok, then, you won one game against messi, that's a fabulous record and deserves everything you said before

cheers

in 2006 we played excellent in the group stages only to lose against germany -who were playing at home and didnt do nothing extraordinary at quarter finals- over penalty kicks after a game were we really played better

i don't remember the caf claiming that argentina loss was a travestite of footbal and that we were moral winners

if -and is a huge IF- we beat the germans, i have no doubt that most of the caftards will cry "injustice"

Do all South Americans have a massive chip on their shoulder? Or is it just you and Uruguay?

I thought that Argentina '06 side deserved to win the World Cup fwiw. Certainly more than that Germany side.

We should probably do it for him.
There's some background information about him (who is apparently travelling with Brazil for decades) floating around in german media, it's just an incredible story.

I reckon Messi won't be a big factor in the final

pffft, go fishing somewhere else, nazi

I barely see a post from you anymore than isn't moaning about some awful biased conspiratorial European attitude. I think you've become warped.

I swear you used to be a good poster once. Maybe I was just swayed by the Avatar. Damn shiny, shiny Avatars.

I have money riding on Germany, Brazil and Argentina to win the World Cup before the start of the tournament so whoever who wins, I'd still earn a decent amount of profit, albeit my bet on Germany was the highest. However strangely during the Holland vs Argentina match, I was supporting Holland. I just can't stand Argentina for some reason and I've been really impressed by how far Holland made it despite everyone writing them off before the start of the tournament that they won't even make it out of their group. Looking at this game, I can't see past a German win, they really should beat Argentina in regulation time but in a final, anything can happen and Argentina reminds me of the Spain 2010 WC winning team. They are winning all their matches by a single goal and they could score an early goal from a set-piece or a Messi free-kick and then defend. But I'm still going to keep my faith with the Germans, they have been the most impressive team by far and unlike Argentina, they are not a one-man team. They can score from anywhere. Another big positive factor why I'm so confident of a German win is that the bookmakers' odds are deadly accurate. Ever since the knock-out stage started, every favorites have won/qualified and yesterday I actually for once went against the trend by staking £4000 on Holland to qualify. Really regretted it as I initially wanted to go with Holland win/draw in regulation time but I was tempted by the odds of 2.2 over 1.55. The bookmakers have given a Germany win at 2.3 and and an Argentina win at 3.5 and Germany to win outright at 1.72 and Argentina at 2.2. Interestingly, this is the exact same odds which Argentina and Holland had except that Argentina was the favorites.

And for all those praising how great Argentina's defence is, wasn't Brazil defence pretty good too before they were found out by Germany? They only conceded 3 goals in all their matches which was pretty impressive. Said it again and again. To win a World Cup or any major tournament for that matter, you need depth. If you rely all your hopes on one or two key players, you will get found out. Just look at Brazil. Messi has been largely anonymous so far and now all of a sudden, he is going to turn up against Germany? I highly doubt so. This German team reminds me of Jupp Heynckes treble-winning Bayern Munich team. They are on a mission. So focused and determined. Even after leading 5-0 against Brazil at HT, you will expect them to let their guard down but they have obviously learnt from their mistakes in their 4-4 debacle against Sweden and still remained so well-disciplined and professional in the second half. After the match is over, they were still so respectful and classy with their celebrations. Germany's group was a lot tougher and they had to face France (which has been one of the most impressive teams) and the hosts whereas Argentina's only real test came against Holland, which they only won on a penalty shootout.

Argentina doesn't look good against any team that isn't afraid to go forward and attack heavily. And Germany is a lot stronger than ANY team Argentina has faced. Like I said before, this German team is on a mission. Germany has been the runner ups once, and third place twice in the last three World Cups. 24 years of hurt. This is the moment they have been waiting for. They wont let this slip away to a team like Argentina.

Just emptied all my money on a German World Cup win in an accumulator with United to make top four.
That's how confident I am with the Germans.
Germany will make history again by being the first European team to win in South America.
Auf geht Deuschland!
