Final - Germany vs. Argentina

the club is called "Bayer Leverkusen" not Bayern. its a club of a pharma company, Bayer.
Bayern is a country in germany.

For some reason i also call the pharma company Bayern, but thanks for telling me.

I barely see a post from you anymore than isn't moaning about some awful biased conspiratorial European attitude. I think you've become warped.

I swear you used to be a good poster once. Maybe I was just swayed by the Avatar. Damn shiny, shiny Avatars.

and since you won the "best poster" you became a condecending Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime that cant reply educately to nothing, you think you are the milk and that whatever you write is the bible

It's true, a lot speaks for Germany right now and make no mistake, they would definitely deserve it (less so for the performance in this tournament, but for showing a much more positive approach to football over the past decade), but my gut feeling tells me, that the Gauchos will snatch this one away from them on Sunday at the very last minute. Especially in the knock-out stage, the Argentinians have looked a lot like a team (Italy) the Germans usually don't like to play at all, by showing some absolutely magnificent defense skills (to mention here especially Mascherano and Garay, who have been the true, though unsung heroes of this Argentinian side so far!), 1 or 2 genius players going forward and their ability of "getting (or rather keeping) a result" when they really have to. I think Sabella has managed to make Argentina look much more solid and organised since the group stage as well as further strengthen the team spirit, so I would not be surprised at all, if they would safe their best game of the tournament for Sunday.

On the other hand, the Germans have probably peaked a few days too early on Tuesday. maybe Jogi Löw shoud have better told his players to leave it at 0:2....:smirk:

* anything.

Mate, you called me a Nazi. Twice. I'm not sure how to take or respond to anything after that.

It's national teams Mockney, people get passionate about them. To be fair you do tend to respond agressively when posters are critical of the England team and marcos becomes completely irrational when it comes to Argentina.

Oh I understand. I'm just not really sure where I've built up a rep as anti-Argentine. Or indeed remotely Nationalist in any other context.

Plus reading people's opinions aggressively when they aren't necessarily meant as such is a long standing problem on the internet.

I'm assuming it's probably crossed wires somewhere.

 Thought of you as a Nazi.. its quite funny.

I'm starting to hope this could turn out a great final. Argentina looked quite tight to me last night. Not adventurous or impressive - but quite tight. And capable of creating something when they did break free (which happened too rarely, obviously, but still).

I don't think they'll be easy to break down. Which means the Germans will have to make an effort. Which should mean an interesting game - at the very least. And it could - I says could - be the foundation of a really great game if both sides show up on the night.

Just call me Dr. Conciliation, homies.

Romero's obnoxious macho celebrations was enough to tip my support towards ze Germans. Cabello annoys me too, can't pinpoint why though, Messi also has a shit face and doesn't come across as a charitable bloke even if he doesn't take off his shirt to flex his muscles after scoring.

I can't deny he is one of the greatest players of all time. But I will compare him with another one that plays with him: I can't understand how Iniesta won't be considered overally better than him: Bigger brains, amazing passes, half the work was always done by him and Barcelona would crumble in his absence. Just because he ain't that exciting to watch (to me he is more than messi, to others maybe not) doesn't make him a worse player. He hasn't dominated solo with Barcelona. He has dominated with some of the best players of all time.

Also, Cristiano Ronaldo is more all-around than him (this is not the messi thread i can compare freely :D)
 FFS. You WUM you.

I have money riding on Germany, Brazil and Argentina to win the World Cup before the start of the tournament so whoever who wins, I'd still earn a decent amount of profit, albeit my bet on Germany was the highest. However strangely during the Holland vs Argentina match, I was supporting Holland. I just can't stand Argentina for some reason and I've been really impressed by how far Holland made it despite everyone writing them off before the start of the tournament that they won't even make it out of their group. Looking at this game, I can't see past a German win, they really should beat Argentina in regulation time but in a final, anything can happen and Argentina reminds me of the Spain 2010 WC winning team. They are winning all their matches by a single goal and they could score an early goal from a set-piece or a Messi free-kick and then defend. But I'm still going to keep my faith with the Germans, they have been the most impressive team by far and unlike Argentina, they are not a one-man team. They can score from anywhere. Another big positive factor why I'm so confident of a German win is that the bookmakers' odds are deadly accurate. Ever since the knock-out stage started, every favorites have won/qualified and yesterday I actually for once went against the trend by staking £4000 on Holland to qualify. Really regretted it as I initially wanted to go with Holland win/draw in regulation time but I was tempted by the odds of 2.2 over 1.55. The bookmakers have given a Germany win at 2.3 and and an Argentina win at 3.5 and Germany to win outright at 1.72 and Argentina at 2.2. Interestingly, this is the exact same odds which Argentina and Holland had except that Argentina was the favorites.

And for all those praising how great Argentina's defence is, wasn't Brazil defence pretty good too before they were found out by Germany? They only conceded 3 goals in all their matches which was pretty impressive. Said it again and again. To win a World Cup or any major tournament for that matter, you need depth. If you rely all your hopes on one or two key players, you will get found out. Just look at Brazil. Messi has been largely anonymous so far and now all of a sudden, he is going to turn up against Germany? I highly doubt so. This German team reminds me of Jupp Heynckes treble-winning Bayern Munich team. They are on a mission. So focused and determined. Even after leading 5-0 against Brazil at HT, you will expect them to let their guard down but they have obviously learnt from their mistakes in their 4-4 debacle against Sweden and still remained so well-disciplined and professional in the second half. After the match is over, they were still so respectful and classy with their celebrations. Germany's group was a lot tougher and they had to face France (which has been one of the most impressive teams) and the hosts whereas Argentina's only real test came against Holland, which they only won on a penalty shootout.

Argentina doesn't look good against any team that isn't afraid to go forward and attack heavily. And Germany is a lot stronger than ANY team Argentina has faced. Like I said before, this German team is on a mission. Germany has been the runner ups once, and third place twice in the last three World Cups. 24 years of hurt. This is the moment they have been waiting for. They wont let this slip away to a team like Argentina.

Just emptied all my money on a German World Cup win in an accumulator with United to make top four.
That's how confident I am with the Germans.
Germany will make history again by being the first European team to win in South America.
Auf geht Deuschland!

Spot on! Good luck to you mate! :)

My dream could be true, and you could get some decent money.

I think the original comment about Messi never being a problem for Germany or Bayern was plain stupid and factually wrong. No idea why marcosdeto thought it's worth replying to such nonsense though, better left ignored.

I don't expect us to change our gameplan to take Messi out of the game like the other teams did, so I'd say there's a chance that Messi will have a better game than he did against the Netherlands. But we're significantly stronger than any team Argentina faced so far and we should cause them way more problems in defense and in midfield, so I don't expect that it matters, at least I hope it won't. In 2010 we scored early through a set-piece, which allowed us to defend really deep and pick them out on the counter. The game on sunday will be different unless we again score early, which isn't easy against a so far solid looking Argentine defense.

are you refering to my previous post ?
Because I never said that Messi isn't a problem. I just stated that our players know how to contain him.
If we play a compact set up, similar to the games against france and brazil, I doubt that Messi will find much space to threaten our goal continously. There is really no change of gameplan needed.
Of course he could produce one or two extraordinary moments where he scores besides being covered by a defender.
But my point was that he will not dominate the game because of our compact defense and that he had a few quiet games this world cup. I dont get why this causes such a big upset.

ok, then, you won one game against messi, that's a fabulous record and deserves everything you said before

cheers

why are you acting like a child ?
You really believe Messi will destroy germanys defense ?
And do you really think he is in top form ?

To me he seemed invisible to many times at this world cup. He had his moments, but overall thats not the Messi from two years ago.
Maybe he'll prove me wrong, but I just don't see it.

Guys, let's all just calm down and take our tops off. This is getting us nowhere.

IF Messi plays as lazy as he did most of this tournament (especially yesterday) he will be annonymous on sunday once again.

Though i can't see a player beeing lazy in a WC final. But i thought that for a semifinal too tbh.

nope, not at all, i really think that we wont win against germany and im just hoping to have a decent enough game not to lose for a lot of goals

and i wasnt replying to you, i was replying to:

Germany : Argentina 4:0

Messi was never a problem for Germany. (Not for Bayern Munich and not for the national side)
Argentina would be the worst champion ever.

that was all

ok, then we see it not that different.
I dont think we will see a lot of goals though. So I wouldn't be frightend that argentina will lose by a big margin. Unlike Brazil,Argentina isn't playing like a headless chicken.
Against a good set up in defense germany has still problems. Germany will most certainly be more active than holland, but I doubt they will get a lot chances to score.

As always the little things will decide. One misdirected pass and it can be over. So, there will be much caution involved. (I just hope it's not gonna end in a boring match like yesterday)

a 2-1 or 1-0 for germany is what I expect (hope for).

I will laugh so hard if Argentina wins it. Especially because of all these Messi haters who are just trying to find something, anything just to put him down..If they cant find anything they just make things up.

To be fair to them, Messi hasn't exactly done anything special.

Despite Germany flying high, I think they'll struggle in this match against the Argies. Argentina's defensive solidity has really made them stable, credit to Sabella on that, although the cautious approach has made them look bereft of creativity and ideas. As for Germany, I can see them coming out and attacking Argentina first, but they'll struggle to create anything--as expected, it's hard to break down well organised defenses. I can see a poor 1-0, 2-1 match occurring, sadly, with little drama which will close a world cup that has been full of excitement. I'll be with Germany all the way but Argentina just might sneak it.

Most people who don't want Argentina to win aren't doing it because of Messi. They're doing it because Argentina haven't been all that great throughout the tournament and arguably wouldn't really be deserved winners.
