Final - Germany vs. Argentina

Most people who don't want Argentina to win aren't doing it because of Messi. They're doing it because Argentina haven't been all that great throughout the tournament and arguably wouldn't really be deserved winners.

There's no need to be bringing common sense to this.

Not sure why so many think this will be a walkover for Germany. Argentina have done really well defensively in the last couple games, and whilst Messi hasn't been the same one man attack he was in the group stages, Higuain has stepped up, Lavezzi had a decent game last night, Di Maria could still make the final and Aguero is going to get a second bite at the cherry to show what he can do in the World Cup.

I think it'll be close, and perhaps Argentina will finally show the same deadly counter attack they had in the qualifiers, plus they have Messi, who as lazy as he might be lately, is still by far the best player in the world, and still the most creative/decisive player in this tournament so far.

Going to root for Argentina solely for the reason that it has a Sporting player, Marcos Rojo.

We'll see. Germany steam rolled them in 2010, but Argentina do look like they've finally got their shit together. Think there chances will depend on whether Di Maria is match fit and whether Messi actually can be arsed to look for space though. Germany won't be as negative as Holland and Belgium were that's for sure.

Thats supposed to be complimentary, eh?! LOL
People underestimate the German powerhouse at their own peril. The way I see it, Germany really is playing another level and Argentina will be unlikely to be able to cause the Germans any upset IMHO. They are so much more organised and I will be very surprised if they won't score first in the first half. Once they do, Argentina has a mountain to climb. Messi is not going to make much difference if Löw gets its strategy right, and I believe he can. :)

I don't see this being quite the horror show it was with Germany's last opponents but I still see Germany being comfortable winners. They won't have the freedom they had against Brazil as the Argies will be much more compact and rigid but if the Germans get one early, I can see them tearing Argentina apart as they go in search of an equalizer. Messi may not have as much to say about the final outcome as we may like to think.

It's a World Cup final, i'd be very surprised if Germany went for the jugular as early as they did Vs Brazi, who in fairness just let them walk through them at will.

Yeah but in this thread I see mostly a discussion about Messi.

Will Di Maria be fit? If not Messi needs to have a stormer otherwise Germany will win comfortably. Argentina haven't been much better than Brazil were but obviously they won't play senseless football like them. Still feel Germany should have too much for them as the game progresses

Aguero is back though, Higuain has played himself into a bit of form too. So those two up top with Messi behind is better than what Germany have. Di Maria's pace and energy will be crucial in midfield though, really hope he makes it.

Argentina will play for penalties again, against the team who's won every single WC penalty shoot out ever. Go figure...

I know a team who's beat the Germans on pens.

I can't deny he is one of the greatest players of all time. But I will compare him with another one that plays with him: I can't understand how Iniesta won't be considered overally better than him: Bigger brains, amazing passes, half the work was always done by him and Barcelona would crumble in his absence. Just because he ain't that exciting to watch (to me he is more than messi, to others maybe not) doesn't make him a worse player. He hasn't dominated solo with Barcelona. He has dominated with some of the best players of all time.

Also, Cristiano Ronaldo is more all-around than him (this is not the messi thread i can compare freely :D)
Don't worry, you are the only person on the whole f*cking planet who even thinks that is a question. Even Iniesta's mommy doesn't think he is better than Messi. Your Ronaldo comment is also a joke. This type of nonsense does reveal what is motivating many of the Argentina haters. And the ``Germans are more deserving`` stuff is just hilarious. Tahiti would have beaten the Brazil team that went out there.

I can see everyone has choose a side, who doesn't give a rat face who win the cup like me because I've root for holland because of RVP and LVG and now they're out.

Wtf is going ,whats with that germany love?

I thought England and Germany are the biggest enemys.

LoL

If Di Maria is fit, I think Argentina can nick it.

Germany has been the best team in the WC, but I think people are getting a bit carried away thinking it'll be a Germany rout. While Germany demolished Brazil, it has to be said that Brazil capitulated completely. Argentina have been very good defensively lately, and perhaps their counter attacking prowess will be in show for the final.

Looking forward to the game.

yes, i'm starting to think that we have too many enemies -football wise-

brazil, england, germany even italy would love to get revenge from the 1990 semis

well, we've been naughty

You lot are not our enemy, just the last opponent for us to beat to win the Cup. There is no special connection or relationship between both nations, although we tend to meet quite often in World Cups. Otherwise this is simply a duel between two big football nations, not comparable with special opponents like Netherlands or Italy for us.

Apart from some violent behavior, cheating and luckballing, it's because despite your wealth of flair and talent over the years you've been mostly a defensive minded team, especially lately. The 4-0 against Germany only reinforced that belief. And this time it appears to have gone to such lengths that the attack is being stifled in favor of the defense. This, more than Germany's quality, will be your undoing in the final imo. The football gods tend to punish teams who stray too far in the extremes.

I don't hate Argentina. I think they've got plenty of talented players and are always tricky opponents. But while they have done brilliantly to get to the final, I still felt there was something lacking. Watching that semi-final, I wasn't particularly impressed with either side. Germany just look faster, more assured and more ruthless.

Ok, maybe it's me that wants to beat germany after two sour defeats :)

funny thing is that everyone -me included- thought that argentina was going to have a great offense but a very weak and mundane defense

just the contrary, it seems that sabella found out how to make the team defend, but doesnt have a clue on how to make them attack

Nobody's written about the fact that it's Argentina that hasn't achieved its potential. On paper, injury-free and at full form, Argentina with Kun, Di Maria, Higuain and Messi might actually have been considered favorites at this stage. The problem is they've all struggled with injuries and form.

People are commenting as if Argentina making it this far has been a freak occurrence. In reality they have made it this far DESPITE these challenges, which is a testament to their management and players. They should be given more credit than being labeled a side somehow "undeserving" of making the final.

Not sure if you watched 1990 WC final between West Germany and Argentina.

That West Germany was a great team, arguable better than this Germany team. And that Argentina was probably one of the weakest team in WC final, only reached the final by two penalty shootout wins in a row. That Argentina was certainly worse than this Argentina team : Maradona was carrying injury, no proper striker, their only good forward Caniggia was suspended. Argentina had four players suspended because of injuries or booking, unable to play in the final.

You would probably guess West Germany would massascre them . But they only lost the game at 85th minute by a penalty.

My point is Germany are favorites, but IMO it won't be as easy as many people here think. I certainly won't be surprised at all if Germany can't score in the first half. Actually I won't be surprised if this match goes to ET or even penalty shoot out. Nothing is certain. You just need to look at Euro cup 1992 how Denmark won it, Euro 2004 the Greek story, or the 94 CL final where the underdog Milan destroyed the Cruyff's Barca dream team 4-0.

That West Germany side ran out of steam, but yeah brilliant team...the best German side I've seen.

Romero

Zabaleta - Demichelis - Garay - LB

CM - Mascherano

Di Maria - Messi - Lavezzi

Aguero
If Di Maria makes it and Aguero is up for it, this isn't a team Germany will walk all over. No chance. It could be far closer than some seem to think.

Yes it is. Messi is lazy and won't help out Mascheranp and the other deep midfielder, Kroos, Khedira and Schweinstieger would dominate.

Argentina don't have the quality to stop the German midfield bar Mascherano. Kroos will get all the time and space in the world and boss this game.
