Barcelona have made a formal bid of £29 million to Arsenal for Cesc Fabregas.
The Spanish champions are keen to conclude a deal for the midfield player before the World Cup and sent Arsenal their written offer on Tuesday night.
The bid is likely to be rejected as Arsenal have a much higher valuation of their captain who is under contract for four more years.
The move, however, is a clear statement of Barcelona’s intent and sources at the club are “optimistic” of re-signing their former youth player.
“Everyone knows that Cesc wants to play for this club and everyone knows that we also want this. But there is a third major player, which is Arsenal,” Joan Oliver, Barcelona’s director general, said.
“Any deal must go through them and June 1 was the beginning of the period of official negotiations. Until earlier there were informal conversations, but since yesterday these are formal - and the usual mechanism is to present a formal and concrete offer.
“So yesterday afternoon, we submitted a written bid to Arsenal.”
Rafael Yuste, Barcelona’s vice-president, added: “I’m optimistic that he’ll be able to sign for Barca as soon as possible and it’s clear that everybody here will give him a warm welcome.
“We’ll do nothing that might make it more difficult for him to come here and we won’t rush things - but we won’t stop either.”
Fabregas, who has a contract at the Emirates until 2014, has already told Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager, that he wants to leave the club and return to his homeland.
Barcelona have already signed David Villa, the Spain striker, from Valencia for £34million this summer.
