Fabio Coentrao

And Evra tbf. Evra has been excellent for the most part. Playing a crazy amount of games to a high standard season after season.

That is probably what has done for Evra. Far too many games without a rest, having to carry injuries because no viable back up.

Is this bloke better than Buttner? Will he be a first team player or a back up to our next LB? I've never seen him play. :/

I don't even think its probable. He's given his all for this club season after season, and even if you look at this season he's made more appearances than anyone (4 more league starts than anyone). It's unsurprising when playing games every three days at this level he will struggle occasionally. Such overuse will definitely have affected him, and at this age it's probably catching up with him a tad.

Might we play him on the left wing? I can't see Moyes just disregarding Evra for the rest of the season. And knowing him he's going to kick up an almighty row.

Yip. Would like to see how creative he could be in there. It's certainly a possibility by all accounts.

Really getting more excited about this than I have about any transfer since Thiago. Hopefully we can get it wrapped up this month.

It's possible, saying that Evras performances have been below his usual high standards this season. I'd imagine if and it's a big if Coentrao does come in this month then Evra could used as the back up player.

Coentrao could be used in midfield and on the wing easily. That's another advantage (besides European experience) that he clearly has over Baines who can only really play as a left back.

I may not be as savvy as Ed Woodward, but it seems to me the only thing holding up any potential deal would be Madrid's understandable reluctance to lose another defender when they're already very thin in that area. So why don't we offer Buttner or Fabio in on loan as well like Madrid are doing with Sevilla in their Moreno deal? They're not looking for a world class replacement, they just want somebody for emergency cover. It doesn't seem like it, but Madrid do try to be financially sensible (selling Ozil for example) whenever possible and offloading Coentrao's contract for that of Buttner's or Fabio's is a good deal for Madrid. I aslo highly doubt Buttner or Fabio would consider going to Madrid under these circumstances a downgrade on their current situations.

 Yeah...he's a bit better than Buttner.

Top ten at his position in the world. His form for Portugal in particular has been ridiculously good at times. He's had a mixed go at Madrid because of Marcelo's presence, who might be just a slight bit better. But Coentrao is a class player, no doubt about it.

Do you honestly feel Madrid would take Buttner? I have a feeling Fulham would reject the temptation..but with RM you never know

I don't know how serious we are - if indeed we're serious about Coentrao at all. If we'd aked for a deal in November/December I think we'd have seen Madrid pick up a loan deal themselves over the Christmas break and use that break to get him into the squad.

From external appearances I'd guess Moyes really wasn't keen but Evra's injury may have forced him to try and get the loan deal going again.

So where are we now? I bet Madrid would let us borrow Coentrao if we loaned them Vidic and Fabio, or Smalling say - they're not exactly negotiating novices. Maybe Mendes can find them a player/s.

Taking a player off an unwilling Spanish club (like Sevilla) mid-season is not their MO and I'm not sure what we could offer Madrid that would make them do it just to help us out with a rushed loan deal.

We took Buttner and loaned out Fabio for the exact same scenario, just swap out Evra for Marcelo.

Is he injured now? Wasn't even on Real's bench today.

Is there any truth in the Moreno deal or was that made up?

Real Madrid have ligned up Moreno for the summer as a replacement for Coentrao. I think we can easily get Coentrao but not this winter, we'll have to wait untill the summer.
