Fabio Coentrao

Shaw would probably be a better bet long term but, with the amount of experience we're likely to lose in the summer, maybe a player closer to their prime is what we need right now. Coentrao will do quite nicely.

Plus at least we'll have one of our problem positions sorted. We have a fair bit of rebuilding to do in the next couple of transfer windows so the quicker we start the better off we'll be.

I would take Coentrao in a heart beat.
BTW WHEN he does sign what number is he going to get do you reckon
*no not number of red cards but shirt number.
** yes I did say when as I am now being super positive (can only last a few minutes)

Maybe I'm being ungrateful but it still feels a bit shit that our most likely signing this window is a left back.

Yeah, a little. I still feel we'll be in for a midfielder as the scouting is too intense for it to be just for the summer, but this is a position that we need to have shored up pronto. Evra and Buttner have been the cause of us giving up so many goals and chances this season it's not even funny. We need this sorted ASAP and he's a good player.

Also, he can play in midfield, so.....

If this month then 8, if summer then 3 or 5

If we do get him this month (if at all) it'll probably be 22, with Fabio going on loan to Cardiff. Then when Evra goes he'd probably get the number 3 shirt.

100% prefer Shaw, he's exactly the type of player United should be signing. Young, English and a very good player. We'll live to regret it but there we go. Opens the floor for Chelsea to snap him up. Sigh.

Coentrao I have no doubt will be good at United, just think Shaw is the far better bet. Let's see how much he's signed for...
Ya never know we may get involved. I really wish we would at least be trying to talk to the player. Who knows where this window will leave us.

Have you added predicting the future to your repertoire? Encyclopedic knowledge plus a future predicting would make you unstoppable. :nervous:

No point crying about Shaw. He's a Chelsea fan - if both of us are in the race for him, then he'll no doubt go for Chelsea. Cole will leave soon, so the left back spot will be there for him to make the claim.

The same thing can be said about Evra I'm sure, but the factor of him being a Chelsea fan is then the vital one.

I'm happy with Coentrao. We need class and experienced talent at the moment - not another project, AT THE MOMENT. Our defence isn't the epitome of experience if Evra and/or Ferdinand and/or Vidic leaves.

We'll see :p it's just what makes the most sense if we do get him. Fabio's been linked with a loan to Cardiff for a few days and if we do bring someone in, I can see Fabio confirmed as on loan there around the same time.

Coentrao is in my eyes our best, most attainable left back target. Unless Moyes doesn't want Coentrao, I can't see how he won't sign for us with Real Madrid looking to have signed another left back.

I hope Büttner is off somewhere. Preferably permanently.
Coentrao coming will be good news.

There does appear to be some level of reluctance to sign Coentrao on Moyes' part. It would appear he was third choice behind Baines and Shaw. Maybe he just doesn't rate him quite that highly?

I think Baines was the target in the summer and we fell back on him but Real pulled out of the deal because of much publicized issues in signing a replacement.

I think we've been trying to get him all month though and probably before but it's all been down to whether they sign a replacement which it would appear they have. I think Shaw was probably an option that we enquired about and would have taken seriously if we thought we could get him for a good deal but Coentrao was always the realistic target.

Real Madrid have signed Moreno, so this could happen now.

I'm still waiting to see anything from the usual sources. The "serious" TV and radio gossip shows kickoff at midnight (11pm UK)

Everybody (and their dog) knows that Madrid have been looking at Moreno, but it's very unusual for Madrid to launch a hostile bid in January against another Spanish team. They'd need a really good reason. Like they'd already sold their own player at a good price say!

We haven't made any moves for Shaw so we have no reason to believe Coentrao is behind him and for all we know Coentrao's availability was presented to us later in August than was practical. But since we have known Coentrao was a possibility then our interest in Baines has subsided so he seems pretty much first choice.

Yeah, I'd say there wasn't a lot we could reasonably do until Madrid got their replacement.

At the moment even the Sevilla media that are being referenced are talking about a summer move.

I've still not found a serious source for a January move yet.

Anderson's in Fiorentina as we speak. That's a positive.

Nah, I think Baines was certainly our first choice and would still be our first choice if we could get him for anything like a reasonable fee. I don't think many people would argue against that, Moyes clearly wanted Baines from the moment he arrived here. Our interest in Coentrao increased as Baines became an unrealistic option.

Whether we preferred Shaw over Coentrao is much more debateable but I'd certainly say we have a registered interest in him. Price and availability make Coentrao a much more realistic target but, if we had a free choice, I'd imagine we'd prefer Shaw. Just my opinion though.

Wouldn't Sevillas own radio channel sound like something reliable?

Neo FM? Never heard of them or their reporters. Nor have I heard the broadcast so I don't know the context.

It's not impossible, and it's exactly the deal you'd hope to see if Coentrao is going to be allowed to leave.

Madrid have prepared the press with stories. Coentrao wants to leave. Marcelo has got fat again during the Christmas break (what is it with Brazilians and food?). Moreno is understood to be the target - but for summer.

Have they brought it forward to January?

Maybe, but I'd be more convinced if I heard it from a Madrid ITK with a track record or a show like Larguero that's got a reputation for breaking stories.

Shaw is younger and Britisher, which are both pluses for him. But I see no evidence that he's currently better than Coentrao, and there's no way to be sure he will go on to be. Look how highly rated other young British full-backs have been, only not to progress as hoped (yes Wayne, I'm looking at you).

If Evra is off, the 25 year-old with 43 caps for Portugal seems by far the safer bet than the 18 year-old with 43 league appearances.

I thought you meant the website of the radio station. I looked there and couldn't see anything.

Nothing on Marca either.

Google translated from El Mundo Deportivo:

The Real Madrid would have tied the Sevilla youth international Alberto Moreno for about 21 million euros, according to the radio said 'Stepmom', the Neo FM station Seville. In operation the Russian player Denis Cheryshev loan from white until end of season in the Seville club would be included. The promising left-back, also claimed by the Naples Rafa Benitez, come to the Bernabeu next summer presumably to cover up and Fabio Coentrao put pressure on Brazilian Marcelo

MD - I read the original article yesterday - give Neo FM as a source and talk about a pre-contract and a summer move.

Thanks Amir.

FWI, if you drag the article into the actual google translate rather than convert in page it's a much better translation.
