Fabio Coentrao

If Coentrão reclaimed the form that saw Madrid buy him he'd be the best left-back in the league, should we sign him. There's no issue to him being behind Marcelo, who has an excellent effectiveness with Ronaldo, in the pecking order.

No you're missing the point. Players like Ozil and Sneijder were sold because some flashier player has become available. Coentrao deserves the second choice spot.

Now I am not saying that we shouldn't buy him up. Every player deserves a second chance and I am confident that he can come to OT and do good. However lets stop with this excitement. FFS we're getting Real backup fullback and he deserves to be there.

This "Xxx club Reject" attitude is exactly what has likely cost us the chance of signing a load of good players over the last few years. How about Barca reject Yaya Toure - now the best midfielder in the league. Or the likes of Van der Vaart, Schneider and Ozil to name but a few of the Madrid rejects.

Some fans would rather just keep signing overpriced PL players from mid table clubs who take us to the cleaners with transfer fees because they don't want to sell. Then you have a player like Coentrao, who has plenty of CL and top level experience, is entering his prime years, is available at a very reasonable price (we expect)...

In my view, Coentrao is better than Evra. He can also play on the wing or in midfield if required - which along with LB are the exact three positions we need to strengthen more than anything.

Exactly, if we used Ronaldo to get Sneijder and Robben plus say £20/30M at the time would have been an absolute bargain.

You would be right if Marcelo is actually much better than Coentrao, like for example our first choice is much better than our second choice fullback. It's questionable if Marcelo is better than Coentrao at all, because lot of people rate Coentrao higher than him(including lot of Madrid fans too).

If Madrid can get 20 odd million for a reserve they'd be mad not to sell and then spend some of that on another bench warmer.

Mourinho used to prefer Coentrao in the big games as he felt he was the better defender, while Marcelo played the smaller teams as he is deemed a better attacker.

It's really a close call between them but I think Marcelo is the favourite right now. Either way Coentrao is no "reject". He would improve us definitely, and that's what we need at present. No time for ego's.

And I think he is the favourite just because Coentrao has injury/wish to go issues. If he was 100% fit and ready to play he would be their first choice at the moment IMO, Marcelo is far from his best form at the moment.

Just sent-off for a stupid second yellow - and then pushed an opposition player on his way off the pitch.

Coentrao gets sent off with 5 minutes to play - his team 2 goals up (4 on aggregate)
An "instinctive" professional foul gets him his second yellow of the night
Maybe it's true - he wants to convince Ancelotti he's dispensable.

This isn't true though. They both played roughly the same amount of big games, and in a couple of them, Coentrao played out of position, while Marcelo played as a left back. Marcelo is easily the better left back, for me anyway. The Real Madrid fans seem to think so too, and I've never felt that Coentrao has ever been welcomed properly at the club. I remember when they booed him against Malaga in 11/12 I think it was because he was caught smoking (or something like that), plus the price tag hasn't been justified by him. Re devilish point about him being second choice: it's a lazy point to make because he's second choice to a very good left back while he himself is capable of reaching that level at another club. He would instantly improve our left side and IMO, he has a better skill set than Baines. That in itself enough to thrill anyone.

And I've been saying that for years.

Read my posts again. I am NOT against this deal. However lets not get carried away too much. We're getting Coentrao and not Cristiano Ronaldo.

I don't actually understand the new thread title.

Fabio da Silva and Fabio Coentrao both picked up red cards (the former against Swansea and the latter today, against Osasuna). And one could potentially play for us, while the other already plays for us, leaving us with two Fabios in a red shirt.

So, the gossip about a price being agreed and something supposedly happening in the week when terms could be agreed with player is all nonsense? Have Madrid/United denied it?

For those naming him as a number two to Marcelo, can I ask... Which LB would displace Marcelo in that team genuinely? I can't think of one.

Out of the squad they have nobody obviously. But if you were to pick anyone who would displace him at the moment....
Philip Lahm, and don't say he's a right back. He's comfortable as feck on either side. He's the best fullback on the planet.

I think what Jay was getting at is that there's no shame in being number 2 to Marcelo.

Fair enough. He is a player who I think is underrated, we so rarely sign players from top European clubs I think we could get a pleasant surprise with Coentrao.

I'm of this opinion on this deal too. Would be a very good signing right now, as he's better and younger then Evra right now, and versatile, but he's far away from what Evra was in his prime, and he's just a good fullback. He's not world class or anything, and I wouldn't expect him to come in and be the best leftback in the league right away or something like that. What I like him for is that he's very good at linking up with his winger like Evra is, so we'll continue that way. It won't be some huge boost to our starting 11 IMO, but seeing as Evra's off, he's the best realistic option.
