Fabio Coentrao

Paul Clement has said he's not going anywhere this January in an interview on Talksport.

Shaw hasn't hit the heights he did last season, but I think his talent is there for all to see. If he continues to develop and work hard, i'm sure he'll end up as a very, very good full-back. I'm sure he'll be expensive though.

Speaking of Southampton, what ever happened to Nathaniel Clyne? I know he's still around and all, but at just 22 years of age he seems to have gone off the (transfer) radar a little. Do people not rate him as much anymore? I'm sure we were linked with him many times early on last season. Sorry to derail.
I don't believe we need a right back.

I reckon we are waiting on Madrid to bring in a replacement left back again before they let him go.

In a way, a swap loan deal for Evra could work...

They have a high quality back up who if not playing every game will be very good. We get a 25 year old who should be able to cope with playing every game.

Yes I know Corntrao had injury problems and it's a ridiculous idea in anything other than theory but I'm just throwing it out there for shits and gigs.

Can we not trick them into taking Büttner?

I'd be delighted if this deal went through. Coentrao would be an improvement on both Buttner and an ageing Evra.

Exclusive – Clement rules out Morata and Coentrao Real Madrid exits
Arsenal’s pursuit of Real Madrid star Alvaro Morata may be over for the time being, as Real Madrid assistant manager Paul Clement told talkSPORT there will be no transfer activity from the La Liga giants during the January window.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger had confirmed he would be open to a loan switch for the young Spanish forward this month, after the 21-year-old admitted he may have to look away from the Bernabeu for regular first-team football.
Meanwhile, Manchester United are thought to be continuing their chase for Portuguese international Fabio Coentrao’s signature, after failing to sign the full-back in the summer.
But Clement insists the two Los Blancos stars will not be leaving due to their thin squad – though he suggests the club may be open to offers in the summer.
When asked whether Madrid would be willing to allow Morata and Coentrao to leave in January, Clement told Drivetime: “I don’t think so at this point.
“Alvaro is going to attract interest because he is a very talented young player, he’ll be very sought-after.
“But we have a small squad here, we’re working with 20 outfield players and we currently have two players out with injury, so that leaves us with 18.
“These are the players that I’m pretty sure we will work with for the rest of the season.
“I don’t see any movement in this window at all from us. We’ve very happy with the players we’ve got and in the majority of cases the players are happy at the club and want to help us be successful this year in every competition.
“I’m not sure what might happen next summer, but that’s certainly the case now.
“We’ll move through January into the business end of the season with the squad we’ve currently got.”

That's always been the case with a January move for Coentrao.

Coentrao wants to leave.

They haven't got any cover - in fact in terms of defenders Ancelotti has got Arbeloa sat on the bench because he's the only fit, first team cover he's got for all 4 defensive positions, and he's trying not to use him.

Unless Mendes has got some multiway swap deal on offer that leaves them with more cover, I don't see hpw they can let Coentrao go. I got my hopes up when I saw the tweet from an AS reporter, but as I said then - that comment didn't get repeated on the AS site, which means AS didn't have a name for the player(s) coming in.

Yes, because obviously if the daily star says that's what's happening, we can be sure it's true.

I think it's all rubbish, why would Ancelotti have changes his stance since the summer? They still won't have ample replacement for Contrao and if anything are less likely to let another player go as Carlo has already said he regrets selling Ozil to the Arsene in the summer... I can see it being earliest of summer if he does move on..

Wouldn't mind us agreeing a summer deal now though, incase he does start playing more, rising his price..

It's supposed to be a loan, why would valuation come into it? We'd probably pay peanuts for the loan anyway and the buyout clause could be set at anything and negotiated down after the season.

I obviously have no idea what's going on behind the scenes, and I don't know how reliable this report is. But according to it, there is negotiation over the price tag for a permanent move. "But despite willing to offer the Spanish giants around £14m for the full-back Real bosses are holding out for closer to £20m."

I agree with you though that it's not clear why we couldn't just take him on loan now and then negotiate the price for a permanent move when/if we decide that is the right option.

Yeah. If they were to let him go, they'd want a replacement in first. Like jojojo said, at the moment they've only got one defender on the bench at the moment, so it wouldn't make any sense to let Coentrao go as if they do pick up another injury, they'll be in trouble.

Exactly, same reason Moyes doesn't want to let Buttner go yet, not because he may one day be part of the XI, simply because if we need him (before the end of the season) and he was sold, he wouldn't hear the end of it.

To be fair at times we'd have been better off playing with 10 men rather than sticking Buttner there.

Very true, however my point is fans may say 'Sell X', 'Sell X', but if we loose and the player in 'X's' position plays badly, you know it'll be 'Stupid Moyes, shouldn't have sold X'...

He's back in the Madrid squad. They play Osasuna in the Copa del Rey tomorrow.
Marcelo's expected to be rested.

Can't they use Nacho as LB cover? I know he's a CB, but to have two potential first team LBs isn't very productive, and it leaves one being more frustrated than the other if there isn't regular rotation, much like it has been for the past couple of years.

Seems like we've dithered again and missed the boat.

It's 2 weeks from the transfer deadline, calm down.

This is all so reminiscent of last summer. He's going to come but not until the end of the week...maybe next week...etc.

Nowadays we get thrilled about anything even the rubbish left in Real Madrid trash can

Tbf you'd never be satisfied with anything anyway. We could sign Ronaldo and Messi in the same window and you'd still find a way to criticize the club.

If by "the rubbish left in Real Madrid trash can" you mean their players give your head a wobble.

I thought we were over this 'players surplus to requirements at other clubs aren't good enough for us' thing.

I much doubt that, although to be fair we will never have a chance to prove that.

I dont mind if we sign the Portuguese kid. However ffs lets keep some cool. We're signing Real's second choice left back and not Cristiano Ronaldo. Imagine if some big club does the same thing for our Buttner (ok Contreao is a better player but you get the drift

Yeah, especially when you consider the success of people like Eto'o, Sneijder, Robben...

Do you seriously put Coentrao to the level of Eto'o, Sneijder and Robben?

Understandable but being second choice at Real Madrid in any position isn't shameful considering how they operate/hoard players. Casillas is second choice to Lopez for example.

Frequently the people on their bench are good enough to player in most team's starting XI's and given our current situation I think Coentrao could slot into ours too

I'd be delighted to take Di María and Coentrao off their hands. They're no Robben/Sneijder but they'd make us a much more formidable side.

There's nothing to be ashamed of taking Real's second choice especially when the talent in question are the likes of Ozil and Sneijder who were sold to give way to flashier player. However

A) Coentrao deserves the no 2 spot
B) There's nothing to be so thrilled about signing him.
