Fabio Coentrao

Of course he gets in at LB... Evra has been diabolical (again) by his standards recently. Rotating Coentrao and Evra would be great for LB slot.

is he fully fit at the moment? As I notice that he doesnt even make the bench for Real nowadays

Alberto Moreno is suppose to be the replacement.

Moreno's not really a quick fix stand-in/backup for Marcelo. He's young (21), has only really started playing for Sevilla's first team this year and has just become a full international. Bags of potential, not much experience.

But January of a WC year seems like poor timing for a sudden move to the sub's bench at Madrid (maybe in the summer). Don't see why he can't come to us though. :D

This would be cool. I'm not confident of it going through, but it would be a step in the right direction in terms of signings. Sir Alex never made these kind of signings. It's like they were too obvious. Too much of a ego to for a Madrid reject. We never even entertained the idea of going for the likes of Robben or Sneijder even though they were genuinely fantastic players.

I hope this changes under Moyes and I suspect it will. Coentrao is very good. He's fast, skilful, is a proven international and can't be any worse than Evra defensively. Plus he's only 25. This ticks all boxes. Baines is 29 and his all round game not as good and Shaw looks ready in waiting for Ashley Cole's job. Get this one done.

Last time I saw him was the 2 matches against Sweden - and he was Portugal's best player over those 2 matches (Ronaldo is too good - he doesn't count)

a MASSIVE upgrade on Evra.

I read stuff like this and laugh. You've no idea how he'd be fit into the premiership. Hes not exactly a talented defender either.

I agree he'd replace certain aspects of Evra's style but he isnt an upgrade defensively. I seen him and Marcelo get tortured by some average attackers in La Liga.

You can laugh but Evra's defensive contribution is laughably bad. Coentrao is not a great defender but at least he'll improve that.

I think after settling in and getting rid of all the rust... And there will be a lot of it, might take a season to 18 months even, then he will be better than Evra defensively even if he's not "solid". Coentrao likes a tackle so he'll win the ball, can and probably will be out of position a number of times. Mourinho has also used him as a defensive minded central midfielder, which I'm sure will worry people that we'll do the same. But at least thats some versatility and you never know, he might actually be a decent backup to Jones if needed there.

You mean we may not have to worry about your Aaron Lennons and Nathan Dyers anymore? (and Russel Martins)

I can see the excitement and hope building in this thread.

Don't do this to yourselves lads.

He's not, Madrid aren't letting anyone leave.

I think we could see him try and force a move (somewhere, not specifically here) to get first team football in time for the summer internationals

We have a pretty good recent history with Spanish and Portuguese players so I think he'd be happy to come here.

Moyes said it's not true that we're in for him on MUTV in case anyone was getting a little bit excited. Might not mean anything and he could just be saying it but I doubt it.

No, of course. Why would we do something crazy like actually sign a fecking player? The bunch we've got are good for a few more seasons yet!

Seriously though, he was as good as signed in the summer. Why would we now suddenly not be interested? Unless we've got Baines in the bag (probably for twice as much).

I've just read (from some randomer on twitter mind) that he didn't deny we were interested in him, just that a deal had been done.

If it's close and it's not a done deal yet if course he will say that.

I would read nothing into that at all.

And Fergie wouldn't sell Madrid a virus. Don't listen to people, even the people worth listening to.

Okay that's better. Saw what he tweeted at first and thought "great, more good news...". At least it looks like that deal will probably come off then. We need a lot more then just signing a player though.

Moyes says we are not in for him and it turns into but he as not denied that we are in for him.How does that work.

Whilst that is very true. Don't get greedy! Anything will do at the moment to lift us a bit! If Coentrao gets signed, it will lift the spirits a bit I should think.

I meant like completely changing the style, not more players! (Even though we desperately need that too). No point in signing coentrao if we intend on continuing on playing in the same, shit 1 dimensional way.

Because he didn't say we aren't in for him, he denied a deal had been agreed.

I reckon Coentrao will now say he's actually quite happy on Real's bench.

Right, to avoid any confusion. He was asked if agent was in Manchester to finalise deal - he said that's not true. That was it.

All of a sudden that's become were not interested etc. He was asked a question and he answered it - i.e, agent wasn't in Manchester tonight

Was that said in the presser?
