F1 2021 Season

Worth pointing out that Mazepin managed to finish 21st in the championship in a sport with 20 cars.

Impressive.

In fairness, think Russell did that a couple of years back. But still, a fitting placement for that prick.

But no one knows how the rest of it would have went after it. For example what the decisions would have been under the virtual safety car.

Max's tyres were always getting shot, and that incident wasn't cut and dried as to what happened. The stewards think he forced that situation, not sure I agree with that, but he still had to pit when he pitted. Nothing changed as a result of that in terms of tyres/strategy.

The last decision was a complete omni shambles and changing of the rules. Not an interpretation, a change to suit the TV and get a "final lap showdown'".

Now we can talk about right and wrong in both, no problem, but there's no way they are even remotely close to the same thing.

Max has 18 top 2 finishes this year, the most by any driver in F1 history. "Undeserved champion" according to some.

The way the season ended doesn't sit right with me, but selective memory on here is hilarious. Baku, Hungary and Silverstone. This WDC should've been sewn up a while ago.
Nobody is saying Max wouldn't have been a worthy winner if he won this race on merit, then fair play.

Nobody can say that ending wasn't shambolic. The whole race was abandoned and settled on 1 lap

Also have another question. How was max able to pit and catch up to Lewis?

Don't they all have to drop their speed to let's say "X". If they are all doing "X" speed, how does he close the initial gap and the pit stop time without breaking some speed regulation?
Because the gap between the first 3 and everybody else was massive which basically gives him a free pit stop as he'll still come out in the same position and lost out on 5-10 seconds to Lewis instead of the 25 seconds he would have in a normal pitstop.

Finished behind a one-armed man who had a go in an Alfa for a couple of races, no less.

A bit surprised why overturning the race, applying the proper rules, would be seen as more of a farce than having the result stand with completely made up rules.
Would absolutely love the replies from Max fans if the result was overturned. Sadly it won't happen.

Lets be honest the race director fecked up big time, but it must stand or F1 will be turned into a laughing stock.
It might have been exciting for the causal odd race watching but for the fans it was a disgrace.
I wanted Lewis to win, but there is no way I want him winning by appeal.
I have read posts saying he will walk away from F1, I say not a chance , he will be back next season wanting his title back and fighting for it.
It’s already a farce - at least this would be a farce ending up with the correct race winner based on today’s race. Either way it’s going to CAS.

That's not what I asked exactly but someone else got what I meant and replied. Thanks.

Fair enough. As a neutral, I'm glad there were allowed that final racing lap but I also grasp that it was unfair how it unfolded.

It is arguable if you look at this race only. Over the course of the season is a different story.

Merit? Max was not making the calls, stewards/FIA did. He made most of the situation which opened up for him, which in this case was a one lap dash and he made it work.

Besides, I'm obviously talking about the season as a whole. That's why I quoted a stat of 18 top 2 finishes. Max deserves this, ending wasn't ideal, but that doesn't mean he didn't drive his ass off all year to get to this point. Folks are right to bring up Hamiltons' misfortune today, but at the same time, Verstappen had his in Baku, Silverstone and Hungary.

And the amazing fortune Lewis had in Imola, where he should have finished last after spending a full minute doing donuts in the gravel but still finished second.

Max was unfortunate in Baku and Hungary, Silverstone he takes partial blame for. He also brake checked his main competitor and got away with it.

Does he deserve to be champion? Yes, is it justice? No.

If you want to talk about misfortune and justice, Lewis is probably a 10 time world champion by now. Just enjoy it Max fans, justification as to why its deserved isn't required.

I guess it’s a matter of debate, but generally I think most people were of the view that going into this race both drivers have done great and both were deserving. And I think it’s in this context that people say “underserved” - not because he didn’t over the season, but because both did and the way it was won today was not deserved.

Absolute novice but I've kept watch due to the hype around this season. Can anyone explain in simplistic terms what the controversy is regarding the race.

Well done Max! Deserved title win over the course of the season, and after all the bad luck he’s had. He’s been the better driver over this season for me. Hopefully the first of many to come. Him and Lewis have been on another level compared to the rest. End of the race, I’m pretty sure my heart was going faster than these cars

Mercedes in the second half of seasons is something else. They turn the heat on like crazy, and the cars seem to get way faster. Ham gracious in defeat, doubt anyone else in the grid could have been composed in that situation. Respect. Having 7 titles probably helps though

If tweet fails to show:
Red Bull meeting with the stewards over. If you can read anything into the look on Christian Horner’s face as he walked through the paddock, he did not look a happy chap

Max drove brilliantly this year, but even with 18 top 2 finishes, not including the last race, Max and Lewis were tied in points going into this weekend. So Lewis drove well also and equally to Max, to make the final race such a spectacle for what it meant.

Lewis totally dominated today, nobody can dispute that. But as Horner said with about 10 laps to go, RB needed a miracle that was the crash AND Masi changing the racing rules for the sake of entertainment and NOT racing integrity/merit.

The race director will take the bullet for this and he will be the fall guy but the result won’t be changed

What a joke of a sport

There are plenty of experts on here but I think the gist is that a group of cars should have been allowed to change track position but they decided to only let the ones between Max and Lewis do it.

The suggestion is if they'd let all cars do so, they would have run out of laps and the title decided behind a safety car.

The allegation is they bent (broke) the rules to clear a route for Max and give him a final shot at Lewis.... on new tyres

There was a crash with 5 or 6 laps to go. The race director brought out a safety car to slow everyone down while the crash is cleared. The crash was cleared with about one lap to go. The problem is that there was several lapped cars, including about 5 lapped cars physically between Max and Lewis that couldn't unlap themselves because of the safety car. There was confusion as to whether the lapped cars could unlap themselves (allowing Max to go right behind Lewis) or not (giving Lewis a 5 car barrier). In the end, they decided to let the 5 cars between Max and Lewis unlap themselves but not the others.

Lewis' team and fans think this is robbery because it helped Max and that all of the lapped cars or none of them should have been let through.

Red Bull and Max fans argue that if all of the cars were made to unlap themselves, it would have taken too long and the whole thing would have been decided by a safety car.
Sorry struggling to understand from googling, what does unlapping mean with regards to the 5 cars between Lewis and Max, they're allowed to go past the safety car before everyone else while Lewis, Max and everyone else wait behind the safety car?

What do you want to happen? That RB just willingly go and give the title to Ham and Mercedes? They did nothing wrong. Why should they be punished?
