F1 2010

I don't know if that's true or not, but it seems right going by you not being able to feel the back of the car.

Race Pro is basically GTR on the PC and those games are very detailed in their physics, so to update the feedback isn't a problem. If Marchi is right, then they have no hope of doing the same with F1.

During one of the development diaries, the lead designer said that they used an "advanced" version of the same engine used in Dirt 2.

For me, that reads as, we've taken the Dirt 2 engine. Designed 12 F1 cars and slapped them on a tarmac based course from Dirt 2.

No worries mate, People can like or dislike it, it won't affect my enjoyment.

Online is where its at for me really so that's why the AI gripes don't bother me too much, although I do agree that they should not be there.

The only thing that stops it being a 9/10 for me is the FF, it ain't upto scratch to really take the driving to the highest level. A patch will hopefully address that.

Are you the one that has a Fanatec wheel? Apparently its quite common amongst users that the FF is poor. They're trying to get it to the same level as the PC apparently.

No have the Ms wheel, the force is pretty good but it just does not give you the more subtle FF when accelarating, breaking, losing traction etc..

The wierd thing is being the ego engine ala dirt. dirt, grid had decent FF.

Oh feck this. Annoying the hell out of me now.

I'm on China, managed to qualify pole in a lotus. Get to race and its wet, I drive out of my skin for 7 laps and manage to build a nice 5-10 second lead over Vettel. Then pretty much the entire grid decides to stop and put on the prime tyres as the track is drying out.

So I wait on track, cruising round waiting for my pit crew to ask me in. I decide to take the iniative 2 laps later and pit myself. What do the fecking idiots put on? Goddamn Inters.

So i'm then out on a drying track with inters while everyone else has primes. Funnily enough, they're all flying past me while i'm struggling for grip.

Frustrated by this I quit. So I put it on just now for another attempt. Corner 2 on lap 1, front right puncture, fair enough if I sit someone or went off track, but I drove fine round the corners not touching a curb. Why is this game so bloody stupid while racing in the rain. It's so damn frustrating.

You can tell them what tyres you want while out on the track I'm sure?

It does feel a bit rubber ball-ish

No, not always. One driving engine isn't the same as another, just as one FPS engine can't do what another can. They aren't just some magic interchangeable thing, if something has been made specifically for one game, there's no guarantee it's suitable for another. A chair made from oak, doesn't magically become a good oak table when you screw a few pieces of balsa wood to it.

Besides, if Dirt is on a central axis point, that wouldn't transfer well to an F1 game plus it's not something that can be changed easily either.

Depends on the engine. Games like Shift were based off a more advanced physics engine and dumbed down, where as this was developed from a very basic engine, designed to appeal to an arcade market.

Since the core engine in this game is based on a central axis point, it will never handle like a real car. Effectively what this means, is that the cars act like a tissue box. The wheels are there for aesthetic purposes only.

They managed it fine for the masses of people enjoying this game. ;) Compared to a part that aren't.

Most games are built on another games engine.

Some people just go looking for faults and over analyse everything. Sometimes you just can't please everybody. The vast majority of people are enjoying this game and having fun, that's what games are designed for.

Hence why when you hit the grass and stop, you can still see the wheels spinning sometimes, this also happens occasionally when they drop the car in the garage

Finally someone talking about the game itself and not how it's made, bugs etc

I almost had the same problem as you yesterday at Hungary. Rained heavily and then it stopped and circuit dried out and everyone went to primes. However luckily I stayed out of the pits altogether and somehow managed to hang on to the lead despite not pitting and Hamilton being on my back for 4 laps

It's called Ego or something like that, and was originally based on the free PS3 Phrye Engine, but they say no code from Phrye is left in it.

Digital Foundry: First up, can we have a bit of history on the EGO tech? The accepted wisdom is that the code is derived from the PhyreEngine, which in itself has evolved significantly over time. How much does EGO still have in common with Phyre, if anything?

Bryan Marshall: At the end of the last generation, Codemasters took a big strategic decision to start coding from fresh for the multi-core (then) next-gen platforms. That meant dumping a lot of mature code we had built up on PS2, Xbox and PC: we knew we had to do something radical for this gen and not be encumbered by the legacy of the past architectures.

We also knew at that stage that the radical new architecture of the PS3 and CELL was going to be tough to develop for and had heard that Sony were developing some of their own libraries called at that time PlayStation Scene Graph (PSSG). It made a load of sense to work closely with those guys in London and really get the most out of the PS3 with their inherent Sony knowledge. We mainly used it for the rendering side, but PSSG, or PhyreEngine as it's now known, has many more features than that.

We diverged at least two games ago and haven't used anything of the PhyreEngine versions but I still believe it offers a great deal for developers looking to get into PS3 development. The Sony guys are also very smart and I definitely recommend working with them. However, things have come on a long way for us and we're now working on a big upgrade and finally losing the last pieces of PSSG.

Performance seems to be similar on both console versions.

Do you not HAVE to pit in the race? I'm not big on all the F1 rules so I don't know, but I assumed from the 'Must use one set of primes and one set of optionals per race' that that meant you have to pit and change to use one set of each per race.

So have you gotten your new steering wheel yet? Sounds like you've improved leaps and bounds. I'm assuming all assists are off?

That's for a dry race. One set of prime and options. However in the wet I din't need to come in. Suti and me both stayed out the entire race and came 3rd and 1st.

They can't force you to go to primes in the rain ;)

All assists are off. Breaking assists depend from race to race. I'm not good enough to drive without breaking assists on all circuits :(

And the race win was a one off. The race before that I finished 24th after being 9th on the final corner of the final lap

Oh and no steering yet. Can't decide on which one. The G25 and 27 and all are rather out of budget right now.

Hows the 360 controller for F1?

I have a logitech rumbleplad 2 for the PC.. playing with a traditional controller and a wheel's totally different. Why not get the Driving Force GT? It's great. I'm using it.

Yeah I'd like to know how to decide what tyres you get to put on.

There are some buttons I've tested which let me change front wing and fuel settings I think.

Telling your crew what tyres you want could be useful. I certainly needed it yesterday even though everything worked out eventually.

Weird qualifying at Spa. Q1 sunny, Q2 heavy downpour and Q3 sunny again?

Anyway qualified 6th and managed to move up to 2nd behind Hamilton and he pitted and I was leading for a lap before I went in. Alonso in 3rd JUST came out ahead of me as i exited the pits and ended up coming 4th.

Next race at Monza...in Q3 was on pole till the end before Alonso went top just as time ended, however I was on my final lap as well and just managed to take pole by 0.002 seconds of Alonso  :D

Sauber offered me a contract but I rejected ofcouse.

Well 3rd try on China in the race and this time I finished the 40% distance (22 laps). Managed to finish 2nd (now that I know how to change tryes, cheers lads). Annoyingly I spun out when entering the pits ala Hamilton, went straight on and almost collected the wall, that allowed my 5 second ish lead to disappear and I came out in 2nd place behind Hamiliton. 10 fast laps later and I was closing in on him and then I went just too deep on a corner and spun around. Managed to limp home in 2nd place but a great race :)

Is there a difference being in the wet? Because on wet tyres in the rain, I just matched my time on dry tyres.

Another facepalm-worthy moment for me.

Must be only you. My times are always 3-4 seconds slower in the rain. The entire field is 3-4 seconds slower.

not happened to me, and the AI sets slower laps in the wet too

Options in the rain? It's bloody hard to drive with options in the rain

Not if you ease off completely on corners, you have to watch your acceleration, it wasn't heavy rain only light but the rest of the guys were on wet and it wasn't raining enough for me to change, plus it was qualifying so I always go options and burn out the fastest laps I can, if it doesn't work then I'll change to wets :D. Plus it was Spa with really long straights.

Spa ONLY has straights. It made it almost impossible for me to catch up and overtake the likes of Vettel, ALonso and Hamilton once they got ahead of me.

That's why I keep options on and hammer out the fastest laps in qualifying, it's all about the qualifying. I qualified 2nd on the grid and was behind Vettel for most of it, I was a second behind him when I pitted after 2 laps as it was only a 9 lap race on 20% I thought sod it I can do 7 laps on primes and pit before anybody else, so I came back out 5th after changing to primes with 7 laps left, quickly made my way back up to 2nd again and was about 4 seconds behind Vettel for 3 laps before he pitted and I made it into first just as he came out, then I held him off all the way.

I qualified 7th on intermediates at Spa. Unluckily for me it din't rain in Q3 but in Q2. Had it rained in Q3 I was surely going to be on pole.

Anyway the race was frustrating. Was 2nd for almost the entire race before Hamilton pitted and then I had a rapid one lap before entering the pits. Came out 4th after the pits and then it was impossible to overtake

I always pit first, always before anybody else. I'd rather get it done first and play catch up when I KNOW nobody else is pitting behind me and holding me up and that they still have to pit and I can go past, rather than go ahead and take the lead to pit later on when they catch you up and risk delays in the pits.

I did that a couple of times but it did not exactly work too well. I ended up coming behind far too many people out of the pits so now I always pit after everyone else.
