I’ve not seen it mentioned anywhere but the most glaring problem I see with this new league if it does go ahead is the fact that the majority of games in the league will be dead rubbers.

If you have 15 teams in the league guaranteed to remain in the league then any team below the top 3 have literally nothing to play for. If you are not close to winning the super league then all your games are meaningless as you have no rewards or punishments based on how you perform.

At least the premier league has Title, champions league spots, Europa league spots, relegation spots. Etc. Majority of teams in the league have something to play for.

This new league threatens to be an utter shambles.

Not if you're American. It's the only thing they know.

Exactly. This thread has lost its head. People will calm down eventually. According to this place all the PL is good for is getting into the CL.

Can we not have a seperate thread for those of us who are calm to have an actual discussion about this? It's seemingly impossible because of the flood of emotional out cries. I'd really like to actually talk about this and weigh up the pros and cons without all the drama and childish tantrums.

Why would they? All the money will be in the super League and they don't need to try in the premiership to get in it again the next year. All incentive is gone.

you think that Man Utd and Liverpool won’t want to be winning the league?

Winning the league and challenging is not about getting into Europe. That’s when the club is chasing 3rd and 4th - it’s about winning the league. There will always be prestige in doing so.

I know you are emotional, but it’s not the death of domestic football. I’m not saying I like the super league, but the reality will be different to the perception that many have this evening.

Anyone think that the European governments will band together and stop this?

Sorry, must have missed it.

As United fan's we want to see our team compete against the best of the best and win, yeah beating Burnley is great but what about that Paul Scholes goal against Barcelona? For the random fan, is Tottenham vs Juventus not a better game than Leipzig vs some random Turkish side? We're talking elite football here, nothing else like this on the planet in terms of ability and prestige and we're part of it.

The money will be reinvested into the club and spent on players/stadium/coaching staff, whatever. Most of it will probably go on transfers as we'll have to pay a SL tax on top of a United tax when we sign a player so most of that money will filter into the leagues anyway.

This is a win for everyone.

First, our history is built on beating domestic teams and winning domestic leagues. We don't sing about winning Super Leagues, we sing about '20 times'.

Second, the money will not be reinvested, as we have shown previously, they will go into the Glazers' pockets and if you believe the opposite, I have a bridge to sell you.

Lastly, if you are part of a competition based on your birthright, we are going back hundreds of years in terms of structure of society. This is nothing to do with what football is meant to be and represents for the everyday man. If football was like this from the beginning, it wouldn't have become the most popular sport in the world.

Frankly, your posts sound like a sales pitch.

PSG is owned by Qatar. Do you think they are in it for the money? I don't think Qatar is going to create any more problems with the WC.
I am surprised at City though.

Why are you surprised. The whole reason behind Citys modern existence can be summed up in one word. Exposure.

As if last year wasn’t crazy enough, now football as we know it is fecked too?

Seriously. What Black Mirror season are we all starring in now?

Absolutely mental news.

heightened emotions. I’m not saying we have to like it, but we will come to terms with it and watch. Let’s see in 12 months time. I bet you will be watching the team regularly as before.

100%. I said this in the other thread but its hard to walk away from a football club regardless of what shit goes on. Believe me as pissed and all as I am at this, when I didn't walk away or stop watching in 09 I never will. I'll moan and stamp my feet but eventually it'll be the new norm.

As a player or manager, why wouldn't you be motivated to win the league anymore? Does that currently happen when we're in the CL? Why is there new focus all of a sudden?

What left to play for in the league when City tops the league with 20 points by christmas?

It was going to happen eventually but this is such a weird situation where none of the direct parties involved in it are exactly good and I feel no sympathy for any of them.

Premier League the loose cannon capitalists they are, whining they’re getting their cut reduced, UEFA the corrupt assholes they are, whining they’re getting their cut reduced. FIFA are the ultimate sketchy organisation for sure especially after the 2022 World Cup debacle. The clubs involved being greedy assholes. Sky in the UK are crying about these rich asshole billionaires despite spending years with their tongues up their asses saying how great it is to have these foreign owners make the league what it is. All of them have contributed to what we see now.

The PL will cave into letting the big 6 competing in the PL in my opinion. The PL sponsors that will jump ship if they ban them will be very noticeable. The PL and the FA need those big 6 a lot more than the big 6 need them.

This. The PL will cave in as they will eventually do a sweet deal that will satisfy both parties. Happens all the time in business.
The PL need the big 6 more than they need the PL. The world is run by those with money (and power) unfortunately which is not right, but it is the cold hard truth.

The ESL will happen eventually.

Does this mean we can sign Sancho, Haaland, Grealish, Varane and Ndidi in the same transfer window now?

We’d easily be able to afford it, but not with the Glazers in charge.

I cannot believe this is happening. Time to support my local non league team.

It will because none of the teams involved will play in the domestic competitions of their country.

Does it? Why? The format supports the domestic calendar, just like the current Champions League does. Do teams in the Champions League just not have the motivation to win their domestic league?

Qualification not required. Do you think we'd care as much about a game vs Liverpool in the league when we play them or another team in the ESL, where the big money is, a few days later. The PL will become utterly dog shit and the level of contempt that has and will be shown towards it will be there for all to see.

@crossy1686 you're so disconnected from reality, it is unreal.

The PL will be worthless. The history and tradition of the game will be gone. We'll be in a competition by default, killing the competition and removing any excitement. This will lose it's shine within a few years as it will become monotonous. You'll never see an underdog go and win it. Us and a few others will be so rich that the smaller PL teams will be left in the dust. Players like Grealish won't play for teams like Villa.

This is just the start too. Eventuality the teams will decide to leave domestic competition as the gap between ESL teams and the rest becomes so big. The other teams probably won't even want us around in the PL, which will be a important as the League Cup after this.
A lot of dooms day talk based on a rant Sky put out this morning. You don't know any of this but this is the way you've chosen to view the whole event.

I don't want players like Grealish to play for Villa, I want him to play for United and if the transfer fees weren't inflated to feck thanks to PSG and City, we'd probably have him now. Once we're playing SL football, Grealish will cost us about £150m. Why's that? SL tax, everyone knows we have the money. What do you think Villa are going to do with that big windfall? fecking burn it? You work out it and then tell me why the league will be weakened.

This is a very melodramatic picture you've painted but none of it is going to happen.

But arsenal are literally doing that now! Jose did it with us in his first season.
Yeh one club doing it is fine and Arsenal are doing it with the aim of getting into the CL. If we had the SL this season then Spurs, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool would probably all just be resting their players.

Or like what. You’re 5th out of the SL and can’t win the league. What is there to play for? Having to fight for European places makes the season so much more exciting.

Look bud, don’t paint with a broad brush. I’m an American and I don’t like it either.

That is good to hear. Only said it to because it seems to cater to the Americans with the NBA format. No racism intended.

Is it true PSG only said no because there was going to be an actual FFP in place to stop them spending like a spaz?

Earlier today, RMC said that for the moment Al Khelaifi is not committing because he is friend with Ceferin. Marseille are the other french club and we don't really know why they haven't accepted yet.

Something people havent thought about yet...

The idea of inviting 5 new clubs to the super league every year is a stupid joke. In a fantasy world where the Super League get their wish for the clubs to continue playing in national leagues. How are you going to invite 5 teams every year to join the Super League and forsake UEFA competitions, when they won't get any permeance in the Super League?!

They'll join the Super League for one season, then get kicked out, and be fecked out of parallel UEFA competitions. Maybe even banned from them forever.

These 5 invited teams are going to end up being shit teams from out of Europe, I guarenfeckingtee it.
Probably because in that season they will get more money than they will get from Uefa in 5

Congrats to all who betted on Villarreal and Rome to reach the EL-finals.

Piss off. The reasons have already been well explained.
First, our history is built on beating domestic teams and winning domestic leagues. We don't sing about winning Super Leagues, we sing about '20 times'.

I will add:

Where IS THE JEOPARDY?
World football and especially European football works in providing excitement based on the basic concept of jeopardy and risk and reward

You win and qualify to face the best
You lose enough and you get relegated

Agreed. If I have to see that "Football Created by the poor, stolen by the rich" tifo again I'm going to lose it.

PSG is owned by Qatar. Do you think they are in it for the money? I don't think Qatar is going to create any more problems with the WC.
I am surprised at City though.

They're in it for the prestige and the ability to sportswash their reputation. That provides the incentive to be involved in the biggest competition.

Exactly. Anyone who watches the NBA understands this. The regular season is utter dogshit, and nobody takes it seriously because 95% of games don't matter.

The entire 18-25 game group stage will be the same.

Rumor is City and Chelsea were told its happening get with the program or be left behind. If you aren't in, you aren't in and they don't want to be left behind. Why else would City sign up to a comp with rules on wages to revenue.
