Do you want the ESL to happen?

People are deluding themselves if they think this won’t be an absolutely massive success if it happens.

It shouldn’t be happening but in 20 years everyone will be in love with this format. Just the way it’s going to be.

Nights like that are what footballs all about. Hell, not performing and not getting to take part in nights like this is in a way what football should be about. I remember back when it was Van Gaals last season and we scored a late ish winner against Watford at home when we were chasing the top four, the feeling was amazing and it was gutting when we didn't make it in the end. With these changes all that is gone, it takes the emotion out of the sport.

They are big games because there is always something at stake.

A place in the final, a cup, whatever.

In a competition where losing is meaningless, there will never be anything at stake.

Losing isnt meaningless

The proposed Super League will have it's own financial fair play rules. I imagine they will be more strictly enforced than the UEFA version.

Doubt it will be that strict. The clubs are making the rules... Why would they make rules that will get them in trouble.

Tough considering United are supposedly leading the charge, measures to curb spending would make sense. They'll probably cap transfers at 20m.

Proper football club, shambolic they weren’t invited and Spurs somehow were.
Boggles the mind. Ajax should have been one of the first names on that shitty list. Ajax could be a real draw with significant investment. Living in Amsterdam, playing for one of the greatest clubs on earth. How would that not be appealing? I'd picking Ajax over Spurs or Arsenal every day of the week.

Not sure I buy this idea that these games will be boring because they happen every year. Like, Chelsea play United, Liverpool and City every year, sometimes multiple times, and they are still watched in massive numbers.

As there are two leagues of 10, they will probably randomise who is in each league as well so you may not play a team for a season or two.

The TV companies would pay a fortune for top class matches between the best teams week in week out, they'd have millions of subscribers all over the world.

At present the intention is to still play the domestic competitions as well, maybe the PL wll be reduced to say 16 teams in the future but if UEFA launch into banning top clubs straight away without thinking very carefully about it, it could destroy the framework of the current leagues and cups anyway.

I fully expect a lot of discussion and some kind of compromise in the end.
I don´t think the Super League could survive in a vacuum. There would not be many matches to watch in the end.

Nope. Will be when its played in the ESL for me though.
Right now its a game because the winner not only get to beat their worse rival, they also get 3 points towards a league title/champions league spot while at the same time making it harder for the rival to do the same.
Would be the same in the ESL.... maybe you should read the competition format. The main issue is the entry criteria

I wonder if the Super League has given any thought to who is actually going to be refereeing the league.

Beacuse it won't be the UEFA refs.

You don't think Refs would come on board if they offered to double their current wages?

They could also hire a load of recently retired refs.

I'd just like to ask those in favor one thing: are you ready to fork over a lot of your tax money for stadiums and other facilities like is common in the US? Or are you cool with the good folks of Manchester being on the hook while the owners claim to not have the money for it or threaten to leave the community otherwise if they don't get what they want from the city ? Because that is exactly what happens in the US all the damn time.

Not qualifying for the knockouts. Not winning the trophy.

Oh, boo fecking hoo, you didn't qualify this year, but don't worry you'll be back next. Here is €300m for taking part. Don't worry about your domestic league position, we'll make sure we keep out those pesky teams like Leicester who are in all objective measures better than you.

So in theory they could change the name of Manchester United and move the club out of Manchester if this goes through right?
Yeah, they can do a full-on relocation and rebrand if they want to, and they can go as far as making everyone forget about the previous team's history whilst operating in their current position. This has already happened in the NBA with the Seattle SuperSonics, a big basketball team that was then relocated to Oklahoma City and rebranded as the Oklahoma City Thunder. Nowadays, ask any relatively new or young NBA fan, and they wouldn't know that OKC was previously the Seattle SuperSonics.

Genuine european cup history too.

As I said this morning, Nottingham Forest have more European Cups than Chelsea, Man City, Spurs and Arsenal combined.

'European super league' my backside.

And even more when the owners think it's more convenient to relocate the clubs close to London because star players like it better there and it's closer to airports to play games in China.

Enjoy your London Red Devils vs Hayes Scousers.

Does anyone know if financial fair play would exist is the proposed super league?

Not necessarily... Depends where the teams are in the mini league when the fixture takes place. They may have both qualified for the knockouts for example.

But its more so the PL matches that will matter less if neither are in a title race.

Your arguing a point I dont disagree with. Way too much hysteria going on. Argue the points that matter.

Hey, maybe Chelsea will keep a manager longer than two seasons if we don't run the risk of missing a big pay day? Swings and roundabouts and all that.

Well do you imagine a scenario where United, Liverpool, Real, Barca, Juve etc. would be happy with City spending 2-3 times what they can?

It was in the press release yesterday, founding members have to agree to a spending framework to gain entry. Seems pretty obvious who that's aimed at to keep them in check.

I agree, but nor could the PL survive without the big clubs which is why I think some kind of compromise will be reached. UEFA threatening to ban clubs or players is not the right way to go about it imo.
