I really don’t know how I feel about this, I keep changing my mind, the main thing that I think is unfair is no relegation, all this does is cement these clubs as the supposed best and thats that.

I’m all for reform and all for potentially ending or changing the champions league if it’s a sensible suggestion, this doesn’t feel right.

Those NFL games played in London are a preview of what will happen here. Expect to see plenty of these games played away from the home grounds of their teams.

Money was the driving force behind the PL forming in 92, that was a literal break away league but now we want to replace the CL with a different European competition it's a problem?
The PL still had the same structure with promotion/relegation and clubs were inherited from the Football League. Just a rebranding.
This one picks clubs based on commercial viability instead of sporting merit and it's a closed off competition.

Just thinking about the fact there will be no relegation, no massive underdogs and nothing to fight for other than winning the league - does this open the door to even more attack minded football?

Possibly one small benefit in a sea of shit.

I still refuse to believe this will actually happen. The universally negative reaction will cause at least a few of the twelve to get cold feet and pull out.
Needs to be a reaction from the players and managers.

Think they expected it. They prepared this for years. This will go ahead.Covid accelerated it, but i am sure they wanted to
Implement it in the coming years anyway.

Sorry Piers but to Arsenal and all the other clubs, supporters like him are just "legacy fans". They don't care about you, never have and never will.

The Super League is a disgrace and makes me sick to my stomach what it's going to do to football.

Not a problem. Except I actually work in football and I'm not starving myself. No doubt I will be tasked with covering this shit house at some point.

But seeing as you are still trying to wind people up at this time..

@Grinner you love banning people that disagree with you, never has a poster been eager for your hammer

Please, please, pretty please ban that WUM.

That was my initial thought but with the amount of money at stake, I don't think they will care.

I know the lack of relegation/promotion is a sticking point for some but I'm pretty confident we'll see some kind of process introduced at some point. This competition won't last long if the most popular clubs aren't playing in it

Government statement at 530pm alledgedly. Hope this gets nipped in the bud legally. Gov needs to look into putting in legal oversight for english football. Feck this american billionaires and their stupid nfl style ideas.

Like the Club World Cup or the European Super Cup right now?
Those aren't "league" games, where teams play home and away. It is not comparable at all. I'm not convinced you've ever been to a game in your life the way you'r going on here,

That would be fine if we are not all kicked out of the PL. Then it isn't.
@DomesticTadpole Even if we somehow stayed in the EPL, this is going to make a mockery of that competition.
Let's say on a Wed evening Man Utd have a game against Barca and the winner of that will get top 4 of this superleage and get $ prize money, whatever amount is on offer which I imagine is high.

What do you think Man Utd will do if they have a premier league game a few days before, which is now worth a lot less because there will be no champions league places on the line. Will they a) go full strength for the integrity of the game or b) play a second string and place more emphasis on the midweek game.

It's weird football isn't it? It's the only industry where an owner is expected to buy a club and then completely empty their pockets every summer and get absolutely nothing out of it.

And if that was the case at Manchester United I would agree with you. But it is not.

They'll either have their own streaming service for it, or are working with Amazon.
It would have to be Amazon. No significant amount of fans will sign up for a streaming service. If they plan on relying on that income, it’s not going to yield much.

Quite the drastic negotiation tactic, though?
It's a drastic situation for the big clubs. They've lost income, they're going to take a massive hit during the World Cup. They've had no useful concessions from UEFA on things like the Euros and they're not getting much out of the CL reorganisation.

It's intended as a threat. With any luck it will rebound on them and they end up having to organise an intertoto cup tournament in 2022, played outside UEFA territory, as a reward.

I'm intrigued who they think it's going to buy the TV rights though. Obviously someone has promised them big money - who is it?

What I don't understand is the 5 teams being invited only on 'Merit'. Does it mean there's a risk that those 5 teams could be booted out if they don't generate enough money?

Considering that joining the ESL probably means expulsion from UEFA and possibly FIFA competitions, it is a massive risk to take for those 5 invited teams.

You don't join a cash cow for a year and risk your entire club's future after that.

Uefa was messing with CL all the time, watering it down and those plans for 2024 are ridiculous. If only a middle ground could have been made. Now these clubs, United included, are braking away and football will be a lot different as we know it and far, far worse.

Then again some elitist stuff I'm reading here by the few posters who are pro super league is astonishing and vomit inducing. As if a club from Ukraine or my country, Croatia, shouldn't be allowed to participate in CL cause the big guns must play the whole season and if they end up 5th they dont go to the same competition. Its called Champions league anyway, a cup in which only the champions would participate and not only English, Italian and Spanish champions. Dont get me started on Tottenham too. Them above Dortmund, Porto, Benfica, Marseille and so on.
There's no pros about this league whatsoever.

But as I said Uefa made their own bed and they cant take the moral ground. They messed with the CL, EL all the time, trying to fix something that isnt broken. Now we'll get to see the same clubs playing week in week out and it will all become boring in 6 months or less. All cause of the money and greed involved in this. I dont expect Uefa to punish these clubs and even if they somehow do punish them I dont expect any of the 3 leaguse to kick the clubs out. On the other hand domestic leagues will devalue cause other for the title or staying in the league there wont be anything to play for. No CL places and clubs which will be out of the fight for the title will rest the players for the SL.

And cant believe fekin Leipzig will be invited too. Apparently.

All in all it's horrible but tbh it's been coming for a while. There has been too much football anyway and with this league it will all become more soulless and boring. And if they try to ship out games to other continents out of Old Trafford for example more it will be even more disastrous.

Fifa already made a week stance on this so when all the dust settles I dont think there will be any meaningful punishments for the clubs involved.

To end this rant I'm saddened and extremely angry that United is involved in this. As someone said we've been doing all right, Ole has brought back the joy to the club and progress has been made in and around the team. And for what? To play in some league in which our position is secured with no competition and no danger of going out. Madness, absolute madness.

If we're playing in both these leagues we'll essentially need two squads, will there be a second string? How will the players adapt between the competitions? Fred has always been good in the CL but shaky in the PL. Would have have been signed to play mostly SL games? What's the squad registration size going to be? So many things we don't know yet.

Plus the one gets played at a neutral venue in Europe and the other, as the name suggest, world. And these are glorified friendly games anyway. The Super League is a complete different beast that replaces UCL.

The premier league are a different entity to Uefa all together. England can still have a premier league alongside a super league - eventually though I imagine domestic leagues will be marginalised and the super league will become the big thing.

You are correct that they are but aren't they also tied to UEFA? So basically they (local associations) are ruled by uefa's terms and conditions so that they can compete in European cups.

Super league is a replacement for the champions league not for any domestic league. I don't think it would marginalise the Premier league but it would give a lot of money to a little subgroup of teams. This obviously hurts the uefa format. No Real, Barcelona or Man Utd suddenly your value drops by 50%

It's funny because this this a billion pound industry the rich and powerful are just trying to make sure they keep milking this cow and fans are kind of left out. Nobody gives a shit about supporters but obviously they all come out advocating they're safeguarding us. Ultimately bullshit.

Nope.

The premier league is uefa affiliated, that is what allows winners entry into champions league and so on.

To keep that, United and the rest won't be able to be part of the competition.

Maybe they will have a raffle?

These lot has no understanding of football.
If this was discussed 20 years ago, would Atletico Madrid be considered? City? Chelsea? Who are these people to decide Spurs belong to the most elite of the football rather than Ajax? These idiots think like it is a superhero movie. They think football just like they think Avengers. But, ever since I started watching football, 2019 Ajax has been one of the teams that I enjoyed watching the most. I loved how they fearlessly attacked Real Madrid. It won't be half fun to watch those boring Atletico Real Madrid games over and over again.

I will protest it. I will not watch it. It is disgusting. The arrogance and misunderstanding of these people are beyond belief.

This is being touted as a replacement for the Champions League. The reality is that we'll get kicked out of the English Premiership and the Super League will be all we have left. No Premiership, no English cups, no matches against anyone other than the "founding members". It makes me feel quite sick.
