Erik ten Hag vs Sancho | Sancho back in full training

Presumably ETH is running out of ideas to motivate Sancho and has resorted to trying to light a fire in him. It works with some players, I’ve heard someone like Rooney say that he played better when the manager would criticise him but they seem to have very different mentalities. One has the “I’ll show you” attitude while one has the “How dare you, I’m telling on you” attitude.

I think it’s a risk that has backfired from the manager in this case BUT Sancho frankly hasn’t done anything since he got here. You could argue Antony plays even when he’s out of form but there is a difference between the two. When Antony plays, he has a fire in his belly, a willingness to get stuck in and a determination. Sancho is just so meek. He doesn’t look interested, he loses every 50/50 involving physical contact, not because he’s small and weak but because he’s literally scared of getting stuck in. You can see it in his body language, he pulls out of every 50/50 and as soon as a defender gets an arm out to fend him off he gives up.

My patience has run out with him and while his talent is that of a top level player, his mentality never will be. Time to sell!

This is poor man management if you ask me. It seems to me ten hag doesn't have great interpersonal skills as he's fallen out with Ronaldo and now Sancho. Antony had a stinker against Wolves and never matched the required level of a manchester player in that game, then was selected against spurs.

When you keep demonstrating favouritism there is going to be inevitable fall-outs from players who are waiting on the wings for their chances. We need to call foul play out... whether its the player, or whether its the manager

Probably a loan to dortmund with us paying half his wages is incoming. Hell I would have the club pay his full wages to get him back to Germany, he will hopefully play well and we get some of our money back.

I'm sure there's a followup coming.

The other thing to point out is that Sancho said:

Don't believe everything you read!

This only makes sense if he read the comments and never watched the clip. I think that stretches credulity, and only makes sense to internet fans like ourselves who consume football as entertainment through our web browsers. People in this thread are extrapolating from their direct experiences, rather than approaching it from Sancho's.

Sancho would have watched and heard everything his manager said in the 3 hours between the press conference and him hitting the send button. If his tweet had been directed straight at Ten Hag, he would have said, "Don't believe everything you hear!" because that's where he'd have been coming from.
I honestly don’t know how you can be so sure of it and going all out to defend him. Even giving him benefits of doubt, he has been having attitude problems in his previous club too. The way I see it’s more of a cumulative attitude/mentality issue rather than just one off misunderstanding. But yeh let’s see if he has any follow up coming later.

Those saying get him away to Saudi, the Saudis are only buying good players or those with are/were big names, Sancho doesn't fir either. Not sure what the contract is, but even if he is let go on a free, United going to be paying a large chunk of those wages.

What should EtH have replied / done then?

1.Put him on bench despite not being happy with whatever lacked in training? That will cement mediocrity

2.lie to media about reason? That will create toxicity and mediocrity.

Perhaps he could have said a simple we are overstacked and needed to rotate and leave it at that.

He is lifting £350k like a world class player but I feel Sancho is fragile, entitled and somewhat of a letdown for basically trying and in essence retiring from world football moment he signed that mammoth contract.

Guy was busting covid rules left and right and had massive disciplinary issues at Dortmund. He looked more lively first game this season giving some hope of a turnaround, but guessing he maxed out after that.

I have a feeling he is driven by good vibes and strikes me as a conflictavoidant type of player and can only perform his best in a "teen garden, non grownup team" and mostly vs lax opposition in a setting like Dortmund.

I speculate he couldn't handle the looming City demands and hierarchy of adult football, but people lauded that move with lot of superimposed wishful thinking to say it was a choice made out of strength of charachter and willingness to leave a top club to play but more and more it seems a choice to leave behind and escape ever rising demands. He never once pushed for us either during those ridiculous transfer days, just went on those tabloid headline generating curfewbuster parties risked his team to get shut down in case of positive tests just to enjoy himself. We were the easy option where he felt comfy with his known friends and the pay was good.

He clearly can't handle it here at United in a high demand setting under ETH either. I think he has a non world class mindset to pair a world class salary and that's a mistake for the club to carry. For all faults in Antony and Maguire, they drop their head and stay silent like adults and work it trough giving their (arguably lacking, but nevertheless) best efforts.

For whatever reason the ever failing Sancho doesn't handle pressure well and adding drama vs fans or coach (whatever of the two) is not a good look, that much is clear after a few years. Wish he was sold, but as usual we depreciate assets and overpay to tank any value.

I don't like it when managers call players out in public. However I don't think anyone can disagree that ETH has been incredibly patient with Sancho given everything that happened last season. And Sancho's performances on the pitch frequently show a lack of effort and desire, so it's hard not to believe ETH on this.

I think it just goes to show what the scale of the challenge is for ETH at this club.

I guess ETH could have used the usual 'light knock' excuse to allow him to save face but Sancho has overreacted to a pretty mild comment

Sancho's reply makes him look like a massive crybaby. What a wet wipe.

EtH has generally been supportive of Sancho, gave him all that time off when he needed it, was complimentary on his return etc...

He's been signed for massive money and is on huge wages. He's not delivering. He's nowhere near expectations. Own it.

Wouldn't expect any different from someone who plays like a massive fanny on the pitch

Honestly if we can £40-50m for him from Saudi that would be phenomenal business. Never wanted him in the first place and he's looked happy to collect the £350k a week without putting any effort in
I don't usually do this, but

£100m at Sancho before anything else. I think that kid will become world class, has it all, touch, dribbling, passing, and above all great game intelligence. Would be a steal even at that price.

I'm not sure of it, and I'm not defending him. I just don't want to character assassinate him based on a single, easy to misinterpret tweet. I'm only posting possible explanations to try and calm things down a bit.

I don’t want to see people taking Sancho’s side like they haven’t seen the level of performances his put out there for 2 seasons.

That's the end for Jadon and by posting that message he obviously knows it. £60mill from Saudi?

I hate this attitude.

It's possible to be a bad footballer without also being a bad person, and vice versa.

People should be taking the side of the truth, not the side that fits their hopes for the next transfer window.

Do fans deserve to know of a player is half arsing it in training? Why should that be kept secret?

Ten hag doesn't even have social media and I bet you he doesn't give a sh*t about what Sancho said.

I was impressed with Sancho this start of the season, hope he can kick on using his feet not kick off using that gob.

There's no way he'd go to the Saudi league at 23 years old.

There'd be a dozen clubs in Europe who would be desperate for him if he left and could pay him a big wage.

We're not talking about the mental health of men in general in society ffs. We're talking about one person who we don't even know has mental health issues.

The point is that if there is a mental issue for Sancho then he should leave the club. United isn't a rehab centre, it's a football club. He has been given a lot of leeway already and frankly doesn't deserve any more based on what he has done for the team.

Wow......

Nah. There'd be a few EL tier clubs who'd be mildly interested in taking him on loan, if we paid half his wages

Because it creates a circus around the club and god knows we have enough nonsense going on in the press. I'd prefer the manager to just tell the player to his face he isn't playing til he gets his act together. Just because fans want to know, doesn’t mean they need to know.

Imagine if this was Mourinho throwing his players under the bus in public...
Apart from Shaw who proved him wrong Mourinho was proved right on Pogba and Martial.

Funny how both played well with something to prove after Jose left then just went back to old ways soon after the buzz wore off.

Remember a few years ago everyone was talking about the big three players at Dortmund and who would get them.

City got Haaland who's going to be smashing records, Real get Bellingham who's firing in five goals in four games already, and we get the guy who has to go away to special training camps and argues with the manager on social media.

Mourinho was spiteful and vicious in the way he'd go about it. Ten Hag is simply stating facts in a perfectly reasonable manner. This is after being incredibly patient with Sancho last season

ETH is as meek as Sancho himself. I bet this is already resolved from both sides as we discuss.

On a side note, I'm sure that neither Ten Hag nor Sancho will succeed here.

I did wonder yesterday where we would be right now if we'd just given Jose the money we've given Ten Hag...

Said it from the starts, ETH doesn't look to have the balls to take certain decisions even if, in a few cases he did.

Sancho needs to play elsewhere and restart his career otherwise he'll be a Palace player very soon.

It looks like EtH is deflecting from the poor start. Or it could be frustrations from the transfer window.

This club is a monster that can consume players and managers alike. Only those who have managed or played for Real or Barca fully understand the nature of the relentless pressure.

We have seen it before and managers and players start doing and saying the strangest things. Its not gonna get any easier if the players feel they dont trust the manager. Whilst he might be right, nobody likes to be publicly thrown under the bus, especially when previously dealt with others differently.

Others had the luxury of 'we deal with things internally'. Im not pro Sancho or anti Erik but I can see both not seeing the season out....

This club is rudderless and with the off field on goings, I cant remember it be this bad.

Sancho has been shit for 2 years, he's never shown anything but glimpses of form. He's more trouble than he's worth at this point and we should have sold him in the summer.

But at the same time Ten Hag does this thing where he doesn't give a shit about players he didn't sign and he throws them to the wolves with his tactics (that they can't do) and his comments, instead of realising that you have to get the best out of all the players at your disposal if you're going to be successful.

Not better, because Jose wanted Maguire and also got Lukaku to replace Ibra.

Then proceeded to push for a finished Sanchez that killed our wage structure.

Jose was finished and deservedly stop getting backed.

Sancho is pretty much done here with ETH as manager. Need to move him soon

Tough to judge without knowing what he was like in training, but obviously we should have sold him this summer, even if it was only for 30M or so and used the money elsewhere, like on a backup #9 or a young CB or CM prospect.

Got Shaw going I guess

Most likely how he is on the pitch
