Erik ten Hag | Currently unemployed

How is Ten Hag regarded in Holland? Is he seen as the next great one, etc, or is the hype around him more external?
The next great one, he will be one of the greatest Ajax managers of all time.

Watched the 2nd half. No wonder our players prefer poch. Too much running, pressing football for them.

Anyone know the reason for the sudden collapse of Ajax? They seemed to have steamrolled everyone in the first half of the season, hammering everyone in the Champions League and only conceding something ridiculous like 3 goals in the Eredivisie.

Now they lost to one of the "easier" sides in the Champions League, and are struggling to keep clean sheets in the League.

As a United fan, I'm hoping it's the same effect as what happened to City and Pellegrini when Pep was basically announced half way through the season - maybe the Ajax players have been told EtH is off?
Ive watched them a fair bit this season and yes, they’ve been much more inconsistent since around January. Every time I’ve watched them though I notice that they miss a lot of chances, and that was bound to catch them out at some point.
In today’s game in the second half they created enough to score 6 but fluffed chances.
They play similarly to Peps City, creating lots of triangles and overlaps down the wings. Also, he likes them to get the ball into the feet of the number 9 to hold it up and then lay off to runners.
Ultimately, with the fairly average players they have at the back, they were never going to keep up the mental defensive record they had til recently and when you couple that with missing chances, that’s why they have gone off the boil a bit.
Also, I’m sure the Ten Hag United links have gotten into some of the players heads a bit.

The derby games against city and Liverpool will be a great watch when we have ten Hag. They won’t be moaning about us parking the bus then.

Spoke with few Dutch last month, they say he's the real deal.
It's like learning about a manager in reverse; generally we see them grow from the league outward, but I think most of us have been enthralled by the CL and are learning about him as a whole beyond that competition. Very interesting to hear how he's perceived from the Dutch perspective.

Wow! OK, that's quite some praise!

He’s my preference for sure. But if it’s a true about the players preferring one over the other then it just adds even more reason to go for him or someone else.

Feck pandering to the players.

That's nonsense, the vast majority of players know neither of them outside of watching their teams on TV.

Thanks for in depth write up!

I did have a quick look at their defence, and they're all quite small! None of them over 6' - hope he doesn't assume a 5'9 central defender can work in the EPL if he does come.

Attacking until the end. Not settling for a draw. Giving your all.
Exactly what we have been lacking for years…

Doubt it. But I can see him prefering someone like Bailly over Maguire.

Feel like the ones complaining are likely ones who won’t be here long to be fair. Let them say whatever they want, it should have 0% impact on who the board appoint.

Probably because the Dutch play a lot better football then most English teams. There not all about lump ball into the box, so they can afford to have smaller defenders if most of there football is played on the floor.

Yeah I didn't criticise any league, not sure why you're taking a needless swipe, all I said was I hope he's pragmatic enough to know that the EPL has varying styles of football, which makes it necessary to have tall defenders to counter the likes of Burnley as well as being good on the ball to be able to beat the press of City etc.

I wasn’t taking a swipe mate, probably came out wrong. Was just saying like the Dutch probably don’t have teams like Burnley so they can have smaller defenders, obviously your still going to need tall defenders though for set pieces and stuff. If we get ten Hag though he’ll probably adapt to the league and work out what type of defenders we need. Preferably tall defender but someone comfortably on the ball to play his possession based game.

It probably can. Who thought playing with bombing full backs and a ridiculous high line like City would work?

Fair enough, I wasn't really defending anything here either, the "best" league is always subjective and the bolded is what I'm hoping for, I just remember LvG being hellbent on getting a left footed central defender at all costs, even coming close to getting Vermaelen from Arsenal.

@AjaxCunian not sure your example is the same as having two central defenders who are short (5'9 and 5'10) as short defenders like that would get targeted by the likes of Burnley.

Even if he is wanted will he want United?

I hope so
We’re still one of the top clubs in world football, the financial offer will be substantial, and the chance to lead United to the first league title since Fergie left and to compete against the very best will all be very lucrative to someone like ten Hag. If we’re not hesitant he’ll come.

no bother. If he comes he might look to bring in mazraoui at right back but other than that I don't think we'll see much change in our back 4 next season. would like if we brought in a new centre back but I'd say we'll prioritize other positions.

Just as the huge spaces City leave would be targeted by everyone playing counter attacks?

They use these tactics in a way that you can barely exploit it. If Burnley barely has the ball because the opponent is too good at keeping it, how much can they target these defenders? They'd have to play a brand of football they don't / can't in order to achieve that.

Bayern Munich is more likely to be able to do that than Burnley as they have some taller players in midfield/offence.

It's a shame he's a Raiola client, but he would definitely be a big upgrade at RB, if EtH or anyone could get Maguire to rediscover his form as a competent ball playing Central defender we should be okay.

@AjaxCunian that's completely different, City use that set up as they can use sneaky fouls to stop the counter attacks, whereas any throw in close to our box or a corner would be disastrous with tiny Central defenders.

I do hope we can get to a stage where we can dominate the ball most of the time, but that will take time, and during that time if we buy tiny CB's then we're going to get roasted.

Could this be completed this week? Ten Hag to united. Got the international break for us to talk to him and offer him a deal. Pochettino saying he wants to still win the CL with psg surely means he’s been told we no longer want him?

I don’t think anything will be signed and completed until the season is officially over. But I think in 2 weeks it will become clear who the next manager will be with leaks to all the media outlets saying it’ll be signed after the seasons over.

My point isnt that it would work next week, the point is that the Premier League isnt a different sport where very innovating playing styles can't work.

Many thought Guardiola's football wouldnt work in the PL, but in reality, he has dominated like none other.

Playing style matters now more than ever, I can't believe there are people who followed football over the last decade and still can't see that.

Just look at Barca with Xavi today.
