Erik ten Hag | Currently unemployed

I never understand posts like these. Do you know the bloke personally?
why you dont understand? It is not very unlikely. Plus his affection to Munich as a club is huge, have you heard him talk about Munich the club and the city? he loves that place. I just wish the club has already sealed everything with him and the only thing left is official announcement that will be left to after the end of the season.

Journalists are already talking like this is done and dusted and talking about the summer transfers.

Erik should focus on a decent CB first.

Timber next to Varane would be a hell of an improvement.

Can't say I'm excited nor disappointed. I will get excited when I see actual evidence of the manager being backed to perform his job.

While CB is a problem, we desperately need a striker (imagine Ronaldo and Cavani leave), a midfielder or two and fullbacks. All of these are more important positions imo.

I’d be interested to know what he plans to do with Donny, ship him off permanently or bring him back for a number 6 role

No way he ships him off surely. Will be very interesting to see what he does with Donny.

Am I the only person on the CAF who is slightly underwhelmed with this appointment? It looks like the Glazers have gone with the cheapest, easiest option as incoming manager, instead of getting the best candidate. He wants to move on from Ajax, we are quite friendly with them as a club due to VDS and he has a low release clause, whereas getting Poch from PSG would be harder due to a higher release clause. It is basically the Glazer MO to do everything on the cheap. That's not to say Ten Hag is not a good coach but I think the clear preference for him over Poch is debatable.

He's coming from a league where Ajax have a spending power advantage over the rest of their rivals and inevitably are in the title mix every year. In addition, the club has a good football structure that makes it easier for him to just focus on coaching. It's not as if he was Van Gaal and won the Eredivisie with AZ Alkmaar. He had a great run in the champions league but still managed to lose to Spurs at home plus there seems to be a lack of a Plan B in his football strategy. Hence him getting caught out against Benfica recently. He's obviously a Guardiola lite type of coach, having worked with him at Bayern Munich. I still think there's lots of debate of whether he is able to come into UTD and display the leadership that is required for any manager of this club. Unfortunately, due to the Glazers and lack of football acumen at board level, any manager at UTD has to do a lot more than coach. Managing at UTD is a bigger job than just coaching and probably one that may be bigger than him. Whilst there is some improvement in structure with Murtough and Fletcher, both are new in their roles and Murtough in particular, was part of the football structure that has made some pretty poor coaching hires and recruitment decisions.

Whilst I'm not saying Poch is the best coach out there, I feel he has a resume where he would've been able to come in and command respect from the players. He has worked with owners like Levy and the structure at PSG, so knows how to manage upwards and downwards, he's also worked with a Director of Football so the reasons given that only ETH can work under this is slightly perplexing. Poch has also been competitive against the likes of Pep and Klopp at Spurs with a low net spend. The job at UTD is pretty much what was required when he first came into Spurs. I believe he would have got us challenging, maybe not winning the title with Pep and Klopp around but if you look at his record at Spurs, he was constantly in the top 4. Whereas with ETH, its either gonna be an epic success or massive failure. The track record of Dutch coaches in the EPL is not great, if we look at De Boer as an example of someone who did well at Ajax and really struggled. The way the club is at the moment, we really need to get this coaching hire right as if ETH fails in 2-3 years time, where would that leave us? 6th/7th and sinking fast with probably an improving Newcastle another club to compete with for the top 6. Plus we really need to build up the first team coaching staff and Poch already comes with a team whereas ETH will still have to sort out his coaching staff.

I feel there should've been a fairly balanced debate around the two candidates as there are a lot of pros and cons for both, it's not as clear cut as it seems to appear. It looks like the Glazers went with a cheap appointment that was popular with the fans. This does not bode well. However I will still support ETH fully as UTD manager and hope he succeeds, but I have some reservations about this incoming appointment.

@amadeus .. have you opened a second account?

I highly doubt it would be made official since he still has a team to manage till the end of the season, no? I mean, everyone would know it, and it wouldn‘t stop any discussions about next season to take place. But just out of respect for Ajax.

I hope they also back him the other way by letting players go.

We need to be ruthless. Anyone that doesn’t want to be part of the new era is welcome to leave. Otherwise shut the feck up and get your head down and work harder than you ever have.

Is it me or this is more important than who we sign?

Its been to many years where managers are forced to play players they dont want at the club.

E.g. If Rashford does not suit ETH then forget his brand, sell him, not only does it send a message to the fans that its a change, it sends a massive message to the players, that you need to buy into this manager, no more player power.

Eth should buy Frenkie but I have low hopes of Barca selling him :(

Not sure this has happened at all. Big players that the manager may not quite fancy are being played because they are still better than the others I think.

We’ve had Rashford, Pogba, Sanchez, Shaw left put of the team many times. But ultimately, a manager would never write them off altogether because we will still need their residual quality because the others are typically all effort and no ability.

It has happened. Jose didn't want Shaw and Martial. That is a fact.

The players you have mentioned being left out is one thing however; it stops the manager signings players in that position.

Ole had Lukaku who he had to play on the right, was stuck with McFred because there were no other options.

A manager not fancying a player he didn’t buy is normal. But he was never forced to play anyone. That is a fact. Martial and Shaw were sidelined. And Lukaku was sold.

That is my point though. If Ten Hag does not fancy a player, he should be allowed to leave.

Martial and Shaw were sidelined but Jose was not allowed to bring Perisic because we had Martial. I dont know what you are arguing on?

I said If he doesnt fancy a player we should not force him to keep the player.

You said we were forcing managers to play players they don’t want to. And we didn’t. And while Jose did not sign Perisic, he did sign Sanchez.

A manager that doesn't fancy a player should be told to do one until he proves that he is worth anything. Interestingly no serious club just get rid of players that a manager doesn't fancy, it has to make sense which is why City didn't get rid of Aguero and Bayern told Van Gaal that they would sign Neuer regardless of his opinion.

Shortlists were drawn up regardless of who the manager was going to be.

I'm not surprised with the names we're being linked with. I said in this thread the other day that we'll spend more than people were thinking.

We're likely to get rid of nearly £2m a week off the wage budget this summer, possibly more, that's a possible £100m saving a year.
