Am I the only person on the CAF who is slightly underwhelmed with this appointment? It looks like the Glazers have gone with the cheapest, easiest option as incoming manager, instead of getting the best candidate. He wants to move on from Ajax, we are quite friendly with them as a club due to VDS and he has a low release clause, whereas getting Poch from PSG would be harder due to a higher release clause. It is basically the Glazer MO to do everything on the cheap. That's not to say Ten Hag is not a good coach but I think the clear preference for him over Poch is debatable.
He's coming from a league where Ajax have a spending power advantage over the rest of their rivals and inevitably are in the title mix every year. In addition, the club has a good football structure that makes it easier for him to just focus on coaching. It's not as if he was Van Gaal and won the Eredivisie with AZ Alkmaar. He had a great run in the champions league but still managed to lose to Spurs at home plus there seems to be a lack of a Plan B in his football strategy. Hence him getting caught out against Benfica recently. He's obviously a Guardiola lite type of coach, having worked with him at Bayern Munich. I still think there's lots of debate of whether he is able to come into UTD and display the leadership that is required for any manager of this club. Unfortunately, due to the Glazers and lack of football acumen at board level, any manager at UTD has to do a lot more than coach. Managing at UTD is a bigger job than just coaching and probably one that may be bigger than him. Whilst there is some improvement in structure with Murtough and Fletcher, both are new in their roles and Murtough in particular, was part of the football structure that has made some pretty poor coaching hires and recruitment decisions.
Whilst I'm not saying Poch is the best coach out there, I feel he has a resume where he would've been able to come in and command respect from the players. He has worked with owners like Levy and the structure at PSG, so knows how to manage upwards and downwards, he's also worked with a Director of Football so the reasons given that only ETH can work under this is slightly perplexing. Poch has also been competitive against the likes of Pep and Klopp at Spurs with a low net spend. The job at UTD is pretty much what was required when he first came into Spurs. I believe he would have got us challenging, maybe not winning the title with Pep and Klopp around but if you look at his record at Spurs, he was constantly in the top 4. Whereas with ETH, its either gonna be an epic success or massive failure. The track record of Dutch coaches in the EPL is not great, if we look at De Boer as an example of someone who did well at Ajax and really struggled. The way the club is at the moment, we really need to get this coaching hire right as if ETH fails in 2-3 years time, where would that leave us? 6th/7th and sinking fast with probably an improving Newcastle another club to compete with for the top 6. Plus we really need to build up the first team coaching staff and Poch already comes with a team whereas ETH will still have to sort out his coaching staff.
I feel there should've been a fairly balanced debate around the two candidates as there are a lot of pros and cons for both, it's not as clear cut as it seems to appear. It looks like the Glazers went with a cheap appointment that was popular with the fans. This does not bode well. However I will still support ETH fully as UTD manager and hope he succeeds, but I have some reservations about this incoming appointment.
