Erik ten Hag | Currently unemployed

Shortlists were drawn up regardless of who the manager was going to be.

I'm not surprised with the names we're being linked with. I said in this thread the other day that we'll spend more than people were thinking.

We're likely to get rid of nearly £2m a week off the wage budget this summer, possibly more, that's a possible £100m saving a year.

Whoever Erik wants we should fully be going all in for, however also need to ensure the backup targets are the same level.

Tbf one of the greatest defender ever is only 175cm. Height =/ aerially dominant but sure it helps.

For every one Cannavaro Michael Reiziger, there are thousands of those defenders with similar stature who get their collective asses whipped every match.

We will, I've no doubts about that and I also think he'll use a few academy players also next season.

Sounds crazy but I think he'll look closely at Galbraith during pre season, I can see him liking his attributes. Then of course Garner and Mejbri, they've both got a chance of bulking up the numbers.

Could see Garner staying at Forest if they go up

You said we were forcing managers to play players they don’t want to. And we didn’t. And while Jose did not sign Perisic, he did sign Sanchez.

Obviously that doesn't mean he was told play him or you are sacked.

Thats not how it works.

When a player is there, Martial and a manager wants his type of LW to run down the wing, track back and cross the ball, he is not allowed to sign him because he was not allowed to sell Martial, he manager has no option but to play the players.

What else is he going to do? Play a LB at LW? Forcing someone isnt saying play him, its backing him into a corner so he has to play the player.

Once you are backed into that position, you cannot play the style you want? Do you get that?

Another example, Ole had worked to play a certain way, started the season with Greenwood / Martial up top Then we sign Ronaldo, who changed how the manager wanted to play, he has prepared 3 seasons to play a certain way, whether you liked it or not, he had a way with Martial and Greenwood. The club threw him Ronaldo, deal with it.

Good point. When you hire a manger you hire the style of play you cannot force fit them to a certain 'DNA' and 'Way of play'. And support the manager with players that suit his style of play which means moving a few folks on. Now in hindsight, moving marital and shaw on at that time would have been great business!

Its a common misconception from fans thinking spending £150m means a manager is backed. Which is why my initial point was, backing a manager means letting go of players that the club might feel they have to build around them.

Do we think if we go for a technical manager with possession football, Rashford fits in? I doubt it, his best football has always come on the counter. So if Ten Hag wants to get rid of him, he should be sold regardless of his stature.

That is real backing, not spending £100m on player. our squad is full of potential or maybe players that can do a job. McFred, AWB, Dalot, Shaw, Rashford, Lingard, Pogba, Donny.

If we think Ten Hag is the guy, we are better of giving him a blank canvas, considering so many players have shown this season they do not have the fight, ability or mentality to play at United, they can leave.

Is there any good reason why he doesn’t leave Ajax now and join us for the last 6 games to help lift us into a 4th place finish?

Because he's not a masochist that likes to suffer. Jesus himself can't save this season for United.

Journalists are already talking like this is done and dusted and talking about the summer transfers.

Two midfielders sounds good but desperately need a RW too?

Good to see a focus on CMs though. We've neglected this position for ages.

Also the fact that he

Partly depends on the fate of MG. Also, we won’t buy an entire team in one window anyway, we will fix some issues now and some more later.

Greenwood had a bleak future.

I think 4 players in a rebuild window is not a lot to ask. We won't see huge turnover people expect but I'd have thought two attackers and two midfielders would have been the way to go.

But yeah it's more important for the quality to be right rather than the quantity.

Agree with all of that.

Although I wouldn’t jump the gun on MG completely. If he’s cleared in court he’ll be back next season. He’s £100m asset and the club will keep him if they can. The inevitable shit storm would be the last thing Ten Hag needs to start with though.

A manager that doesn't fancy a player should be told to do one until he proves that he is worth anything. Interestingly no serious club just get rid of players that a manager doesn't fancy, it has to make sense which is why City didn't get rid of Aguero and Bayern told Van Gaal that they would sign Neuer regardless of his opinion.

Right but who at our club is in that Aguero bracket where you're confident in overruling the manager? Sancho, Bruno, probably Varane if he gets to play on the right of the pairing. Anyone else?

I find it impossible to believe this will be announced before Ajax win the league. It would be a major and direct distraction, with them only being four points clear.

Bruno might play tucked in on the wing like Tadic does. Tadic was a winger, but he's 33 now and not pacy anymore. Especially if we buy 2 midfielders and Ten Hag likes Van De Beek (if only to have someone on the pitch who knows how to play his football) and managers invariably end up comfortable with players like Fred. Could also see another CM like Hannibal join the first team, or even Diallo who looks a world away right now but seems like a good fit for how Ten Hag plays.

I'd be fine with us buying 2 CMs, a RB and a CB.

The point is that there is no hard rule, you do not follow a manager just because he doesn't fancy a player. You do it because his opinion makes sense and serves the club long term interests.

After watching this, it is quite a bitter sweet feeling.

One way , what a great team Ten Hag has tuned up: energetic, technically excellent, fast pace, resilient and fight for a win until last minute.

On the other hand, no way our current squad could play this way. That means Ten Hag would be climbing a very steep mountain trying to implement his tactics, and could be sacked before the squad is fully overhauled in the 1st or 2nd season.

It's not necessarily very likely, but certainly not impossible. Their rivals for the title, PSV, have already announced that their manager is leaving at the end of the season to be replaced by Ruud van Nistelrooy, for example.

I don't think it's too uncommon to announce managerial changes quite far out on the continent. Seems to be a thing in German football especially.

I hope ten Hag changes one thing. We need to stop spending lots on big players and start spending smartly… look at liverpools signings for example… Robertson from hull who has now turned into one of the best lb in the world… they got mane fairly cheap, Diaz… firminho. The cheaper signings are usually the ones that come good and are the hungry type of players.

This take surprises me. The current Ajax team is made of players that are mainly inferior to United's from a technical and athletic standpoint. The way people are talking about them you would think that people haven't seen them outside of Ajax, most of them weren't particularly good.

Also people should keep in mind that LVG made a worse set of player play technical possession Football from day one.

If the board have chosen him they have to give him time to build that side. The ones who do not want to play that way or cannot play that way will need to be replaced. It will take time. It will be the most sensible thing this board has done for a long time.

Because he is under contract and that his employer may not like that idea?

I will happily give Erik the time he needs. Because he's actually a modern manager that clearly has an idea of how his team should play. Never had this kind of manager before so I might as well support him, at least we're trying something new that also makes sense.

Conversely, what a distraction all this talk is. Putting it to bed might be beneficial.

Of course it's more likely anything is announced afterwards though. Just, there is another way to look at it.

You're being dragged into this modern day notion that managers can only apply a single style of play on a single type of player. This is absolutely false and if thats the case with ETH then he is not a good manager at all.

During his education, and his understanding, I am sure he has learned all about tactics and styles which are successful dependant on what type of player he has at his disposal.

Also people should keep in mind that LVG made a worse set of player play technical possession Football from day one.

The midfield and attack from LVG's first win as United manager was Blind, Herrera, Di Maria, Mata, van Persie, Rooney. No way in hell that's a worse set of players technically than a group that would currently include McTominay, Fred, and one of Elanga or Rashford.

Either way, I hope we get a lot done in the transfer window.

Wow - I genuinely think Ajax looked a bit shite in that game. Carved open far too easily and defence had no clue how to contain direct runs. They barely carve Feyenoord open much until after 70 minutes and up to that point Feyenoord had a great chance to make it 3-1.

Two of Ajax' goals just came out of nowhere - a set piece and a rebound.

And the rest of the team was made of Borthwick Jackson, Evans, Shaw, Smalling, Rojo, Jones, Fellaini, Blackett, McNair, Wilson and many others. Also Herrera is nothing special technically, he is no better than Fred.

That team as a whole wasn't technically better than the team we currently have and I would argue that it was indeed worse particularly when you in depth.

Borthwick Jackson there's a throwback. LVG loved that guy.

Tbh I don't see how we don't have a big turnover. At least with outgoings. Question marks over all of these in whatever capacity:
  • Henderson
  • Wan Bissaka
  • Jones
  • Tuanzebe
  • Brandon Williams
  • Bailly
  • Matic
  • Pogba
  • Mata
  • Van de beek
  • Pereira
  • Lingard
  • Ronaldo
  • Cavani
  • Rashford
  • Martial
  • Chong
  • Pellistri
  • Amad
Of course, a chunk of these (maybe 5) will probably just go out on loan again, and I doubt Rashford, Martial, Van de Beek, Matic and Wan bissaka are going anywhere. That's still 9 players out though!

Our squad was already bloated though wasn't it?
So 9 out, 4-5 in I'm assuming
