Everything that the dutch/Ajax fans told us about him have been true so far except the part where he actually turns it around. We had been told it will take some time for his methods to work so I guess we'll just have to trust that it will.

We had been warned to expect the points below and all are true so far.
  • He's shite in the transfer market
  • Awkward with the press
  • Will inexplicably give significant minutes to players who are either shite or undeserving
  • He will frustrate initially with results on the pitch
I'm still confident in him turning it around but his biggest error by a mile has been trusting this squad despite all the evidence of about 70% of this squad being wasters. He waxed lyrical about the squad finishing 2nd but that season was an illusion and he fell for it. I can imagine that he's now deeply regretting not gutting the squad or at least requesting to do so in the way Conte would have for example.

All in all the majority of the blame still lies with the board for keeping these players and essentially allowing EtH to choose his own targets in the market.
If he’s shite in the transfer market and we are giving him free reign without a proper DoF, aren’t we going to be left in an even bigger mess?

@Samid is right.

I don't understand this. Is Murtough trying to win a reality TV show where he needs public backing and so has to look supportive? Who cares whether or not he looks supportive as long as he does his job? As a Football Director his job is to look after the long term interests of United as a football club. Supposedly, he's the one who hired Ten Hag. So Ten Hag should be expecting to work to him not the other way around.

When you negotiate a contract with the employer, ETH would have inserted certain conditions for him to accept the role. There will be compromises otherwise he wouldn't have signed on. Its not some take it or leave it contract offering to ETH.

We need signings and we need them fast, whether it's Rabiot and wait for De Jong or just decide feck it and get SMS and Rabiot, but going into Liverpool

Rabiot
SMS Eriksen
is 1000x better than anything we have, He's a fantastic coach but you can't coach Mentality into players. They have to stand up and be counted themselves, for far to long some of these players have underperformed and not only have they not been moved on, we've rewarded them with new contracts, so why would they care? In their heads they'll outlast the manager anyway,

All that within a week? Impossible.
2+ weeks more likely -- contract negotiations and then medicals etc?

Do you think ETH thinks he is shit in the transfer market?
It's still something United should've been aware off. The reports before he joined us how much power and influence he wanted over transfers combined with his perceived weakness in that field were a bit of a red flag

It's the same wretched cycle in full swing. The next manager will inherit the previous managers players and will have different ideas. As Ralf said Liverpool and City didn't just bring in two amazing managers. The clubs genuinely prepared for their arrival and knew the football they wanted to play. The clowns on our board are utterly clueless when it comes to football matters and are again pinning it all on the manager.

He didnt want sole power. He wanted to have a proper influence, which isnt abnormal

We really haven’t given him the platform to succeed with the lack of signings.

However he’s been incredibly naive in his tactics so far. Insisting on playing out from the back when we don’t have the players to do it has cost us massively in terms of mistakes.

He’s also put in Martinez straight into the heart of defence when he likely needs time to adjust to the PL. I wonder whether his confidence now is completely shot.

The players and executive team have let him down, no doubt, but he needs to be more pragmatic with his approach until we can get the players required in to fit his style.

Jesus Christ… ETH said in his post match presser he instructed the players not to play out from the back, invite Brentford on to them and play the long ball, those are his own words.

I didn’t watch his post match presser. I comment on what I see on the pitch. If he didn’t tell his players to do that then I’m even more worried.

The same people that are slamming ETH are the ones who made fun of Arteta at Arsenal. Look what happened over there.

Give the man time he’ll get us going.
He needs signings. This squad is rotten. Ralf said it: 10 new players.

The funniest people to me are the ones who claim not playing Iqbal is a mistake.
If ETH plays him and he has a bad game, you’ll immediately slam him. I can just see the posts already… “ETH is mad to put a youngster under so much pressure”, “He’s ruining his career”, “Iqbal clearly not ready for PL, why did he play him” etc.

He needs to come out publicly and state that these players either adapt or find a new club in the next three weeks.

These cnuts have been mollycoddled for years and need to know that they can’t pick and choose how the team plays.

He said that the players didn’t carry out his tactical instructions but that he is solely responsible for that and the result. The team had let the fans down.

Initially voted for Poch even though EtH's the better manager.
Was sceptical on Erik as he needed foundations in place to succeed ala Ajax and I didn't think he'd get that here and also the PL is brutal.
The whole "Premiership proven" line that was quoted by many is coming back to roost.
I still back him but he needs to learn fast.
It's going to be a long painful season.

You don’t hire a principled tactical manager with a clear defined style of play and then ask him to play pragmatic Mourinho football. If you do that then he will never be able to ultimately implement the style of football he’s being brought in to play. It’s not then his fault that the crap recruitment team have been unable to bolster to squad to help with that transition but it’s 100% wrong to say he needs to change his ways. If that’s what people want we should have stuck with Mourinho.

I agree with you to a point, but tell me this, what do you predict the score will be next week if he doesn't exercise pragmatism?

The ultimate goal is to get there with his style, but we can't be losing 4 nil every week with the excuse of well we don't have the players for this style but we persist anyway.

I reckon there’s a tiny chance we get beat 10-0 and Ten Hag walks out. Liverpool have a habit recently of pushing managers over the edge, this would just be in keeping with the trend of us getting exponentially more ridiculous as time goes on.

No he doesn’t as that would be very stupid. Conversations like that need to be held behind closed doors.

I think it is too easy to just absolve him from all the blame.

His idea of playing proactive football does not mesh with the players he has currently available.
So sure, he can stick to his idea and struggle week to week or just adapt to the players he has right now, who are clearly more comfortable with a more defensive, reactive setup.

I think there is a middle ground here and until he has the players he needs, ten Hag should be a lot more flexible and pragmatic in his approach.

So he instructed them to play Oleball but they defied him and played ETHball. This certainly is a most curious development.

I understand the pessimism and you might be right.

My reading of the situation is that ETH is so dissatisfied with the squad that he has not worked out the best approach for getting results with the current players. They are so bad, especially in midfield and we are so short of viable options up front that ETH is banking on a few more signings before settling on a formation, strategy / style of play. Probably he feels we cannot play the way he wants to with the players we have.

It’s not good. Perhaps he should have set up more pragmatically to just get a couple of points on the board or a clean sheet.

But I do think he will solve the problems he has once he knows exactly what his squad will be. Even if we don’t get anyone decent in, I think he will then make the difficult decisions to adapt his blueprint in order to get the best out of the squad.

All that said, it has been a pretty terrible start for him.
I am afraid that he cannot do much with our current midfield and attack, and Eriksen was very poor yesterday as a deeplying playmaker. Also worringly to hear that the players threw the game plan in the bin. I think that Rangnick was correct that we need 7-10 new players and CB was not a priority to spend 50m on this summer. Martinez was bought to play out from the back while we have already conceded 6 goals to teams we should beat.

He said in a post match presser that he asked the players to invite Brentford on to them and play the long ball, but they failed to carry out his instructions.
Doesn’t surprise me… another manager the players are ignoring. Getting to a point now where they just need to release them if they can’t sell them.

He has to prove himself. I see several posters debating giving him time and money. Nothing suggest so far his transfers are going to work.

We cannot blindly give him time and players we need to see something in return. He has until December to show improvements or he should be out. We are Manchester united, not fecking Wigan

I personally already wrote on here that a top half finish in the league this season would be a hell of an achievement. We’ve been in relegation form for the past 6 months and there are no quick fixes. One thing I do agree with Gary Neville is that the owners should come out, speak to the fans and explain what the plan is to get out of this mess, because there are changes taking place behind the scenes and the fans deserve clarity.

If you took the Ajax team from last year and put it in the Premier League, it would probably struggle. It wouldn’t lose 4-0 to Brentford but it wouldn’t be challenging for the Champions League places either. Now we have ETH managing an inferior group of players.

Our ceiling for this season is very low.

Malacia was our best player yesterday

To be honest, the transfer business is terrible.
He built a tactic in his pre season (which was going "well") and he had to change it completely for the 1st game of the Premier league because Martial, who is known to be injury prone and was deemed surplus to requirements in January, picked up an injury.
The other alternative was playing Ronaldo who didn't do the pre season and doesn't want to stay so its hard to keep the tactic he worked on during the pre season.
And somehow the most money was spent on a CB while he plans of playing a back 4 and keep Maguire as a regular starter and captain.
So that means Varane will be a squad depth player?

My biggest worry about him so far is that we haven’t really scored a goal from a clear cutting chance.

Dalot’s goal in the last match during a corner which hit him on the back was very poor to average.

Attacking wise we seem to be not in any sort of basic sync.

Yeah I mean scoring one, an own goal, in two matches is bad, but conceding six against Brighton and Brentford is inexcusable

Malacia was our best player yesterday

He played the 2nd half. When we were 4-0 down and the game was lost. Brentford just controlled the victory.. Eriksen and Martinez played the first half and they were shockingly bad. ( So was many others )

When will we ever learn on here? Surely 4 managers in 10 years means that changing the manager is not the solution? There aren’t many better managers ETH around, if any.

Still being outrun is a concern to me and it doesn't even look like he's trying to implement a high press. Mid to low a lot of the time. Klopp went high press from the off any Liverpool. Like Carragher said, people laughed at first because it would cost them goals and points, often when they had battered the other team and tired. But eventually, fitness improved and they were destroying teams.

I feel like we'd see more of this if he had any intention of playing this way.

I didn't see that quoted anywhere. If soz not very progressive football from a supposed progressive cowch. Playing on the counter at Brentford? Seriously? This is United!

For me it’s about short term pain for long term gain. It’s important that Ten Hag finds out quickly who can and who can’t play his style of football. There was always a risk that it would result in some poor results at the start. The key thing now will be ETHs mental strength and decision making. He will have to be increasing my tough and try and phase out the worst performers. Personally I’m willing to give him time for a full scorched earth approach.

Defensively I can put more on the side and blame the players. De gea has been at fault for both game goals. Dalot can’t defend etc.

Attacking wise though - this team has absolutely no ability to basically score a goal the way even an average manager like Ole got us to never mind the result.
