Correct decision. You sense he has to hit the ground running though and I hope INEOS have been very specific in what they demand from him. A clear identity has to emerge, much more possession and control of games and Onana cannot continue to be peppered with 25 shots a game. Oh, and the medical department needs an overhaul - we have players missing entire seasons, not just odd games.

And how long do you think it takes a clear identity to emerge ? Postecoglu managed this in 4 weeks !

Or just maybe.... with all the restructuring going on, they are going to change his role from that of manager to a head coach and alter his contract according to that(with a lot of other clauses in there)? Just a thought. Interesting that people are so confident about something that they know nothing about.
Maybe they will. It's immaterial to me, I don't think he's a suitable fit for the club, whether that's as manager, head coach or kitman.

Some of the comments in this thread by so called fans are utter ridiculous. Support our manager ffs.

I'm worried this is all leading to a mid season Southgate appointment. ETH needs to start the season very strongly!

Lots of saltiness in this place this summer. Good, as I'm running out of salt for all of these pies we're going to need next season.

Strengthen the spine of the team, CB, DM and CF, then I would get RB, LB not sure, if both players are fit for start of season it isn't urgent. Then make sure you sell the players that need to be sold.

The options for a new manager were not great. No top manager at a CL league club was going to leave them to come here, Poch and Tuchel as soon as they were told that the club will chose style of play and who to buy likely didn't fancy it and I was not inspired by the other options.

Well look abysmal in the Community shield. Lose our first two games in the league and the we’ll get Southgate.

Great times ahead.

I think that's easy to say. Ultimately we want United to succeed. If people feel very strongly that we are going backwards under Ten Hag then it makes sense to be incredibly frustrated by this decision.

For me personally, after Tuchel was a no go I don't really see any good candidates so might as well give Ten Hag a last chance.

Ideally McKenna hits the ground running.

I predicted this in another thread 10-12 days ago. As soon as he wasn't sacked on the Sunday after the cup final, I felt this would be the outcome. Indeed, I said that prior to the awful showing at Palace that he was safe.

Given some of the names being suggested as replacements, I'm relieved but that's not saying much. I wonder if the club has their eye on someone who isn't available this year either through contract or wanting a rest.

I never went as far as calling for ETH to be sacked - I hate doing that - but I don't see how things will get better and wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't make it to next summer (maybe Christmas). I guess the board are hoping for a SAF-type transformation from his early years and are looking to run deep in the Europa. I fear they are wrong and we'll see the same occasional great result among a lot of shite. ETH has to get recruitment spot on in the next few weeks...

You better believe I’m pulling for Ipswich this season. I want him to be as good as I think he is.

I am going to watch each and every game of theirs and hope he comes good on expectations. He is my great white hope for this club. Hopefully, the Ipswich owners are planning on an useful summer that helps this guy.

Keeping ten hag is fine when you think of the alternatives. But now he needs to be backed and Eth needs to deliver.

There's no point keeping him if we gonna have the same core of players again. The squad and team still need changes. We won't get everything right but you would hope we get the spine in place

The contract extension talks make no sense however

Baffling that this end of season review wasn't conducted months ago. Whether EtH stays or goes shouldn't (and probably won't) come down to the FA Cup result. The decision should have been made public the day after the match allowing a new manager to settle in or EtH to begin preparations for the new season. We're in a total limbo now. It's a bad look and poor planning from INEOS. Very disappointing.

End of season reviews normally wait until the season has ended.

So you genuinely believe we weren't talking to other managers?
I think they did but finished that a long time ago, the media have just been running in circles for weeks since when the decision was made straight after the FA cup final.

Ten Hag Nine Lives.

Let's hope he can kick on next season with fewer injuries and an improved squad.

At least we're not getting one of Tuchel or Southgate, so that's a relief.

Good decision.

yes, he needs to improve tactically especially his in game management. It sometimes gets frustrating. Hopefully the new owners will help with signings as well. But i eventually wanted him to stay because:

1- we can not keep changing managers every 2 years. Absolutely ruining us. Better to give him more time to rebuild.
2- the players seem to be behind him. Rare after 2 years at united!! the dressing room is not toxic.
3- he is promoting players from the academy. Garnacho, mainoo and kambawala. Good, we need that.
4- he won 2 trophies in 2 years.
5- he had an injured squad all year. It’s a good argument for him.
6- he is starting to tell the media to f off. Especially when overhyping young players. He’s protecting them.

hope this works!

This post hits the nail on the head.

These are all great points.

One thing I'd absolutely hope for: ETH must be more ruthelss - players out of form or consistently making mistakes must not be automatic shoe-ins game after game...

I think that’s automatic, given he has a mandate to do as he wants with a new deal.

If we do well next season it will be interesting to see the various reasons that start popping up on here from those who think he’s useless as to why.
‘Glad to see someone made him change his tactics’
‘This new signing has bailed him out’
‘Ineos have told him to start x, y or z’

Someone was claiming Wilcox was influencing his tactics earlier for goodness sakes just to cope with us winning the FA cup and playing decently.

The cup win gave everyone hope as that was a superb performance, first half at least.

And you feel that just having Martinez and Shaw available for more than 10% of the season alone would make a huge difference.

However, it is amazing how appalling a league season you can get away with. 8th with record defeats, shots against, battering to the likes of Palace, minus goal difference etc.

Hope Ten Hag pushes on though, has shown glimpses he could really get it right.

This was always coming after he won the cup. Same old United, to scared to make the big decisions. Guarantee he'll be sacked next season after another write-off.

Fantastic news. A kick in the teeth for player power.
Now bring more of the kids into the first team and work with the new execs on some sensible transfers - in and out

The only coach I would have sacked him for was Xavi.
I was always Ten Hag in but I understood the calls to sack him. I mean, we finished 8th. But it’s not always that simple. I think it was a bad season from him tactically. He didn’t deal with the injuries well enough but I’m convinced he’s a better coach than he showed last season and I’m convinced the names being banded around aren’t better than he is.
Once it was clear it wasn’t going to be Xavi, I didn’t want him going anywhere. This time last year, no one on this forum would have swapped him for some of the names being banded around. One season doesn’t define a coach.
What I want confirmed is that ETH has clear idea that we want to play a progressive style and we won’t compromise on that. The club needs to help him by getting rid of shit and lazy players and bringing in the talent required and the depth required. I also hope ETH will take a backseat on recruitment.
We have a lot of work to do.

Can’t help but think back to that Guardian article before the cup final.

Has to be in the running for feck up of the year!

Not sure the guys passes to Utd will be getting stamped this year

People are fans of the club not the manager. That may mean recognising the manager is not the best thing for the club. They aren't mutually exclusive and I rue the day Fergie told the fans to stick by the manager. Sir Alex was the exception not the rule. Giving managers more time doesn't get you better managers it just gets bad managers more time.

Glad this is the outcome, mostly because getting any other manager would've then decreased the chances of potentially going after McKenna next summer if he does well in the Premier League...I am all eggs in his basket for the future at the moment.

None of the other options were any more appealing than Ten Hag right now, and some considerably less appealing like Southgate or Frank. Tuchel might've ruffled some feathers and won another cup, but inevitably would've fallen out with almost everyone after 2 years and left us in a worse state than we currently are. De Zerbi or Pochettini might have worked but would've needed time to implement anything, which then would likely have meant not making a move for McKenna, and then they might've end up failing eventually.

So yeah hopefully EtH or McKenna will have a positive season next season, and then we're either moving forward or hopefully we'll be able to bring in a guy with the potential to move us forward long-term. However if they both do well then who knows what the right call will be...

Anyway, it's definitely less depressing than the other potential options at the moment.

Most of the players clearly like Ten Hag, our injury list cant possibly be as bad next season, and at least we've got some B-grade rather than D-grade Thursday night football (or nothing) to look forward to, even if we're shite in the league again.

How do you conduct end of season reviews before the end? Also how can EtH prepare when he’s off on holiday?

I suspect he and INEOS knew all along just INEOS had no interest in pandering to the media.

the only people in limbo are those that cling to every word these shitty “journos” say.

I’m fairly indifferent on the decision, but happy to give him another seasons all things considered, but the idea it was some sort of organisational negligence and reflected badly on United that this wasn’t sorted immediately after the Cup final is some of the silliest cope I’ve seen on this forum. The season ended literally 2 and a half weeks ago and there’s a Euros on any second. It’’s caused absolutely no damage to anything or anyone, except I guess for those who were incredibly eager for him to be sacked who seemed to have driven themselves into a frenzy over these (again, absolutely trifflingly small) 2 and a half weeks by that looking less likely.

If anything giving it some considered thought and breathing space from the Cup Final so as to avoid an LVG situation but making sure it’s sorted before the Euros was pretty much the perfect balance here.

New contract as a reward for finishing 8th (and that placement is flattering). Joke of a club.

Happy with that.

I fear, however, that too many ends have to meet to make next season a good one.
- We need to get 3-4 key signings right this time. We need serious reinforcement in both defence, midfield and attack. Hungry players with the right mindset.
- We need to sort out the amount of injuries we've had. Someone like Licha and Shaw are fundamental to us building a proper starting 11.
- We need to get rid of the bad seeds in the squad in order to create the right foundation for a better culture and coherence within the squad.

I have a hard time seeing all of these things play out the way we need them to. But I hope the new ownership and new people in the administration will help ETH

Got all my Scouse and Arse mates rejoicing in my group chat.

Feck off.

Our club is lost. And many of our fans are too. Completely delusional.

ETH is a nonsense of a manager. Did you note all those top teams, Barca, Bayern, Juventus, Liverpool, Chelsea... all have changed managers and not one, not one would even consider Erik Ten Hag.

Bayern Munich preferred Vincent Kompany.

And yet we still, still have some fans who think this is a good decision.

We deserve everything we get next season. And that will not be much.

Clutching here mate. Munich's first choice was Alonso, then they spoke to everyone and even tried to U-turn on Tuchel but he wasn't interested, maybe because he thought he had a chance at the United job. They paid Burnley circa £10m for Company, apparently.

If we'd sacked EtH after the cup final he'd probably have had a few phone calls by now. He might already have received a few while they did this review. Impossible for us to know.

Look at it this way; there was no obvious candidate so they've gone for stability to begin with. It gives the new football directors time to actually arrive and work together. Probably keep a list of potential new manager candidates at any given time, like Brighton do. If things don't improve under EtH, or do but then plateau, they'll probably be ruthless and move him on for one of those guys, if the timing fits.

2 and a half weeks is a lifetime for the tweet devouring generation. They've been through a roller coaster of emotions.

Depends what our aims are. I’d say Top 4 is realistic without a dramatic window as long as we don’t lose our key players in defence again. In such an awful season we were only 8 points off Villa.

CB, DM and LB for me would be a good window if we decided to focus on those players as priority I.e. expensive signings then add a few younger players for depth on frees/loans.
