Dumb take. United fans say that there needs a change in structure cause year after year any manager has failed. And they have shown the same pattern, good first year, and horrendous second. So United fans have now understood that simply changing a manger wont help. We need an all round change, but guess what happens when you change the management, and the manager and recruit bad at the same time? Well look at chelsea. So you might think your post has humor in it, but its extremely off the mark if you ask me.

I think the structure is the biggest issue and what seems to being resolved now but it will take time. This has led to there being a lack of long term, strategic vision in terms of recruitment. Each manager has been bringing in their own recruits so the squad has become a hash together of the wants of several different managers with no one responsible for pulling the club in any direction over the long term - regardless of who the manager is. It won't be fun for a couple of years, but I believe we are at least seeing an acknowledgement of this and it sounds like there's a positive direction in how recruitment will work moving forward.

Bit more complex than that

Another manager could have persisted with trying Amrabat the last months rather than throwing their belief in Mainoo like Ten Hag has.

Same for Garnacho and the amount of starts he's had this season.

Having that excellent reserve is pretty pointless if the manager doesn't have faith in them. I'm not saying Tuchel doesn't, I don't know, but I'm not aware of many youth players he's played his part in.

With PSG he has played far more youth players than anyone else.

There won't be the option to persist with Amrabat or someone else over Garnacho because the manager won't be responsible for building the squad, the structure behind the manager will be. The manager will have the responsibility of getting the most of the players he has available. If there's an exciting youth player coming through, an older player will be sold and the youth player will now be the backup for that position. There is no fringe players like Amrabat knocking around to steal minutes. Any incoming manager will have to agree to this before the come in. This is the entire point of having structure.

Good stuff then. Anyway probably not worth thinking about because the new guys coming in for INEOS seem to be clued up and I get the impression United do finally have a clear idea on the type of manager they want and will stress what's expected of them.

I totally agree. But we still are happy that he is playing. So that tells you how bad it must be for manager to play him over and over again.

I am certainly not happy that Maguire has to play so often. And I don't feel for the manager considering I don't think he has any idea how to construct a working defence if his Plan A fails. He has no Plan B or C for anything. His idea for tactical change is to throw tired and injured bodies at Plan A until the entire team is wasted.

Now, even normally superfit Maguire is wasted. It's a meatgrinder with ETH.

When he took over Mainz (after being their U19 coach before) he immediately brought some of his players into the first team.
Dortmund has been a conveyor belt for young talents for a decade, that worked without disruption when he managed them.
PSG you already mentioned
Chelsea was in a special situation - due to the transfer ban they had to promote a bunch of youth players just before he arrived and he lead them to a CL win. Nonetheless players like Chalobah were still promoted to the first team under him
Bayern is struggling to have great talent for years now, but still he brought Pavlovic through and gave more minutes to Tel. Some wished for even more, but still it's not like that he didn't use youth players there.

Hopefully it works out something like that. Could still be a way off though because that "structure behind the manager" isn't in place yet. We don't even know who is IDing and deciding who we sign this summer. Yet you'd ideally want to believe that United know who their targets are by now.

Does it? surely means they get one opinion that suits the narrative of the people they're talking to. Mitten at least talks to many people and gauges his opinion from that. Maybe, but they're not privy to any information apart from a coach they worked with over a decade ago and just making baseless claims.

You'd have to ask him, but Fletcher would definitely be considered the footballing department if you asked me.

Maybe so, but they're 100% not going to ever say anything negative to Mitten, unless it's fits a narrative. At the end of the day ETH is judged on performances and results on the pitch, and Mitten has the same credentials as me and you in that aspect.

Yeah, if anything I would worry about signing star players or players who believe that they are owed a place in the team or in Tuchel's plan. That's where friction could happen but youth players only need to train properly and fit within any of the hundreds tactical setups he has in mind.

I'm sure the lads coming in have done their homework and know the deal. They'll already have or know players they want to target so I'm not worried on that front. They'll want to hit the ground running also.

I’m warming more to the Tuchel idea every day. He should have been at Chelsea for years but happen to be caught in the middle of that shit show takeover (still one of the most insane things I’ve ever seen by the way, forcing an owner to sell his team) and promptly exited. You’d think if he comes here he’s directly on board with the vision and style of play:players that Ashworth and co want do the friction shouldn’t be there.

Could we get Tuchel in before the FA Cup final? Assuming Bayern get knocked out of the CL tonight.

He's telling them to play man for man in defence, similar to Bielsa with Leeds, and that requires a very high level of individual athleticism from every player on the pitch....something we certainly don't have.

That's why there's gaps everywhere, teams will use decoys to drag key players out of position and isolate slower, weaker individuals. Look at the way Olise waltzed past Casemiro and then was able to run 30 yards to shoot at goal from inside the area without being challenged. Look how Mateta was easily able to isolate Evans.

If you have old and slow players, you need to drop the line and play with a very tight defensive structure - what we're doing is the total opposite

Yeah people should check out back when we hammered those Bielsa Leeds teams and it would shock them how similar it looks to our current defensive setup. Going man for man everywhere requires absurd levels of athleticism and essentially you need to be bullying the opposition. Even funny fit we don’t have close to the personnel for it, much less now. Was a stupid idea from the moment we tried against wolves, and here we are in May doing the same shit getting hammered by Palace.

We don't even really go man for man though. It is like a 5-0-5 with the midfield empty.

Maybe if he... comes into training tomorrow embracing (out of season) the traditional Dutch Xmas custom of donning blackface, that might do the trick. Or strides into the pre-game press conference naked from the waist down and swinging. Difficult to know what else, short of that, he would need to do further re. making his position sufficiently untenable

I think the players were trying against Palace, they ran around enough for sure. They are capable of losing badly without downing tools, especially with two slow cb’s in the line up.

It would be weird if there wasn‘t a loss of confidence right now.

The narrative around McLaren is bollocks. Ten Hag brought him in; he‘s part of the staff and bears some responsibility for the performances as well.

An interim should not be part of the first team staff.

"If the situation goes into meltdown"

I'd hate to see what they classify as "meltdown" if this whole season does not.

Yeah I was just thinking the exact same thing,so needed to lose by 5/6 on Monday for meltdown then

We're on course for our lowest ever points tally, looking like we may not win another game this season and we're not in meltdown?!

Yeah this is totally wild, just give it McClaren for the last 4 games as it makes the most sense

An interim should not be part of the first team staff.
It's not that simple. If the assistant fully supports what the manager did, then yes, then it doesn't make sense to have him as the interim. If the manager becomes untenable for personal reasons (=being an insufferable cnut etc), then there is no reason against just letting the assistant go on. And then there is the possibility that there is a disagreement between the manager and the assistant, making the assistant interim manager in that case essentially becomes a case of the board backing the assistant over the manager.

This latter scenario is what people expect to be the case, as there doesn't seem to be any visible input from McClaren in that team.

I assume they define meltdown as players actively refusing to play and publicly calling the manager a bald egg head, or Ten Hag having a breakdown and taking a shit in a bin then driving to Dundee without shoes. Because performance and results wise it can't get much worse. I can only guess that they would rather avoid the hassle of having to do the paperwork to get an interim for a few games

Jeez if paperwork stops Utd putting McClaren in place as interim for 4 games then we have a problem

I want him gone as much as anyone but an interim really serves no purpose now and may just complicate matters. The time for it has been and gone.

If we lose all our remaining games at least it makes it easier for the new manager to come in and improve our form. A low bar makes it easier to build positive momentum.

Losing our remaining games isn't a logical step in any shape or form. Do you see any other club, never mind a club of this magnitude concede to this mentality? No fanbase deserves this.

Can someone please briefly summaries how Tuchel got on at Chelsea and how it failed?
Was a happy and successful guy when he could just coach the team and Granovskaia and Cech dealt with everything else. Clashed with Boehly after the club sale when he was expected to do parts of their jobs as well.

I mean he won the Champion's League, I think 'failed' is not really the word here. He probably left due to other reasons.
Finished 3rd the season after as well. I remember the talk at the time was that Boehly always wanted to bring his own man (Potter), and there was constant friction between them, with Boehly talking about 443 being the last straw.

Thanks guys.
I had a quick look on Google and yeah seems it was more a power struggle with new ownership, rather than anything football related.
I think Uniteds new structure is allowing the manger to focus on the team only, so should suit Tuchel.

Insane thing to say considering we are in a cup final. Of course an interim can serve a purpose if he gives us a better chance of winning that final
