Erik ten Hag | 2022/23 & 2023/24

Yeah but he also seems to have a very big ego. Could he take a sacking on the chin?
Absolutely, because he has his excuses all lined up already. None of it will be his fault. It will have been injuries and the turmoil in the boardroom and not getting the players he wanted (despite spunking £400m up the wall on shite). And the worst part is that he WILL walk straight into another big job - be that Bayern or Ajax or somewhere else, which will only convince him further that he did nothing wrong and other clubs see that. I almost don't want him to be sacked out of pure spite. To make him see out next season and wallow in what he's created, with the knock-on effect it'd hopefully have on his career. Fantastical nonsense of course, but...

if he survives the week I’ll be astounded

It will point to the incompetence of INEOS. People are getting hung up on a replacement but the problem is if you don't move the manager at instant it establishes that the hierarchy have poor standards. It's the managerial equivalent of gross misconduct, anyone who had two eyes could see that it was heading for a trainwreck from 6 games into the season.

I think we are reaching the point where pretty much any competent manager would do a better job than him

ETH blames Mainoo indirectly in the last few seconds of the video for conceding the goal from the throw in.

This is absolutely wrong.

He's obviously leaving in the summer. Nobody can survive this. The real question is how much of it is his fault and how much will we be doomlooping all over again in November.

We've been saying this all season, Ten Hag would have gotten us relegated without the likes of Bruno bailing him out. However, the season ends in May so I'm not sure why he's saying that like it's only December.

He's not a manager cut out at this level.

Worst manager to have taken the helm since Sir Alex retired. A diabolical performance and the reality is the team has deserved this type of result in other fixtures where fringe players have bailed Erik out.

You're right,I think.PL as a whole is pretty forgiving in terms of giving managers time (if not so much in terms of its general demands on players): upper mid-table clubs in other european leagues don't seem anything like as patient, let alone the likes of Madrid etc. This does let mediocrity slide more than it should. But United are probably the worst of all for this, fuelled largely by the abject governance/oversight structure headed by those ghoulish failchildren. INEOS coming in has clearly begun to chnage certain things in terms of structure and people with track record of competency, but i'm still worried that they're going to be too lenient, seduced by 'a process', as well as being 'cool-headed rather than hasty and not throwing money after bad money' and all of SJR's messaging to that effect, to their and fans' detriment. The structure should be more important - but you still need someone with basic competencies to implement the coaching side - ETH was at least that - 'competent'- on paper but he seems to have regressed since last March, injuries or not.

You're right. The real cause of our demise is the governance of the Glazers. Most fans seem to think its about the debt. However their biggest failure has always been in not getting people in with the capacity to truly supervise our managers. They've been passive owners in a club that needed them to be active. Not simply because of greed, but in placing far too much trust on people ( CEO's and Managers) that they shouldn't have. Our managers have been going unchecked for far too long. At United, since Fergie left in 2013, no manager has:

a. Hit the ground running
b. Gotten us to play sustained good football for longer than a month

None of these teams have been able to control games or create chances consistently. In fact, our only relatively successful seasons have come as a result of playing largely defensive football. This means, that out of all the managers we've had, at no point did any of them truly show signs of them being able to play good competitive football. Yet we have people blaming players and defending managers to the hilt. Van Gaal was praised for literally 3 weeks of good football in 2015. Ole had that brief end of season period in 2020. Mourinho had the first month of the 17/18 season. Ten Haag had the post world cup January period and Moyes even didn't have a period. For a club used to so much success, our tolerance for failure is high.

Have we got any chance of dropping to 17th in the xG table? I know we’re currently 16th (just double checked and we've actually managed to jump up a few places to 14th). For context that’s relegation level bad, we’re statistically one of the worst teams in the league.
If we didn't have arguably the worst batch of newly promoted sides in PL history, we'd be fighting xRelegation right now.

'Under performing' Man Utd 'one of worst coached teams in league'

  • This is the most defeats United have suffered in a Premier League season (13)
  • United have never finished below seventh in Premier League, they are currently eighth.
  • Since the start of last season, only Nottingham Forest (five) have lost more Premier League away games by a four-goal margin or higher than United (three).
  • The Selhurst Park thrashing was United’s heaviest defeat of the season
  • United have conceded 81 goals in all competitions this season, their most in a campaign since 1976-77 (also 81).
  • They have not finished a season on a minus goal difference since the 1989-90 Division One season. They are currently on -1.
  • United’s expected goals on Monday was 0.35 – their second worst of the season

Get him out of the club. We've done it many times this season etc? It's your responsibility then to stop it.

I've never disliked a United manager as much as this one. His interviews all season have been delusional he is stealing a living this year.

Tactically he has been woeful. There has been no proper midfield set up all season. He can't adapt to anything either pre-game or during the game.

I actually would prefer Moyes. There I've said it.

He can't handle a competitive league he's better off going back to Ajax. He might even struggle at Bayern.

I'd have him out before the cup final but the money men won't do that I expect probably hoping Bayern take him off our hands instead.

I would genuinely put Keane in charge for just the cup final and try and scare the players into just grafting and fighting for every scrap to see if we can fluke it by doing the basics.

Wolves did it this season.

Is this a serious post?

Believe we need 4 more points to not hit lowest ever points tally. And I think we are finishing with a negative GD
We're not winning the last three games. I thought this was the one we'd most likely grind out a win, half expected a loss, but not a drubbing. This will hurt morale and Brighton will want to put on a show in front of their fans in the last game.

This was another Watford yet we're in this weird position where we can't fall any lower, so he might just see out the month.

Based on today's game clearly he needs 3 more seasons to put a team together. Should get a contract extension by next week.

81 goals conceeded this season so far, thats the most in any season since the early 70's and we still have to play Arsenal, Newcastle, Brighton, and City to play.

I'm perfectly fine with him going anywhere and being a success, as long as he goes.

He's just not cut out for a club the size of United or the Premier League.

73 league games played, only 110 goals scored and 98 feckers conceded + 12 GD

It’s tragic.

Never mind that embarrassing CL campaign and going out of the Europa league last season with a calamitous showing in the quarter finals. We are just a poorly coached and easy to score against mess under this man, with or without injuries.

To put some context on it in relation to goals and GD in the league.

Arsenal F178 A69 +109 GD

Newcastle F146 A89 +57 GD

Aston Villa F124 A99 +25 GD

Brighton F125 A110 +15 GD

We are totally shite and one LC win is not changing my mind. We haven’t progressed, we have regressed and after the money spent in the summer it should be untenable for any manager to survive. INEOS must act.

Just dont see us picking up 4 points to avoid that record. May well get 0 more. We’ll finish 8th.

We can fall further - our injuries probably wont alleviate and we could get drubbed another 4 times. Everyone left to play is better than palace. The cup final could end up a demolition or City could just not really bother playing like we aren’t even worth making an effort against us like they did toward the end of Ole’s tenure, still win by a couple. Dont know whats worse.

INEOS cannot leave him at the helm. He’s a stinking failure, a total loser and they just wont look serious about this project if they let him hangover into the start of it in earnest in the summer. I still think he may be gone tomorrow morning

Plenty have been saying that for a long time. That's why, at the latest, we wanted an interim in a few weeks ago (though it should've been months) to give the guy enough time with the squad to prepare for the final.

If he wins, fair dos, but, right now, it looks like we've just passed the opportunity of ending this disastrous season on a high up, and, before last night, the majority seemed fine with that!

Imagine how bad it would've been had Rashford not been on fire for half a season.

We either build a coherent club where the coach falls in line with the overall strategy designed to succeed across a decade. Or we bring in another Jose screaming at everyone for a short term sugar rush of results. Who then doesn't get what he wants, fails and get sacked. Same old merry go round. It doesn't work.

I’m not looking to do the “short term sugar rush of results” not sure why you think that. We agree that we have to build the club either way, but keeping Ten Hag on is fecking hilariously bad decision making

Man Utd fans have short memories. We sack Tim Hag and we are back to where we were with Ragnick.

This season has been terrible but the unprecedented injuries have played a massive part in that. Regardless of the injuries the media, pundits and rival fans are feasting over the clubs failures and our pathetic fans are buying into their glee and condemnation of our club and manager..

Our failures, not just this season but over the last decade are 100% at the foot of our owners, not Tim Hag who has had to work with utter incompetence across the club since he arrived.

The Glazers will be sitting back tonight probably not overly disappointed with Utd losing 4-0 but probably slightly relieved again that our cesspit of a fanbase will buy into the media slaughtering our manager and our club without pointing the finger of blame at the clear reason why we are where we are. .

I may be in the increasing minority here but I'm also a Utd fan of nearly 50 years and I'm dismayed by the kneejerk, impatience and fickle fanbase who once were revered and respected across the football fraternity but who have become almost as poisonous as the Glazers themselves . It certainly doesnt take a rocket scientist to work out that a manager who inherited a shambles of a club has still been able to get the club to 3 domestic Cup Finals in his first 2 years, something Sir Matt Busby and Sir Alex Ferguson didn't come close to achieve.

Give the current Manager your support and back him. We are better than this as a fanbase.

Hands down the worst manager we’ve had. Insane, suicidal tactics.

For every manager there will be times when their team is suffering with injuries - should we expect to get battered by bottom half table sides every time?

Ludicrous.

It's a weird set of beliefs and something deeply ingrained mentally to still back and believe in Ten Hag at this moment in time. He's failed, and failing so miserably.

I have to admire our fans outside of England, fair fecks to them. I've not been home since early January, I stopped waking up in the middle of the night and staying up late months ago now, just watch it in the morning more often than not. This team is literally not worth losing sleep over. Right now its a lost cause of a side drifting further and further.

The warning signs were there all the way back in that 4-0 defeat at Brentford, he just looked like a fish out of water. He got a lucky run going in the cups and the PL and Rashford playing out of his skin, he even looked to do reasonable business in January with the Sabitzer loan, Casemiro was voted in the FIFPRO team, Varane and Martinez looked solid and Shaw had a great season, Garnaucho came through and looked a game changer from the bench and Casemiro/Eriksen/Bruno midfield for a period of about 6 weeks looked elite, then Eriksen got an injury, Casemiro got sent off in big games, Bruno became more petulant and the decline started from Feb 2023.

This summer we had the worst window any club that just finished 3rd could have, it was obvious the positions the squad needed improving.

If you are getting rid of the two midfield players who have legs like Fred and Sabitzer, you have to replace them with younger like for like midfield players, you needed a pacey young CB, Two mobile versatile midfield players and a right back to replace AWB, we had De Gea and Henderson and we could have kept both of them and saved £47m on A Onana, personally we could have kept Fred and Sabitzer for £15m which is £6m more than Amrabat’s loan Fee. Mason Mount wasn’t needed and could have been signed this summer on a free!

Not Signing Mount, Amrabat and Onana would have freed up £95m after we made the Sabitzer deal permanent.

We could have signed J C Todibo £35m and used the £60m to bid for O Watkins, offered £25m less for Hojlund at £40m which is his value and bought a creative right back like Frimpong for £30m then.

The current squad is not fit for purpose just like the Manager and if any fan thinks 5 players in will help the cause their insane, this club needs £300-400m spent in the next two windows on absolute sure things but also a coach that understands you cannot lose more than 8 or 9 PL games at Man United, come bottom of your CL group, consistently get outplayed by teams who have 1/10th of your resources and expect to be coach the following season?

I don’t like Tuchel, however he’s too much of a winner to put up with stats that ETH seems to have no problems with, ETH will never win the CL or the PL, even if he had the current City Squad, he just ain’t all that so it’s time to do the right thing and sack him asap.

The point is quite simple, every time you stick Dalot on the left back with AWB on the right you get the exact same comments on how it's absolute madness, how they should swap position, ETH is a moron for not seeing it. It's always easy and simple.

You absolutely don’t

I don’t think there’s a single person on this forum who would ever have called for AWB to play left back. It’s just another one of ETH’s insane ideas that he thinks make him look like a genius. And he’s too stubborn to admit he’s wrong. Again.

And honestly it is quite easy and simple. Play your players in positions they’re comfortable and experienced in. You’re already suffering an injury crisis in defence, how is then moving players around into positions they’ve never played going to help that situation? It’s just adding to the mess & confusion. AWB looks completely lost on the left. Which is hardly a surprise considering he looks awkward enough in the position he’s played his whole career in. ETH has been setting this team up to fail all season and this is just another example. He’s completely lost the plot.

You're in pure denial.

Too many fans let their hatred of the Glazers blind them. There is more wrong at the club than just the previous regime. The current manager is also a problem.

The media are generally kind to ten Hag. We have lots of ex players in key positions at both Sky and TNT. You'll rarely ever see Neville, Rio or Keane hammer him. Keane has come the closest recently with his comments about starting to dislike the players and the manager after one of ten Hag's delusional post-match takes.

ten Hag even has Goldbridge backing him. His opinion can have an influence on the younger generation who grew up with social media. He hated Ole, so some of his followers bought into that mindset. He now backs ten Hag, so now they do too. I wonder if that's due to the access he's received from ten Hag's agent. Hmmm.

You're sinking to a new low to defend ten Hag. Sir Matt Busby and Sir Alex Ferguson deserve better than this crap from fans.

This holier than thou persona some fans have is bizarre.

Probably the most annoying thing out of this period is I got banned several times just for being negative about the guy, just to be proven absolutely right about him later on. No one will get me these needless warning points back.

Not like I want to post on RedCafe again after the way I was treated here but it's funny how out of all our post Ferguson coach, I got banned for being negative about the worst of them all.

Oh well, just wanted to say that, which will probably be the last time I ever post here.

I stepped in and took your place, comrade.

Your sacrifice will not be forgotten.

That tonight is in some ways worse than the 7-0 freak result. We deserved to lose this one comfortably, they probably should have scored many more. Totally outclassed for the whole game by a side that traditionally we shouldn't have to worry about. Every game is a struggle for this side.
