Because defending in progressive systems takes work rate, discipline and cohesion. Counter pressing is not the only factor but it’s a major reason Liverpool or City play attacking football and don’t give up chances for fun. We’re not set up to be wide open that’s complete bollocks. Ten Hag’s fault in this is that he didn’t do anything to adjust, especially with the defensive injuries. If you’re counter pressing or pressing when the opposition is playing out from the back, all it takes is 1 or 2 players not being in position and you’re fecked. I wish I was having a laugh when I say this but if he should have at some point earlier in the season said feck it we need to Southgate the rest of the season and regroup in the summer. The players could have had no complaints either even though I’m sure they would.
The team has been wide open from game 1. We had a first choice/close to first choice XI in January and teams like Newport County were able to get off 15+ shots for us.

Again. That would be an insane decision.

INEOS should bring someone in permanently when they know their man. If they can't get their man, look for someone else.

Temporary fixes don't work.

We need long term planning now even if that means pain in the short term.
Then prepare to finish the season outside of the CL positions and with no FA cup.

Hopefully today is the day. Worst manager in my lifetime.

Lost more games than Bournemouth in the league. Negative goal difference. Plays with no midfield which absolutely destroys the stamina of the players. Finished bottom of the table with a group consisting of no hopers like Galatasaray and Copenhagen.

Yet he was defended for months because he won a Carabao Cup  and I was told standards haven't dropped

Just can’t see a way forward with him. We (likely) have an even lower bar of top 5 this season and we’re 9 points off with 8 games remaining and Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle still to play.

The annoying Thing is that I totally believe both Villa and Spurs will drop points, however we have just chucked away 2 points at Brentford (we didn't deserve any) and 3 at Chelsea. Hoping for them to bottle it yet we bottled it better!

Yeah but they're low quality shots right?

Checking out for the rest of the season. I love this club, but this is starting to take a toll on my mental health.

We go again with new manager next season. Adios.

I am really mixed on him.

He has circumstances whith all the injuries, with the lack of choices, but at the same time, he's still the manager and responsible for all this.

Also, if he leaves, who can replace him ?

We are always in the same discussion with players playing badly, some of them behave badly and it's always the manager's fault.

To be honest, I don't really know what to think, or what should be the best thing to do.

The job looks to big for any manager in the planet except Klopp and Pep. Also, we have a really poor squad, full of crying babies.

Agreed, but I'd like to think we can do City in the FA cup final if we have a more compact and organised manager.

City at Wembley. Could park the bus, I guess. Usually I don't mind caretaker managers but RR's put me off. Suppose Steve Maclaren could do a job.

But ETH is the one who continually picks him and even renewed his contract. It's also on ETH to sub underperforming players, which he failed to do with Dalot.
Dalot has been good all season, I was only referring to last night. Who the hell could he have brought on for Dalot? We had 2 centre back injuries, during the game alone

He’s trying to create a united specific brand of football, frantic, chaotic, relentless attacking. High scoring, exciting matches that ideally we come out on top of. I like that idea but it’s not coming together at the moment because of personnel and some odd decisions. The defence is obliterated, we had no defensive midfield by the end of the game (and with Case’s legs gone don’t really have one anyway), Rashford is completely off his game.

We should stick with it and see how he gets on with a full squad + additions

Got home from that totally depressed, still feeling the same.

A terrible start and an even worse ending. Our football around the 70-85 minute mark was really good and controlled but I felt we wasted a clear opportunity to kill them off. They’d gone and we were passing the ball around them at will but didn’t carve out much. I could definitely see them equalising late on as we looked so open down our left but no one could have seen that winner coming.

Anthony’s best game yet. He had a couple of one on ones inside the box in the second half that he didn’t make the most of but his general play was excellent. With him the more thinking time he has the worse he is, he’s far better when he plays more instinctively. Only positive of the night is that it could be a turning point for him.

Ultimate "benefit of the doubt manager". The ONLY reason he is still considered as man for the job is because there are multiple (valid) excuses. Notice there is NOTHING he can be praised for since the cup win (unless you believe relying on 18 and 19yo players to bail you out is the way to go).

This is my thoughts too. I've pretty much lost hope in him now though, such a shame as I was really optimistic with the level of improvement we had after the rocky start last season until the Carabao Cup final. Just assumed at that point that we were on the way up again.

To be fair there has been some occasional spells in games where we've played very cohesive and entertaining attacking football, but then we just seem to shit the bed as soon as anything goes against us. Last night was similar to the the Copenhagen and Galatasaray away games where we have ended up with a terrible result despite playing some great football.

For the millionth time, I’d like someone to tell me what shape of a team he is trying to instil cause I have no answers for my own question. He has bought so poorly, INEOS have to sort this out

No point in getting rid now. Let him finish out the season and hand him his p45 once it's over.

He dismissed this as being important after the game last night, incidentally.
It is ridiculous. We showed we were fourth ranking before this game in goals conceded. Everyone is talking to each other after, we are good and we have good defending as a team, a good goalkeeper and a good back four so I cannot do anything with such stats.
It's not just that he doesn't know how to fix it - he apparently genuinely doesn't believe that teams peppering the goal with shots is a problem in the first place. I'd like to think he's not actually that stupid and has simply completely lost his head at this point, but it's worrying when seemingly every other human being on the planet can see how bad this is and he's publically saying everything's fine.

Not having a proper left back for pretty much the entire season and Martinez out as well, it’s going to have a massive impact and the quality we have to replace them just isn’t good enough.

There’s no overlap for the left winger and that also hinders the winger would play (and possibly partly explain the difference between rashford last season vs this one - I do say that tongue in cheek as there’s obviously much more to it than simply shaw being unable to play).

that being said, the shots ok target / goals conceded ratio and our goals scored is just a shocking stat that can’t be ignored and lies on his shoulders.

was hugely optimistic when he was appointed but he’s had long enough to get the players to play how he wants and it’s obviously not worked. Writing is ok the wall

The worst thing about Ten Hags United is the mental weakness. When we go behind we never look like winning and when we go ahead we just hold on for grim life and hope for the best.

I knew we were in trouble yesterday as soon as we went 3-2 up and then immediately started passing backwards not forwards. We had dominated the game for an hour but then shit the bed and handed Chelsea the momentum back instead of killing the game off like any other decent side would have.

I made my mind up about Ten Hag after the Champions League debacle this season.

You mentioned that you are joking but there are way too many people that are stuck with pre-cooked trendy tactics such has overlaps from fullbacks or high press. Neither of these things are necessities and in both cases most teams have to engineer the same outcome without using the same tools. As an example overlaps for wide attackers in a 4231 doesn't have to be done by fullbacks, it can be and is often done by the central attacking midfielder or by one of the CM with the AM, a fullback or the opposing wide attacker covering the space left. Also teams often have asymmetric systems.

One of the biggest issue that I have with United this season and also last season is that tactically we are shamefully limited. We poorly use and rely on extremely basic tactical ideas that do not make sense as a whole and aren't even executed properly.

We didn't deserve to lose that, little unlucky you could say, but the flip side is we were incredibly lucky to get out of Brentford with a point on Saturday.

Better performance, but all the known issues that have been there all season were there in abundance. Incredibly open midfield, unable to keep the ball, press bypassed far to easily.

Another game with a ridiculous amount of shots against.

C/L is definetley gone now. Europa and conference league even look like there on rocky ground.

The end is nigh surely now.

I’m getting really tired of the excuses people pull out of their arses after every loss.

I’m exhausted by “injuries” “players attitude” “Southgate is the only option” “unlucky” it’s absolutely baffling we’ll be in the same position next season with this manager.

I am sold on ETH going now.

Five reasons.
1. How open we actually are all the time, chelsea passed at will, Brentford passed at will. Our goal
Difference speaks for itself.

2. No other ‘top team’ would have stopped playing against the weakest Chelsea team
In years after going 3-2 up, we didn’t even try and attack once until it was 3-3.

3. This amount of defeats do not happen
By accident. 1 or 2 bad results but not this amount.

4. The signings. His choices.

5. The lack of style and consistency.

I wanted to give him time and he’s had it.

I did not see the full game but a 25min highlights package and I am struggling to see how he said we controlled the game!

Torn on Ten Hag, whilst I have been in the camp of give him another year, its hard to ignore how exposed the defence is. Whilst trying to implement his style made sense to try it during the season, now is the crunch time in terms of champs league qualification. I feel he should have reverted to a more safe tactic e.g. 4 2 3 1 to see out the season and then go again next season with his tatctic and some new players. It's getting hard to defend him now though with a ll the shots we are conceding and no action being taken by him.

Can’t just look at Chelsea and say, let’s never sign numerous players in a window because it didn’t work for them.
The one thing that is abundantly clear is we aren’t winning any major trophy (league/Europe) with this bunch of cowards. Plenty of them need shipping out before the culture begins to change. You don’t remove some mice from a house and hope the rest behave themselves. You get rid of them all. I’d also like to point out I don’t have any mice in my house, I swear!

So what do you suggest? Full scorched earth sell the entire squad and start from scratch?

Because people have been blaming ''this squad'' for letting managers down for 10 years, disregarding the fact we've had about 3 different squads in that time. There's even some that subscribe to the theory that the ''toxic culture'' will persist if we only sell some of the squad. Ralf talked about open heart surgery 2 years ago, we've done that. About 16 senior players have left since Ten Hag came in and he's signed 10-12 to replace them. Yet here we are still shit and arguably worse than when he came, so maybe the players aren't the major problem. Maybe we just need a manager capable of instilling a culture and a winning mentality with the majority of the existing players.

Can’t just look at Chelsea and say, let’s never sign numerous players in a window because it didn’t work for them.

Yes you can, Chelsea are a textbook example of why it's a stupid idea to try to sell an entire squad and buy a new one in a relatively short space of time.

I did not see the full game but a 25min highlights package and I am struggling to see how he said we controlled the game!

There was five minutes at the end where we did control the game better than we generally do. Otherwise it was a chaotic game that relied on both teams being absolutely inept.

Europa conference looks depressing

We might win that next season with a more competent manager.

But we could also fall lower than 6th. Our performances are starting to catch up to us with us dropping points.
