It’s always going to be tough because City are a top side but they aren’t playing well and have lost the last 2 away games. It was clear the only chance of a result was counter attack and he completely killed that with the team he chose. Baffling selection, must be one of the worst starting 11’s we’ve ever fielded in a PL derby match
Yeah, I didn’t like the team at all.

This season is a write off. He did okay last season, and has had to deal with so much off the pitch shite this year. I would give him one more season to try and fix things. We were never going to win or compete for the league anyway, just continue the rebuild. Play some kids, no pressure, see what happens. One step back this season and hopefully two steps forward next season.

Anyone who thought we were contenders for anything this season are deluded. We are 3-4 seasons behind City. At least.

I wasn’t expecting a league challenge but we should be looking to progress at the very least. Going backwards, or in our current case falling off a cliff shouldn’t be shrugged off our season looks done in October that’s a disaster, this is a worse start than Jose and Ole and they were fired.

Plus it’s not so easy to just give him time, that’s a commitment of possibly 200m (or whatever the summer budget will be) to blow on yet more former colleagues.

I think we lose to Newcastle this week knocking us out of the cup and I think we will finish 3rd in our CL group also. This has the potential to fast turn into a complete farce

Because Maguire and Varane "are not good on the left". So he benched better defender for one who was 5th choice 2 weeks ago.
He demanded third left back and then ended playing with Lindelof there.
Spends 100 mil on right winger and then plays Bruno there.
Spends 70 mil euros on Mount and after one month he doesn't know how to use him.
Starts McTominay (who was 6th choice midfielder) 4 games in a row despite general game is suffering.

As i said before this game. He is in desperation mode. He ditched all his plans regarding lineup and style and he is just trying to survive next game. Which is best way to fail. This is just slow death now. We will grind some wins but God help us against any decent side which has a plan how to play.

Exactly. And it's hard to feel passionate about all of this or the club when you know that nothing will be done about it or at least way too late as the owners don't give a feck. A single performance like that at Bayern and your job is at risk. We've had our season full of it

Thats exactly the guys point yet E

Ole was finally getting a decent side together, Ronaldo was a disaster for that side, which with Carvani leading the line would have been a decent side, not title winners but a step in the right direction, as for 3 major signings a year I remember Jose ranting at the cameras in the summer of 2018 a season after he finished 2nd in the league and 1 season after winning both the UEFA Cup and the League Cup that he was allowed to bring in just Fred and 18 year old Dalot, when he was desperate to strengthen midfield following the retirement of Carrick and sale of Fellaini and Daley Blind.

As for Potter he was a huge success at Chelsea wasn't he.

ETH is the right man at the right time, he is already investing in the academy, Hojlund will be a great striker, Mainoo is the future, Martinez is a giant, Amad, Hannibal, Pellestri, but the position he started from was so low it was never going to be fixed in one or 2 season, ETH has already embarked on the development of his own Class of 92, I for one hope the Glazers, INEOS or whoever owns the club in the coming years have the guts to stick the course.
Hannibal doesn’t play at all anymore, Amad hasn’t played a game for us since ETH arrived, Mainoo has played a total of like 200 minutes of professional football and Pellistri has basically shown to be far from good enough. To call them the new class of 92 is incredibly delusional.

There is also basically zero indication that ETH is trying to build a new, young team that will compete for year. He literally goes for the older, more experienced player whenever he has the chance and has not successfully integrated any academy players into our senior team, except maybe Garnacho but even then he’s hardly being given many opportunities to start either.

I’d actually be OK with these results if we were trying to build a new team. We are not. We are building a team around players that will need to be replaced a couple of years after we bought them like Casemiro, Eriksen, Amrabat.

He isn’t suited to the PL, and the footy’s dull…

But they’ll probably keep him on until Jim Brexit’s in and then bring in Potter who seems to fit Ratchilffe’s outlook and ambitions.

I actually think Potter will be popular at Utd and do quite well, relatively speaking.

Potter. That is not happing.

Ratcliffe just hired a De Zerbi disciple at Nice, who are now sitting top of the league.

At the end of last season you were all singing his praises, 10 games later with the worst injury record I can ever remember in 50 years of supporting United, were we have barely been able to field the same team 2 weeks in a row and your calling for his head it beggars belief.

We're not upset at losing to City. We're upset because our squad is better than Palace, Forest and Wolves and we're barely scraping wins against them.

Also if having literally 3-4 first team players out is literally the worst injury crisis in 50 years then we must have had amazing luck so far. I seem to remember us having a lot more injuries in the past though.

Bingo, the fact he put Scott in the team ahead of his signing Mount for the last few games proves he's on his last legs and has thrown everything out of the window. He's trying to save himself by relying on the old guard since his signings flopped or he doesn't have time anymore to wait for them to start performing. He's exploding. It's just a matter of time now.

It’s just not working for him is it. This job breaks everyone and perhaps he’s not the one. This football is godawful, hard to see how it gets better.

This is true. And, what Everton fans experienced over last few years now seems not really that far for us, actually. Some people here will lecture me that this club is elite with the expectation and standard really high. The reality is that expectations and standards are purely in the air, virtual, imagined. By this rate, in a few seasons, the club will be in the relegation battle when all financial strength has been wasted.

I think he's lost the dressing room...

I'm starting to think he is a manager who wasn't used to having a big budget and simply went on a spending spree with no plan whatsoever. Almost like the guys who win the lottery and end up dead broke.

Can we be worse? When Ten Hag came in it was better. By that logic never changing the manager should be the best course of action always.
Not really, is it? That doesn’t follow from what I said, does it? I said it is claimed that changing the manager is going to make us better, without doubt. Clearly there is doubt. We’ve changed manager many times and are no better. Are we?

Changing manager might not be the answer every time. On the tenuous assumption that some due diligence was undertaken when we appointed this guy, the club knows that he is not a mug or an idiot or a fraud. We also know it because he’s done a good job elsewhere. He’s not doing very well just now but my argument is that the right person will not be error free - he will make many mistakes, will have bad spells, will disappoint and upset us, will sometimes look like the wrong man and yet will still, in the end, be the right man.

Who do you see Brexit Jim bringing in?

De Zerbi, because he see's how well Farioli is doing at Nice.

If you spend 1.5bil and you need to change the manager, you bring in the best man out there.

But more likely, Paul Mitchell comes in and speaks with ETH. If they are on the same page, ETH continues with a couple more Mitchell lead transfer windows to fix this squad.

The injury excuse is tiresome. Injuries are part of the game. Your job as a manager is to manage a squad not 11 players. Get over it.

It’s just not working for him is it. This job breaks everyone and perhaps he’s not the one. This football is godawful, hard to see how it gets better.
The vision (at least short term) from him has been shown blatantly wrong. There is no other way to excuse it anymore. It’s sad situation as we all know everyone can misjudge and make wrong decisions. The hope for me is that those can still be mitigated and turned.

De Z would be great, but almost seems too ‘cool’ for where Utd currently are.

Erik is done mate, he’s losing the dressing room and isn’t suited to PL football.

He’s a goner, but as I said, they’ll wait until Brexit Jim steps in.

I reckon he'll be done by February:

10 games played
Won 5
Lost 5
11 GS
16 GA

He's 100% being sacked this season, I do hope he's able to change it but I can't see it. Injuries are relevant but the tactics and performances are substandard.
I can’t argue with the facts in this post and I agree with some of your opinions. I don’t think he’ll be sacked though. There’s enough time for us to improve a bit, enough to get up into the top 6, and build some sort of platform for next year. It’s not what we wanted for this season but by this time next year it might not seem so bad.

I'm starting to think he is a manager who wasn't used to having a big budget and simply went on a spending spree with no plan whatsoever. Almost like the guys who win the lottery and end up dead broke.
Two things. First, he hasn't lost the dressing room yet, because of the comebacks. Second is I do think he had a plan, but it was naive and he just doesn't get the PL.

And they don’t “wonder” how the next manager will solve everything, they simply state with conviction that he will, just by being “better”.
And they will say the next manager is the worst since SAF retired and the cycle continues

On the dutch paper site AD, there are quotes from Ten Hag talking to VIAPLAY saying we will never play like how he played at ajax, that's not why he came here. "The way we played at AJAX, you won't ever see that here." "The player material decides how we play. That's why I can not let this team play the way I did at ajax. I have to, I can't play the same way here. It's also not in the DNA of Manchester United. Ajax football is very specific, here we have to play more direct. We have the type of players for that."

He speaks like at United we do not accept or want Ajax type of football and he is forced to play a different brand... I'm sure many on the caf were dreaming of our team playing like his Ajax team and that it was a big reason many wanted him here for... Is this shit football and his player acquirement strategy just a confused Ten Hag thinking we want hoofball? :wenger:

Appointing De Z would solve nothing if we expect him to challenge for the league because he won’t be able do it with this squad. He just won’t. He would be sacked before he gets the time the job needs.

I agree, I think De Zerbi would be brilliant. From what i have read, he works his team hard in training, especially on positioning and set routines.
Probably a massive departure from what ETH does with United squad. Some may not like it, but he doesn't take any shit and would pander to the big names in our squad.

I dont care that we have players missing, we look like a badly coached team. I don't think he has been able to implement any of his footballing philosophy's at United, first season or this term.

I dont know if he has "lost the dressing room" but you can see he isnt getting anything out of this team. Two and a half months into the season and bar a League Cup game Vs Palace B, we have not had one good performance. It is quite shocking.

It's polite way to say he can't coach Rashford/Bruno, & United training facility is bad mate.
It's also his fault for brining luxury players like Antony instead of systemic players. EPL prefer wingers who can stretch play outwide it's always been, not some one note inside forward who has 0 decision marking

Except Martinez, Shaw and Hojlund, the whole starting 11 needs replacing lets be honest.

Our “best” players which are Bruno and Rashford are shockingly inconsistent and until we fix that we won’t be a top team.
Trouble is with so many holes in the squad, we’ll never get around to replacing Bruno and Rashford.

I don't see why Shaw shouldn't be replaced too, he's very injury prone and has had long spells of being massively underwhelming.

I’m open to a new DoF but why do people keep throwing Mitchell’s name around? He’s not the best out there

What if he read the Guardiola thread on here, and decided Manchester United fans hate that type of football? :nervous:

I get what he's saying though. Ajax have so much institutional knowledge on how to play possession football. At United we've never been that kind of side.

Echoes my thoughts

This post seems to be going down the route that it’s not his fault because the squad is shit but then also name 5 players (Antony, Mount, Eriksen, Casimero, Amrabat) as examples of the squad being shit despite ETH being the one who brought them in.

Yeah that's basically him saying that the club won't back him to the extent of getting rid of Rashford/Bruno so he's forced to adjust his whole philosohpy and style of play around them. Hence, why they are undroppable. I genuineley think the higher ups warn managers against dropping certain players at this point.

Rangnick/Mourinho both basically said feck it and went against that and both ended up gone soon after. Also funny how all the briefs from the club seemed to go crazy around both once they went in that direction.

It might sound like a conspiracy but ultimately, the glazers are all about money and they care more about poster boys than actual ability/performance.

Example: https://talksport.com/football/432398/man-united-transfer-news-pogba-messi-sale-glazers/ .I'd be willing to bet hundreds on it being the exact same scenario with Rashford. Their poster boys not playing is bad for business, specially when you just awarded them a massive contract last season.

Maybe we don't have the same level of technical player to play the Ajax way, granted. Most of his teams had come though the Ajax academy, so they were made to play the Ajax way.

But there is noone at United saying you must play a certain way. Don't tell me Murtough or Arnold are telling me Ten Hag has to play counter attacking football.

United fans would be happy with a team that could string 3 passes together.

He just cant drill this team. Existing players or the ones he has signed. And now the excuses are coming.

I don’t think that’s been interpreted right. He wanted FDJ, couldn’t get him but signed other players from Ajax, is trying to set the system up quite similar to Ajax. Is trying to acquire the players with the profile needed to play similar to Ajax.

At the same time, I’m sure he set out with the idea of playing to the strengths of the players he has at his disposal while also trying to play attacking football.

Therein lies the problem. He is trying to do all of this at once. Or, more charitably, he is trying to morph the system and the player roster to enable Ajax style football whilst in the meantime still getting results with the players he already has.

How can you start Lindelof at LB over a fit LB on the bench. Baffles me his decision making. Gonna cost him his job

The „not his players“ excuse is pathetic. After seeing his buys and their performances, God help us if we ever field a team of 11 ETH players. We will get relegated.
When he came he had only Bruno as a starting midfielder. McFred were sub level. He got enough money to buy 2-3 suitable/good midfielders to complement (or for people who hate Bruno let’s say to displace) him, and he buys Casimiro and Mount for huge money (+ Eriksen on a free). Sorry, but that’s his midfield and Bruno is his captain. He took the captaincy from Maguire and gave it to Bruno. And then there’s the Antony signing. So don’t even start about buying more „ETH players“.

The is nothing direct from the football we have played for a long, long time. Blokes pissed.
