But the fact is that system was never going to work against Brighton who play with attacking full backs and wingers. Very strange decision.
To be honest, we played well at the beginning and if we scored first or even got to 1-1 at HT, it might have been different.

For me, it's not so much the system but the fact we crumbled under pressure yet again. That and players visibly getting preferential treatment, like Rashford.

Think I'm always gonna have the painful "what if we'd actually got De Jong last season". Spose the realist in me says he would also have forgotten how to pass eventually, but still.

Spurs Away (2023 version) Arsenal Away and Brighton...when the team is full or injuries and in bad form...Eek!

Luckily after Bayern the opposition looks more beatable on paper.
That’s not going to matter. Any team in the top 3 divisions in England would have scored th goals Brighton scored against us today. There was nobody near the ball throughout the entire buildup. If he can’t fix this first he won’t last the season.

Pep couldn’t teach the City side in inherited and he never got criticised for that, so why should Ten Hag be? You can’t polish a turd. As if Pep would magically turn Scott McTominay in to prime Sergio Busquets.

I really would love to see Guardiola manage United and see the comments as he fails spectacularly just like every other manager here. I don’t know what else it’d take to make people understand that successful clubs aren’t built by a single man, and definitely not in the modern era. I disagree with plenty of Ten Hag’s decisons too, but this lunacy cannot continue. We will cycle through another 10 managers and still not win anything, the club is not built to win.
Difference between Pep and others is Pep would simply not play Mctominay and these other garbage players at all. He'd go and find players in the reserves pending the transfer window where he'd sign his preferred players. He would not persist with dreck and cry woe is me. For all the heat Pep gets on his spending, i'd trust him far more to give good youth players much more of a chance than any manager who has managed United in the last 10 years. Rico Lewis and Cole Palmer have far more big game experience than any of our youth players. If anyone had a ready-made excuse to not play youth players it would be Pep. Yet he gave both those players more than their fair share of consistent chances.

Why persist with players not up to it when there is a youth system in place and good players in the system? Dan Gore was on the bench today, Hannibal was on the bench , came on and scored our only goal of the game. Give young players a chance.

I don't know what to say to this. How is he a 'lost case' when he got us our first trophy in years and 3rd? Without an actual striker and with all the other frankly unprecedented bullshit he's had to deal with it. And we're 5 games into season 2?

A lost case! Staggering, intergalactic levels of hyperbole.

League cup mate, which is next to the community shield a mickey mouse cup. He would have lost against Pep, as usual.

It may sound hyperbloic now, but it will trickle down eventually to you as well. Give it time, if you dont see it now, you will soon. Just watch closely.

He of course wants to bring standard and discipline, but how does he get it out of this group of players that is collectively incapable of playing with the mentality he requires? Right now it feels like no manager in the world can do that
I wouldn't go so far in extrapolating this early in the season.
Are you forgetting that Mourinho won the Carling Cup (or whatever it was called then) and Europa league in his debut season with us…

edit: also…standard and discipline? Are you serious?? especially the latter- one of our most talented players literally can’t be bothered to train while pocketing 350k a week
Mourinho did not finish 3rd in his first season, and Ten Hag never bought the player you refer to. That player was a chronic underperformer from a previous regime, under a previous CEO.

He should have then just played McTominay with Casemiro and dropped Erikson for either Garnacho or Pellestri on the right wing. We look more dangerous when we play out wide so no idea why we restricted ourselves.
Not to mention that it killed us as a counterpressing force and had us conceding overloads on the wings from which all the goals came. The fullbacks, Lamptey in particular, had a field day.

De Zerbi is not the answer. Great footballing environment from top to bottom is.

Agreed, and that doesn't happen overnight. It does seem like there's a desire to improve from our new footballing structure, there have been a few great posts on here detailing the changes and greater attention to that side of things post-Woodward, which is promising, but it'll take time.

We always seem to start brightly in games. The fact is we are more dangerous out wide and a diamond restricts our width. I would have rather have Garnacho starting on the right.
I’d love for there to be a point to debate things like this, but when there is no effort or teamwork none of this matters. There is no tactics or formation that can compensate for the amount of jogging present for all of their goals.

Well ETH has him NOW. I don’t buy into all this ‘inherited squad’ crap in situations like this. Do you think Sancho will even dream of not coming to training under Pep?

We're doing this again are we?

Glazers must love our fanbase.

Has ETH being able to spend a lot of money? Do the Glazers pick the team, the tactics? Right now, manager just not good enough on and off the pitch, he is carrying an ego that is totally unearned

To be fair we limped through the second half of that season. It ended well but it was pretty grim stuff at the time and lots of talk of fatigue (ie players not being bothered). Mourinho is no slouch anyway.
I'm happy with Ten Hag for what its worth, though i haven't seen todays game beyond the score yet.

True but it just feels so hopeless right now. How can players in a Man Utd shirt play with such lack of energy and spirit?!

This club is dying, it’s a dinosaur, on its knees wilting from top to bottom and we can’t keep pinning the blame on the manager alone. ETH takes his share of the blame for on pitch performances as do the coaches and players, but its the owners, the staff, the culture, the malaise that have us performing the way we are and being the laughing stock we have become.

It's the most annoying thing. I like ETH and want him to stay but we already have people saying "wouldn't be surprised he walks". As if he's somehow above all this and as if he would actually do that in a million years.
For whatever reasons, there are people in this forum that genuinely believe that ten Hag is there with Klopp, and even Pep.

It would be as absurd as thinking that Martial is there with peak Messi and Ronaldo, but it is how it is.

We’ve all seen this story before. And we know exactly how it ends.

Rightly or wrongly, this is the beginning of the end.

Why did it work up until their goal? Because the players were actually trying hard for the first 20 minutes and then fell apart mentally.

De Zerbi and I think Gross said in their post match interviews that they struggled a bit at the start because our change of system surprised them and it was not what they had planned for. Once Brighton settled and figured it out, they started keeping the ball a lot easier.

I like ten Hag and keep backing him but he is digging his own grave. Strange decisions and communication on and off the pitch.

Also I would argue we should have spent the money for Onana, Mount and Hojlund better.

Rashford is a good player but I do not see him as a winger, he is not able to deliver in the build up and passing. Needs to be turned into a striker.

And Bruno needs to go to the bench. It is crazy how often he gives the ball away, this is something teams like Brighton just don’t do.

I keep looking for the white text in these posts

And this, in turn, will encourage shit like Maguire not to move because they know they will get chances to stink up the place. Why not, say, play Dan Gore as a second 6 besides Casemiro seeing as the latter is struggling to cover ground? Like today he played the diamond just to avoid starting Pellistiri or Garnacho and we paid the price.

That covers it for me. Until they're working their ass off and fighting for 90 minutes i find it hard to be critical.

Keep. I am still yet to see him fail when he's got everything going for him.

Yes we should be playing much better with what we have, and it's concerning. However he's had to deal with so much shit, and the current injuries are the cherry on top, plus having three RW out with disciplinary issues is unheard of.

How often did we get the ball in their third? Or by the center of the pitch? There were times even at 0-1 when they were passing the ball and basically waiting for our players to come at them. And I'm not saying it's a work rate issue, it's more of a tactical/individual quality of our players problem.
That is a common element in Brighton's game. They sit and wait for you to press. The correct tactic is cutting options and passing lanes.

What are you on about? I've never said he inherited a crap squad. I said he inherited a bad apple.

Same thing. Either way I don’t think this would happen amongst the likes of GOATs such as Pep and Fergie

Yes, we are on the right path and it takes time. But I do worry about the Glazers. With them as owners we might not get a proper setup. Only half way there.

Same and it is probably for many others as well. This was a shocking performance all around.
Yea man. I'm so disappointed. I didn't feel like this even when we got spanked 7-0 against Liverpool. I don't want to say and don't think that anyone seriously does it but my mind always goes back to thinking he wanted to sabotage this match. There is literally no other way I can describe his decisions today. Being stubborn against Sancho I'll give you that but why play Bruno as central defender? Why not bring Maguire? Being stubborn with that system and didn't change anything until we already lost that match. Bringing on Martial when we were chasing a game. He was as invisible as McT today. Didn't notice him at all.

Feckkkkk. The more I think about it the more angry I get and I truly believed Ten Hag was doing a good job. So many mind boggling decisions today. :(

Pep would take out his chequebook and sign great players which Erik hasn’t so far, sign great players.

He doesn't seem frustrated enough with the poor performances. Van gaal used to say we had played well when we had one shot on target all game.

That is a common element in Brighton's game. They sit and wait for you to press. The correct tactic is cutting options and passing lanes.

If that happened only against Brighton it would of been acceptable but when do we ever intercept the ball in the opposition half, regardless of who do we play against.

Pep would look at his leading players first if they were performing like ours are. Absolutely ludicrous to even mention McTominay or any other rotational player for that matter. Pep stripped the likes of Foden, Bernardo Silva and even Aguero of their status as regular starters, and flogged Cancelo off in the blink of an eye. Wtf is the point of talking about McTominay right now?
