Eric Bailly | BBC say signing is imminent

Can't help but feel that signing another first choice centre back (has to be first choice for this money) who can't really pass the ball either means Mourinho REALLY doesn't want his defenders to play from the back or is going to bench Smalling and sign two defenders.

What do you mean he can't pass the ball?

Wrapping up a deal so early and without any fuss.. I've missed these.

I do not understand how you have come to that conclusion, he is far superior to the four year older Smalling on the ball for example.
Haha wow ok, three replies on this already. I'm only ever seen him play once and have skim-read this thread before replying. Just read that post on the first page that passing was one of his weaknesses and was surprised we'd be after a defender of that ilk. If that is complete BS and he is good on the ball then fantastic.

From the FourFourTwo article on him from 6 weeks ago:
"He’ll certainly need to improve his passing out from the back, too, with Bailly generally looking to play a simple ball to his centre-back partner."

I think there might be another CB. Think Jones will go, maybe Rojo, maybe Blind.

Why? Rojo is LB. Jones is a sicknote, but we need numbers in there. Blind is gone.

RB: Darmian, Valencia
LB: Shaw, Rojo
CB: Smalling, Bailly, Jones, new CB

I dont see us selling 2 defenders

It amazes me how people can write that he isn't good in the ball, when probably the only one we have comparable to him on the ball at the moment is Blind.

Bailly is deceptively good on the ball ffs, he is better on the ball than a big unit like him really should be. And he is still only 22. Smalling is 26 and tbf he cant touch Bailly when it comes to on the ball skills.

Rojo is awful. Also we are presuming it is Smalling and A.N. Other. None of us know precisely what Jose will do. We are all guessing.

Varela should also be in the mix. He's definitely a Mou type player.

I hope it's not in the same way Liverpool fans think Sakho is good on the ball.

Thought this was a general thread for a long time. His name is completely unfamiliar for me.

I consider myself fairly well acquainted with the old football these days, but I literally hadn't heard of him yesterday, and now he's going for €40m.

Mate, Sakho is Cannavaro and Nesta in a combined package if you decide to listen to the scousers.

Bailly is the real deal. He is really good on the ball and what impresses me the most is how comfortable he is with long balls on his left foot, while having the right foot as his preferred one.

The only player we have in CB that can touch him on ball skills at the moment is Blind, and then I am talking about the preferred foot, not the secondary one.

Guessing they look at his average pass completion, saw it was lower than Smalling's and decided that way: http://www.squawka.com/comparison-m...rs/tackles_won/tackles_lost/interceptions#avg

Stones - 89%
Vertonghen - 88%
Blind - 84%
Smalling - 82%
Bailly - 77%

Well played. Now get Pogba and Ibrahimovic sorted while you're at it.
Already had Ibra, so that's obviously why that seems to be a done deal too. Went with Pjanic though. Can see that happening now within a month.

So do you guys reckon it'll be worth buy a shirt with his name on the back? I want to get the name of our best CB-buy of the summer on the new home shirt, so I can store it in my closet and never use it.

Wow the speed of this transfer is a good sign, Mourinho isn't messing about. Moyes and Van Gaal arrived well into the summer after a World Cup or going straight on tour and our transfer business was tedious and dragged on and on till deadline day after wasting so much time.

Yeah, then they probably do not consider the slow maticulous way we have of building up from the back with sidewards passes, Bailly mainly passes forward. When Villareal looks for an outlet to carry the ball out from the defence they give it to Bailly.

People here f4p themselves silly over "attaking the space" skills and ball carrying skills like Renato Sanches posess, this guy is all about that.

LB: Shaw, CBJ, Blind
CB: Smalling, Bailly, Blind, TFM
RB: Darmian, Valencia

I'd definitely keep Blind. Even with him this looks a bit light on CB.

Sell Rojo, Jones, and Varela, they aren't good enough.

My Football Manager chief scout thinks that he would be an excellent signing for Middlesbrough!

Sadly that is the extent of my knowledge about this guy

There's a difference between being comfortable on the ball and being a capable distributor. From what I've seen, Bailly is comfortable on the ball but his passing still needs a fair amount of work.

Also, as much as I love him, Smalling's a very low bar to set in terms of technical ability. If you're looking for a partner for Smalling, you're not looking for someone who's better than him technically, you're looking for someone who's strong enough technically to be able to compensate for his glaring weaknesses there. That's why Blind was deployed there (the left-footed stuff was secondary to that). I would agree that our transfer activity at CB doesn't end with Bially for that reason.

Valencia-Smalling-Bailly-Shaw

would already be the fastest backline in the league. High line city.

I like that defence. Hopefully Mourinho does the same thing to our attack and midfield. Imagine watching a United side who actually look like professional athletes for a change

Not 100% convinced Mourinho is...

Always had big hopes for him, ever since I heard his name. 15 minutes ago.

anyone posted the necessary youtube vids of him in action yet?
Someone has already made the "welcome to Manchester" version - I hope this one works out better than the (very impressive) Anderson/Nani vids
