English cricket thread

Well that was a disappointing end to the day, clearly Gloucestershire fully deserved it though. Another couple of strong performances from Payne who should be involved more with England.

Hopefully not another season where Somerset finish runners-up in everything! T20 side needs a bit of a refresh now, too many good youngsters coming through that haven't had much of a chance in this format with Rew the obvious example.

England have somehow thrown away what looked to be a score of 380+ to a load of part-time spinners.

That looked out to me, thought worth a review.

I will almost certainly be wrong

How on earth has Travis Head turned into an okayish player in a fecking beast in like two years.

Banton hobbling out to bat on 3 occasions has won that game, great stuff. The dream of that first championship lives on!

No doubt they'll lose at Lancashire next week now
:annoyed:

Well done to Surrey, to be fair they are a level above everyone else. A nice way for Alec Stewart to depart as well.

We're back to being a pretty crap white ball side aren't we?
Root and Buttler coming back get the batting into a reasonable spot. The bowling however is a big problem.

England play like a team that barely gets to play 50 over cricket domestically. I think it really shows in the younger players.

Before this series began I felt as though winning one match would be an achievement but it looks like they might be needing the weather to avoid a 5-0 defeat. It's just a complete mis-match to be honest, world champions who've now won 14 ODIs in a row against a group of players thrown together with barely any experience in the format.

And there's the problem, the ECB have completely neglected the 50-over format so we're now entering an era where most players will barely play in it before getting picked for England. Yesterday's side for example;

Salt - made his List A debut 9 years ago and still only played 16 games compared to 21 ODIs
Duckett - more experienced and no surprise he looks the most comfortable
Jacks - 22 games outside of ODIs, no idea when the last one of them was
Brook - 32 career games, 17 of them ODIs
Smith - 19 career games, 4 of them ODIs
Livingstone - experienced enough that he should be doing better but 55 games in 9 years still isn't a huge amount
Bethell - 16 career games before this series
Carse - 25 career games, 16 of them ODIs
Rashid
Potts - 16 career games, 6 of them ODIs
Stone - made his List A debut 12 years ago, played just 35 times since then

You could argue that 50-over cricket is the most difficult format to get right and basically the entire squad with one or two exceptions is learning how to play it at the highest level. Until that changes I think it's likely they will continue to struggle.

£165 the cheapest ticket on days 1-3 at Lords for the India test match next year

Get fecked.

The Test team do kind of play 50 over cricket now though so maybe that helps to mitigate the sparse fixture list a bit?

That's one of the most unsatisfying DRS decisions I've seen. As far as I was concerned not a single part of the grounded boot was behind the line, but the video official says "I can see something behind the line". If he said "not conclusive, stay with your decision" then OK. But to state that positively just feels weird.

That England top 7 looks like it’s almost there. Jacks to open, Root at 3, Buttler at 5/6 and Livingstone back in the mix for the all rounder/finisher slot.

Jacks will be competing with Duckett for that opening spot. If Stokes decides to play as well, it could be a dangerous team. They could let Salt keep to free up a place if needed for Stokes.

Duckett should be a cert for this team, one of the few that plays pace and spin well and is left handed which is great for opening dynamics. Salt doesn’t seem suited ODIs. Stokes needs to just play test cricket, it’s better long term if Brook and Smith get long runs in those middle order slots learning from Root and Buttler.

Stokes clearly needs to think about his body but I would be surprised now he has said he would play if McCullum wanted him do that he doesn’t take that chance.
