English cricket thread

I think Jimmy plays a bit part role in India for a few tests holding an end up then finishes off taking a few against weaker opposition next summer.

Broad retiring may help Jimmy tbh, it creates a space for another bowler with some additional pace. The Broad and Anderson duo were starting to come under criticism for being too stale with both at 78-80 mph so. Although that is reliant on one of the bowlers on the periphery of the team actually manage to remain injury free. Its noteworthy that Wood and Woakes are both in their mid 30s too. The seam attack will be completely different in 2-3 years time.

All fair points!

I think we are well stocked in the batting, the bowling is wide open. But this creates opportunities for people to jump out.

Wow, an absolute legend. Produced some truly legendary spells. Would be fitting if he could produce one more tomorrow at the Oval against Australia just like his first big destructive spell.

Shame his batting went array after he got a nasty one against India. Before that he was threatening to become a genuine all rounder.

Will be sorely missed but I think the time is right. Hopefully going out on something of a high, leaving time for younger players to come and bed in to the side before the next ashes series.

Really hope they both walk out to bat tomorrow. One boundary would be class.

I don’t think that Broad would want them to declare here. He should come in to bat & get a big ovation. Then just come & slog. Every run matters here

My first full cricketing summer. I imagine something pretty similar tomorrow morning.

Broad is one of the greats. Some bowlers are really talented and have certain things dragging their average up — eg Broad in Asia — but I don’t think it’s a slight on them. Fast bowling was meant to be done on the faster pitches of England, Australia, SA.. and spin in the Asian pitches. Far too often excess criticism is levelled for away records. In a way I think away criticism is justified for teams, but not for players. Only a elite minority transcend pitches but likes of Broad, Jadeja who do it more on favourable pitches at the level they operate at is still ‘great’ category for me, especially given longevity.

I sometimes see people commenting on the 6 sixes event which is a trivial footnote of his career, it is nothing more than a pub quiz question imo.

He will be remembered as a test bowler and a great one.

Conditions look perfect at the Oval today tbh. Don’t think it’s going to do much to for the seamers. Wonder if there’s any chance we see Moeen bowling

No it doesn't because this Aussie batting line up doesn't have it in them to score 300 let alone 400 in this series, their heads are gone and they are stuck in a vortex of negativity with their anti Bazball default setting. Time to bowl Australia out is what England need, they have been the better side over the last three or four tests.

Thought Atherton calling anderson an artist and summung broad up as just a competitor was actually a bit of insult to broad. He's a heck of a lot more than that

Looks like there’s some weather around so hoping clouds come into it later today. It’s an interesting pitch, you can get runs but there’s something in it even with the older ball and Murphy was getting some nice drift with the breeze and natural variation into Starc’s foot holes. Ali to the right handers would be key but if it’s his right groin, I’m not sure he’s going to be able to bowl. The team scores have increased through the test but no one’s got a 100 yet.

Bit worried about this weather. BBC seems to think rain from about lunch, right through to tomorrow morning.

With that in mind, I’m surprised the draw is the least likely scenario with the bookies. Especially with England looking like they’ll go out to bat this morning.

PS - I’m aware it’s only day 4.

Yep, you don’t get 600 wickets just by trying really hard!

Looks like rain after lunch and probably little play. Tomorrow now looks pretty good. But it does mean the Aussies might 'only' need to bat four sessions

Wow Joel Wilson actually got a decision right!

Anderson turning down a single to get off strike...bit of a brain fade there.

Glad it’s ‘only’ 383. Doesn’t make the game lopsided. Australia are still in it. Low chance but still there

They are absolutely still in it. Unusually with a chase in test match cricket, if the bowling side don't bowl the batters out they'll lose. A draw is usually a real strong probability but its off the table here with so much time left.

Makes it a alot more exciting.

Understandably perhaps a load of dross bowled from Broad so far. All on the pads.

London absolutely trash venue for tests. Look at how quiet it is

I don't really subscribe to this - it's 11am at the Cricket, it doesn't need to be boisterous.

I get the occasion, if he gets a wicket or two it'll liven up fine.

Is Mark Wood injured or something? Not bowled a single over yet?
