English cricket thread

Are they making up overs or something? I expected lunch at 1.

Australia still well in control, can’t see England getting through the short stuff they’ll inevitably have to deal with. But there’s a draw on offer if they want it I think.

I’ll never understand why they don’t just start at 10.30 if the forecast is good. So much more reliable than trying to fit it in at the end of the day.
Agreed. Probably to do with not enough notice for match going fans, or to organise extra security

We’ve seen tests start here at 10:30 and finish at around 7:00 this year. They basically don’t get all the overs in out of choice. (Also very handy that the ICC fine teams and make some bank out of not getting the overs in).

Think England have bowled themselves out of steam. Another 90 or so runs and Australia will declare.

I don’t think Australia have that much of batting left. There’s a chance they will be bowled out for another 40-50 runs if England can get through one of these guys.

If England are sensible the draw is a result they should consider. The longer Australia bat and the way England handle the short ball stuff they face will be vital. If England just decide to not play the 20 overs of it they’ll face, the draw is pretty obtainable result for England. You saw with Green and Carey there, England just got tired and then it gets easier to score again. Australia will be the same.

Who am I kidding though, England will go for the win and lose by I don’t know 150 runs.

400 is the number. More than that and it's Aussies psychologically well on top let alone in pure game situation. England will fancy anything less with the obvious caveat of being well capable of collapsing in a hooking frenzied heap.

It's quite weird listening to Rishi sounding like a ordinary (albeit very posh) person in this BBC lunchtime Ashes interview. Get him speaking about cricket and he doesn't sound like a robot.

TMS cleansing the image of Tories again, is it.

I recognise this short ball stuff is a legitimate tactic for a wicket but it’s rubbish to watch.

For sure but also at odds with their self appointment as the entertainers who will save test cricket.
Are you calling for pragmatism or fun? Or just in the mood for a good old moan, regardless?

Me the fan of cricket, fun.

Me wanting to get the best result for the team, pragmatism.

It’s ok to view the game through different lenses and this summer is basically about tying yourself in knots as you try to figure out what Bazball really means. That England are currently showing they can play the situation and it’s not really all about entertainment or saving the game (I know it never was but they said it!) is annoying me greatly after their batting.

It's that both your lenses are whatever the opposite of rose-tinted would be, that I find worthy of note.

22 years of English cricket does mean most things just end up being a moan.

Seriously though, the spell Robinson just had he was just bowling high unhittable balls, just not good cricket as much as it might suit England in the match context, I think I can acknowledge that even though I would probably do the same as England captain

I understand Australia have their own way of batting but they are 330 ahead so this is all a bit strange to me.

I ger your point to be fair. I like Bazball because I watch as a neutral but my team played this brand , I would be equally frustrated more often than not. And even when I say I like Bazball I will still say it has immense flaws.

And no matter how one may enjoy it but declaring at 390-8 was a stupid call. But the series isn't over and I feel the media should wait till the series is decided.

A lot of the analysis has over indexed in both directions. Too critical or too protective. England’s style clearly works for them, there’s a lot of evidence for that, they just need to tweak a few things and get some more point of difference bowlers for it to be consistently good. It’s vital England learn from the difficult periods though.

I listened to it while driving. Aggers is good at making his guests at ease in these interviews which helps. He has said he tried to reach out to Jeremy Corbyn for an interview when he was at a game but the offer was never taken up which I think was a mistake. As far as radio interviews go that's probably the best and longest format to make yourself come across relatable to a wide audience.

Geez how many overs england has bowled these two games, next is only with a 3 day break. Gonna catch up with older Broad and Anderson.
