Not sure you can nudge a ball that’s up at head height.

In fairness it was leg side and shoulder height for Duckett’s wicket. Looking back you can forgive Pope and Duckett for playing shots when they were in, but I’d have expected to Root to do what Stokes had to come in and do.

Yeah I’ve gotta admit, I thought the ball hitting the floor definitely aided the catch. He didn’t have any fingers wrapped underneath like the one in the world test final which I thought was a good catch. The ball seemed to jump up a little bit in his hands when it hit the floor.

I was too annoyed at Root to even care that much at the time

Always going to be a line not to cross when you are against the best test team in the world.
I think we’ll find it over the course of this series and I think we’ll win this test match from here.
Try to bat through as much as we can of day 3 even if only at 3-4 runs an over.
Will be disappointed if we are behind after one innings each

Great piece in the Guardian today about Steven Smith and how this might be his last test match at Lords. He might be on the other team but IMLTHO there's nothing wrong in acknowledging greatness.

Best Test batsman I've ever seen in my 50+ years of watching cricket.

Who's second?

Agree on Root, he never looked comfortable from the start though, so not sure what went on with him.

Had to be Smith too with that dodgy Root catch. Don't think you can blame him here but how the video review didn't overrule it is beyond me, there was way too much doubt in that catch and unless he has extra fingers there was no way he had anything under the ball.

If you wanted any more comparisons to 2005, was this the Glenn McGrath moment?

From Cricinfo^.

Lyon's injury will have a big impact on this game, but in Murphy they have a superb backup -- good enough to make his absence not felt IMO

This series is so crazy, can’t believe that I wake up every morning looking forward to the day’s play so much.

Definitely. I feel like even neutrals must be wanting an England win in this test to keep the series alive.

It’s such a shame most kids can’t watch it in the UK.

With them losing Lyon I'd consider us favourites for this test now. No dangerous spinner + one less extra batsman... it's really in our hands.

Expect us to be all out for under 350 then.

It should be a listed event - Cricket doesn't have a single listed event, yet the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final is listed? Work that one out...

At the very least they should make one day of every test free to air.

You can guarantee it would rain. We’d end up with highlights of a rare England’s Ashes test win from the 90s.

I think it's fairly clear cut that if England can bat past Australia today they'll win the test match.

Could still give up a 50+ lead if Stokes goes early.

I know Starc has his uses against the tailenders in test but his test bowling has depreciated so much. Boland right now is a better red ball bowler than him IMO.

Starc at dry and slow Edgbaston would have made more sense with it reversing. This looks more of a Boland wicket.

Like you say though, if he blasts out the England tail today he'll have repaid some of the faith.

I think Stokes realized yesterday that this is England’s test to lose, so he has hunkered down and played sensibly. I expect this to continue today, and England can definitely bat Aussies out of this test.

Yeah first hour is crucial. But it’s genuinely been like that all series so far, it’s great.

My weather app says light cloud cover this morning with much heavier clouds in the afternoon

At least he wasn’t playing a stupid shot, second ball of the day it happens sometimes

England need Brook and Bairstow to deliver here. One more wicket and they'll get through the tail fairly quickly I imagine.

That’s ultimately the problem with losing all those wickets yesterday and a long tail. We’ve never been ahead of the game since Pope went.
