Brook will need a minor miracle to not get out tonight the way he's looking to play

The most annoying way for batsmen to get out, for me. I'd rather watch them all fall reverse scooping than taking on the short ball with the trap set.

You’d have thought Joe Root of all people would have twigged this, he’s even more aggressive in tests now than ODI’s.
Especially when you see what Stokes is doing. He definitely isn’t telling players to go out there and just take it on. He’s trusting them to do what they feel is right.

I think this is my main concern with Bazball, they’ll never ask anyone to stop being stupid and put shots away for a bit, everyone’s backed to the hilt but sometimes you need to save people from themselves.

That's exactly it - we could easily have sent a message out at the drinks break to say chill out you nutters but we never will under this regime.

Seeing Stokes 8 from 18 is a good sign for him. I like it when he tries to build his innings.

I suppose when you’re changing a culture there’s going to be some bumpy periods, question is will England learn from them or just let everyone crack on.

Absolutely and you’ll know from my previous posts that I’m all for what Stokes is doing, for example I thought the declaration was good, but leadership should be adapted for the situation.

Tell Brook to get through the period and now we’ve got Head in the attack who he can go after.

Yep, Brook is young and learning to be fair. Root, Stokes and Bairstow need to lead the way.

Especially when for some of these players it isn't their natural game. I think "Bazball" gives a great lease of life to people like Bairstow who are big shot players and struggle to rein it in, but players like Root and Brook are more about ticking over the strike. The former (this innings aside) is skilled enough to adjust his game and he can get away with some outrageous shots, but I hope we don't hamper Brook's talent if he feels he has to smash everything rather than playing his natural game.

Cracking day - England right back in it, could have been better without 45 mins of madness but with Lyon out and these two putting on 50 there's plenty to be optimistic about.

Also worth noting the Aussies self capitulated to Root last night and failed to salvage anything this morning, so it's not just England playing some amatuer Cricket in short bursts.

We've blown it a bit but we're competing with them again. People keep trying to tell us this series is a mis-match, based on their desire for it to be, and it has not been so far.

I was really tempted to quote tweet a bunch of posts from 3-5pm yesterday but I decided to not be that poster.

England are back in the match but 138 is still a long way off, especially with the lack of a decent number 8 and with Broad, Anderson, and Tongue being genuine tailenders.

You have to have a bit of common sense sometimes. Lords has very long boundaries straight and square and it's hard to sixes.

England are really competitive even with noticeable holes in the team build up, really hope they can learn from some of these passages and hone their style further. If they do, they can be dominant.

Its in the balance again, I will say one thing looking ahead. England will fancy chasing especially with Lyon looking likeley to be out of the match.

Little brain-dead from England to keep going after the short ball, Bazball does occasionally have an ego issue when the ego gets in the way of smart cricket. And this was definetley one of those times. But nice recovery from brook and stokes puts it's right back in the balance.

First hour tomorrow is important as ever.

Duckett reckons the pitch will get flatter so England reckon getting level with the Aussies is a decent effort as we'll fancy chasing anything up to 350 ala last summer.

If England have a good morning session tomorrow, they could pull away fairly quickly. I don't think Cummins has got his field right, in this test or the last one and they're undoubtedly hampered with the loss of Lyon which will be massive.

Both England and Australia have lost their front line spinner for the series, it could be the battle of the stand ins that swings it.

Murphy looks like a brilliant replacement unfortunately.

Great day from England from where we were. I really worried we’d just melt away today but we’ve shown good character to get back in it. We just need to try and be a bit more ruthless and really get on top in these periods of dominance we have rather than letting things ebb and flow so much.
