English cricket thread

Moeen's problem with the ball is that he's utterly one-dimensional. He's a good spinner and bowls some ripping balls at times, but he's utterly incapable of bowling a consistent line and length or building pressure. He will retire with the highest bowling average and economy of the top 20 leading wicket takers for England. This is in spite the fact that he has a better SR than Laker.

What remains to be seen is if this is a patch of form that can be worked through (he was dropped before the India series too, if I remember correctly) or an indication that teams have worked him out. I remember a lot of teams losing wickets against Mooen because they wanted to dominate him and grind him into the ground, but what has struck me about this test is the Aussies working out you don't need to force it; you simply have to sit in against his good balls and hit the one ball every over where he loses his line to the fence.

Indeed, unfortunately I think Rashid has the same issue. Do we send for Mason Crane? We can't go on with this pale imitation of Moeen with Denly and Root chipping in.

Roy just isn't a test batsman. Certainly not an opening batsman.

5 wickets at an average of 107.8 this season...

Ha that's a no then. I think we need to try something different but maybe I'm getting desperate.

Speaking of desperate poor poor decision from Roy. He wants to get on top of the spinner which I can understand but he's given his wicket away there.

Shocking under circumstances. Don't have the mentality to bat in test.

God no. Was never ready when he was picked for the Ashes and has spent most of the summer getting absolutely smashed around the country. In all honesty, baring massive improvement Crane is going to be one of those joke quiz question answers about bowlers that have inexplicably played for England like Borthwick, Kerrigan, and Darren Pattinson.

The intent was fine. He looked like he was going to get out every ball last night, so he had to come up with a plan. Hitting Lyon off his length was definitely the best option.

But when he realised he wasn't going to get there he should have blocked or changed his shot. Going through with the slog was stupid.

What's your aversion to Leach?

I'm not able to watch it, but from the way he was scoring, it looked like Roy was playing a nice patient innings, exactly what we need.

Then he decides to gallop down the pitch at something? Why? We are never going to get the runs, what you need to do is stay in, block for the next 5 hours and hit the occasional loose ball. The fact that Root is there with him, he should have been telling him to bide his time, play safe and not to get excited.

Indeed. I hate to go all Boycott, but one day cricket has ruined a lot of test batsmen.

Roy's never been a test batsman though has he. We took him from ODI cricket in the hope that he could become a test player over time.

People will give him stick for that shot, and yes it was rubbish, but we brought him into the team to win matches, not save them.

Tbf, even before that a run rate of 4.7 off the last 10 hardly screams survival. Modern batsmen want to keep the scoreboard ticking over even in situations like these. Not really sure there's a rational reason for it, just a reflection of the emphasis on trying to score

Howler number 16?

Nope good decision umpire.

Denly is the new Vince.

Roy, Denly, Bairstow, Ali ... England have so many issues in batting line up.

Because the best way to stay in the game these days is to keep scoring runs. You do it sensibly of course but the longer you are out keeping the scoreboard ticking over the more comfortable you feel out there. The more the fielding side have to rethink their tactics. Just trying to defend all day will benefit the bowlers because once you're stuck in a rut giving up maidens these batsmen can't help but play a release shot which inevitably gifts a wicket.

It wasn't just the shot he got out on but overall attacking mentality under circumstances but to be fair to him he's a attacking player, so its hard to change that quickly but I've seen Sehwag defend for hours multiple times in a less batting friendly era and he only knew one way to play.

Another one gone, boring defensive batting is required here.

I think it's just about changing your mindset and taking grim satisfaction from dead batting the ball and playing out maidens rather than seeing it as 'getting stuck in a rut'. I don't think I've ever seen a test side play 'properly' and save a test on the last day and most of the success stories are, grim, determined, efforts.

I appreciate that's easier said than done for a player like Roy, but he played that daft fecking hack whilst the runs were flowing so the other approach is not really a guarantee that these batsmen won't play stupid shots either.

Root gone. 85-4.

Game over unless rain comes to England’s undeserved rescue.

None at all forecast.
