English cricket thread

Only themselves to blame for Australia if they don't win. They've gone on far longer than seems necessary.

Expect them to get the win but certainly not ruling out the draw.

Not aggressive enough captaining at all. I don't think 90 overs is enough to bowl England out if they play for the draw.

Australia winning the first test will probably result in the most interesting series

Not sure, I would have backed Australia to win at Headingly where the pitch is faster and at Lords where Australia have generally done well in. Could easily end up being the 4-0 to Aus which some rando on TMS predicted.

Make no mistake, Australia winning at Edgbaston is a big deal. Australia haven’t beaten England there since 2001 in any type of cricket match.

Moeen has been absolutely fecking horrible.

On an incredibly helpful pitch for spin bowling too.

It would be negligent and cruel to Moeen to pick him for the rest of the series. He was dropped from the ODI side during the World Cup for a reason.

He's struggling hugely at every aspect of the game in every format of the game.
What is sad is that when he first got into the England team he considered himself a batsman who bowled a little. His bowling has been mediocre but his batting has been atrocious.

Interesting stat after yesterday from the BBC

"(Steve) Smith now has more Test runs in the last 16 months than Moeen Ali, and he spent 15.9 of them banned."

It's very sad because I'm a big Moeen fan and when he's confident he's a very valuable player.

But it'd be unfair to Moeen to keep picking him. He looks like he's mentally shot, being bowled not offering a shot and bowling 8ft high beamers show that.

Jack Leach will offer more control at the very least and he'd struggle to be worse than Moeen with the bat. I think it's an easy decision

I’d make three changes for the next test:
- Leach for Moeen
- Archer for Anderson (injury)
- Whichever batsman is in form for Bairstow, and give Buttler the gloves

The bolded statement just epitomizes why Moeen has got to go. Leach's bowling has surely got to be at least as good and since the turn of the year Moeen has amassed a grand total of 86 runs in five tests with 4 ducks.

Forecast currently suggests that any rain at all is highly unlikely and towards the end of the day the sun should be out, so we shouldn't be needing any light meters.

Well Moeen had the highest amount of test wickets in the world for the last 12 months so that's why he was in the side for this test. I completely agree with @Djemba-Djemba though, while Moeen has a great attitude he has been in awful form this pretty much the entire summer and being out of the team will do him more good.

Moeen's problem with the ball is that he's utterly one-dimensional. He's a good spinner and bowls some ripping balls at times, but he's utterly incapable of bowling a consistent line and length or building pressure. He will retire with the highest bowling average and economy of the top 20 leading wicket takers for England. This is in spite the fact that he has a better SR than Laker.

What remains to be seen is if this is a patch of form that can be worked through (he was dropped before the India series too, if I remember correctly) or an indication that teams have worked him out. I remember a lot of teams losing wickets against Mooen because they wanted to dominate him and grind him into the ground, but what has struck me about this test is the Aussies working out you don't need to force it; you simply have to sit in against his good balls and hit the one ball every over where he loses his line to the fence.

The only players in this England test side who are truly up to the job are Root, Stokes and Broad. Anderson is one of the all time greats obviously, but he's basically done.

Yeah agree with this, they've realised attacking Moeen plays right into him and you're best off sitting back and milking him. I'm not wholly convinced by Leach as a bowler but at the very least the Aussies will try and go after him and he could have the opportunity there.

I think Moeen's been worked out before and he has been around for a while. My thinking behind him is that he has come up the system as a batsman and his confidence is so tied to that the fact that he has become a walking wicket makes him feel the pressure more with his bowling. He's very much a fragile character.

No idea if after being dropped that this could be Moeen's last Test match. I would probably expect to see him back for the SL tour at the very least as there aren't any other spinners you could call upon now.

:lol::lol: If this clown gets another Test match, people need to be sacked.

That is a horrible umpiring decision. No justification.

9 decisions overturned (7 for Joel Wilson) and there's been a couple that should have been reviewed that weren't as well. Ridiculous.

At what point do we just scrap umpires and speed up DRS so it's basically instantaneous and automated on every ball?

They should do it for no balls and wides anyway.

Then at least the field umpires can give their full attention to the batsman.

Bit surprised they've still not gone to Lyon.

Wouldn't give Siddle too many here. I'd want him fresh enough to bowl a long spell this afternoon if things don't go to plan for Australia.

Don't want to keep doing this but......:lol:

Now watch him not give a plum lbw.

You only need to hide your bat behind the pad and it'll count as shot offered.

Strange.
