Brilliant bowling by lyon. Just keep it simple and you will he rewarded. I also applaud Australian board for persisting with lyon even when his form was down. That's how you treat your primary bowlers and not drop them the moment they have one or two bad series.

Not surprised one bit by the batting performance, I expected that in both innings actually. England needs to prepare seaming wickets as that is the only chance

What is the actual point of putting Anderson out there?

He made his injury worse batting in the first innings.

This is stupidity.

Are england expecting rain soon?! Why risk Anderson getting further injured?

He's done for a while I imagine. They're not trying to get him fit for the next test.

You'd think a middle order of Stokes,Bairstow and Buttler would have the skill to negotiate the Aussie bowling but they have been shit!

As for Moeen, he's done

So many issues in this side. Not easy to win matches when you lack a couple of opening batsmen, a spinner, and a wicketkeeper.

Shocking defeat at a place we rarely lose.

Lords next where we always lose.

Not looking good.

Jimmy and Moeen certain to be replaced. Denly and Bairstow should go too but they'll probably survive for at least another test.

Depressing.

You mean Smith. His first innings knock was the match winner.

Yeah both innings, also others contributed too isn't it, especially in second innings.

His first innings for sure changed the game.

Well that was an extremely embarrassing end for England. The silence in the crowd was great to (not) hear after the first few days of grief.

This makes the series damn interesting now.

Will there be more wickets that deteriorate like that one for Lyon to capitalize on? And will Smith keep up this great form? Essentially we need both to continue to be a chance for the series and I just don't see that happening. England will bounce right back.

8/122 to winning by 251 runs.

Possibly Smiths best performance and possibly the best Aussie batting perfomance since Clarke in south africa 5 years ago

Someone get on the phone to Cook and get him out of retirement.

Well beaten in the end. Jimmy going down has killed us off.
Selectors fault. They knew he wasn't 100% gong into this game. The one thing you have to be before a test series is 100% match fit.

fecking useless bunch from top to bottom. Got as lucky as feck in the WC and approached the Ashes with the same white ball mentality.

Smith's innings in India on a ridiculously spinning pitch was also there. I think it was in Pune.

Fantastic turnaround from the Aussies. Smith with one of the best Test knocks in recent memory, brilliant.

Having Jimmy only able to bowl 4 overs the entire match was just a monster blow.

Even if he's not taking wickets, he's relentless and disciplined and he'd have held an end up.

Smith being incredible and Moeen utterly failing with the ball on a pitch tailor made for him cost us the match.

Was it his calf?

They're the 'old man' injuries.

bairstow should be dropped, he's in poor form and an average keeper. England can either bring in a batsman, move buttler to wicket keeper or bring in a wicket keeper.

That was also a brilliant knock.

England will need massive changes for the next test, Anderson for Archer, Ali for the next spinner and Bairstow and Roy look like they will be on the chopping block

He's also about to retire, we have to get used to life without Jimmy.

Think it's more not having that additional bowler to make up for the weak middle order which made things difficult for England. Wouldn't have made any difference to the result though given how Smith played.

We were under pressure when Jimmy pulled up but we were doing ok until the Aussies managed to change the ball in the England first innings and put the brakes on. They won, we lost. Barstow and Ali need a rest to regain form.

His record when scoring centuries is impressive. Australia hardly lose when he scores a 100
