English cricket thread

Since the fall of Australia's 8th wicket there's been something like 850 runs scored for the loss of 17 wickets.

If this England team is capable of batting out draws, this is the pitch to do it.

Can't see them making more than two changes for the next test because it looks like panic. Archer is certain to come in for Anderson and it's hard to see how Moeen can keep his place ahead of Leach, so the rest will keep their place.

Long-term there'll be more changes though. Bairstow isn't worth his place if he isn't scoring runs and Sibley will probably be given a go if Denly doesn't make a score.

I'd also replace Root with Buttler as captain but that won't happen until the end of the series at the earliest.

I cannot see that happening even if they lose the series. Buttler's place in the test team isn't exactly secure, he needs to score some more runs.

Can't see them dropping him tbh. He seems quite senior now.

Draw can happen. Cummins is great in this situation where it's attritional, though. Always extracts something.

Bairstow in this match = Shit batting, shit wicket keeping and being useless with reviews.

That Moeen wicket makes me worried for England's innings. Lyon will land it there every ball.

Am sure Butler will get enough runs this series to justify his place.

Roy, Denly and Bairstow are ahead of Buttler in having to justify their place right now.

We'll probably just collapse to Lyon. If the batsmen applied themselves, they should bat it out but don't have any confidence they will.
What’s Roy and Buttler like against world class test off spin?

I think England could chase 350 if either scored a big ton. More chance of that than batting out 100 overs.

How does it work now ?

Do England have one day to get the runs?

At this point they aren’t going to get the runs so more likely to look at batting the whole day to get the draw. Unlikely unless the rain delivers.

If Lyon pitches in the right places unlike Moeen then it will be tough for England. If they manage to play him well, they have a chance but England usually struggle with big chases and if one falls, they are prone to collapses so I am not confident at all.

The commentators were right when they said Australia may hope they get bowled out as it saves them making a decision when to declare.

I'm in favour of them staying in for a few more hours. Maybe declare lunchtime :wenger:

Moeen has been absolutely fecking horrible.

On an incredibly helpful pitch for spin bowling too.

It would be negligent and cruel to Moeen to pick him for the rest of the series. He was dropped from the ODI side during the World Cup for a reason.

He's struggling hugely at every aspect of the game in every format of the game.

Captains never declare early enough. England aren't chasing this. Declare and give yourself a chance at a wicket tonight

Puzzled by the tactics.

They've ruled a loss out - what're they batting for?

Only predicted to be raining until about 10am tomorrow, so should get pretty much a full batting day in.

They should have declared when they got to about 350 ahead

Only themselves to blame for Australia if they don't win. They've gone on far longer than seems necessary.

Expect them to get the win but certainly not ruling out the draw.

As others have said England won't make loads of changes because it isn't a good luck.

Jimmy will obviously be out for the rest of the series and Archer if fit will come in. If he isn't it'll be Stone.

I also think Leach has to come in for Moeen.

Denly and Bairstow will keep their places I imagine even though I'd drop both.

Yeah you have to wonder whether this is a hangover from the World Cup. Looks completely gone at the moment.

Yep. They may both be replaced by the end of the series but the management will be wary of making all the changes at once. And if you think back to the bad old days of the 1990s that's fair enough.

Let's hope all the under-pressure players perform tomorrow.

Shows how much England miss James Anderson. Even if he is not taking wickets he is much more accurate and difficult to score off.
He is 37 now so won't be around much longer.

The likelihood of batting out a full day's play in the fourth innings of a Test Match without an Atherton or Cook in the side approaches zero.

Not happened with England since 2013 in New Zealand apparently.

Prior batted for about 5 hours, hit a century and we escaped with a draw.

Can't see it happening tomorrow. If Burns can somehow play and miss another 50 times like in the first innings then maybe.

Australia winning the first test will probably result in the most interesting series
